Background And Purpose: Patients actively smoking at the time of primary hip or knee arthroplasty are at increased risk of direct perioperative complications. We investigated the association between smoking status and risk of revision and mortality within 2 years following hip or knee arthroplasty.
Methods: We used prospectively collected data from the Dutch Arthroplasty Register.
Two Jack-Russell Terrier × Chihuahua mixed-breed littermates with Leigh syndrome were investigated. The dogs presented with progressive ataxia, dystonia, and increased lactate levels. Brain MRI showed characteristic bilateral symmetrical T2 hyperintense lesions, histologically representing encephalomalacia.

Objectives: Tick-borne encephalitis virus and louping ill virus are neurotropic flaviviruses transmitted by ticks. Epidemiologically, tick-borne encephalitis is endemic in Europe whereas louping ill's predominant geographical distribution is the UK. Rarely, these flaviviruses affect dogs causing neurological signs.

The nucleoside analogues remdesivir and GS-441524 can be effective in its treatment, but most studies have used unregulated products of unknown composition. The aim of the present study was to describe the treatment of FIP using legally sourced veterinary-prescribed regulated veterinary compounded products containing known amounts of remdesivir (injectable) or GS-441524 (oral tablets).

MR imaging showed a large irregular pseudomass in the central region of the cranial cavity, compatible with a malformation of cortical development. Despite the extensive changes, the patient was neurologically normal interictally 1 year following diagnosis.

We aimed to investigate the test-retest reliability of the ROVEMP and the effect of amplitude and age.
Methods: We performed the ROVEMP test twice in 19 patients with myasthenia gravis (52.
A 3-year-old, male neutered Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (CKCS) presented with complex focal seizures and prolonged lethargy. The aim of the study was to investigate the clinical signs, metabolic changes and underlying genetic defect. Blood and urine organic acid analysis revealed increased medium-chain fatty acids and together with the clinical findings suggested a diagnosis of medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency.

Additionally, accuracy of screw placement between a novice and an experienced surgeon was determined.
Study Design: Preoperative computed tomography images from 20 lumbosacral cadaveric specimens were used to design a novel unilateral 3D-PSG for the L7 and sacral vertebrae which was printed in acryl-nitrile butadiene styrene plastic.
The unpredictable nature of seizures is challenging for caregivers of epileptic dogs, which calls the need for other management strategies such as seizure detection devices. Seizure detection devices are systems that rely on non-electroencephalographic (non-EEG) ictal changes, designed to detect seizures. The aim for its use in dogs would be to provide owners with a more complete history of their dog's seizures and to help install prompt (and potentially life-saving) intervention.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAccurate knowledge of seizure frequency is key to optimising treatment. New methods for detecting epileptic seizures are currently investigated in humans, which rely on changes in biomarkers, also called seizure detection devices. Critical to device development, is understanding user needs and requirements.

The reported results of this treatment show large variability between studies, ranging between 0 - 40 percent failure. The purposes of this study were to determine long term (1) reinfection rate, (2) re-revision rates for any reason, and (3) the reinfection rate of patients with positive cultures at reimplantation.

A search was conducted using the Pubmed, Medline and Web of Science databases. Barometric pressure, temperature and humidity are the weather conditions that are found to be correlated most to the worsening of pain complaints.

Background: The increasing prevalence of obesity has resulted in an increased number of revision total hip arthroplasties (rTHAs) performed in patients with a high body mass index (BMI). The aim of this study is to evaluate whether obesity negatively affects (1) complication rate, (2) reoperation and revision rate, and (3) patient-reported outcome in rTHA.
Methods: In this registry-based study, we prospectively followed 444 rTHAs (cup: n = 265, stem: n = 57, both: n = 122) performed in a specialized high-volume orthopedic center between 2013 and 2015.
Objectives: Vitamin deficiencies may reflect less-than-optimal health in select populations. The aim of this study was to determine whether vitamin D supplementation (VDs) after malnutrition may be adversely related to cancer diagnoses in a selected group of patients with alcoholic Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS).
Method: This was a retrospective cohort study of all patients admitted to Slingedael Korsakoff Center, from 1996 to 2018.
Tryptophan (Trp) oxidation in proteins leads to a number of events, including changes in color, higher order structure (HOS), and biological activity. We describe here a number of new findings through a comprehensive characterization of 6 monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) following selective oxidation of Trp residues by 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride. Fluorescence spectroscopy, in combination with second derivative analysis, demonstrates that the loss of Trp fluorescence intensity is a sensitive indicator of Trp oxidation in mAbs.

Protein HOS characterization is performed during comparability assessments for product consistency as well as during forced degradation studies for structural alteration upon stress. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy is a widely used technique for measuring protein HOS, but it remains difficult to assess HOS with a high degree of accuracy and precision.

Sequence variants of a monoclonal antibody resulting from incomplete processing of signal peptide were identified and characterized using multiple mass spectrometry platforms and reverse phase chromatography. Detection and quantification of these variants by three LC/MS platforms were assessed. Quantification was also performed by mass spectrometric analysis of the subunits of the antibody generated by reduction and IdeS proteolysis.

Investigation of discoloration in protein therapeutics for comparability is particularly challenging primarily for two reasons. First, the description of color or discoloration is to certain extent a subjective characteristic rather than a quantitative attribute.

In the Netherlands malformations in new-born ruminants were made notifiable from the 20th of December 2011. After a notification, malformed new-borns were necropsied and brain tissue was sampled for reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).
