Usually, we do not question that we possess a body and act upon the world. This pre-reflective awareness of being a bodily and agentive self can, however, be disrupted by different clinical conditions. Whereas sense of ownership (SoO) describes the feeling of mineness toward one's own body parts, feelings or thoughts, sense of agency (SoA) refers to the experience of initiating and controlling an action.

Aminoglycoside block of P2X2 receptors heterologously expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes.

Aminoglycosides are polycationic antibiotics that have been shown to block a variety of cation channels. The inhibitory effect of externally applied aminoglycosides on P2X2 receptor currents was examined after heterologous expression in Xenopus laevis oocytes using the two-electrode voltage-clamp technique. All of the aminoglycosides tested inhibited the ATP-evoked responses with potencies ranging from 71 μM to 2 mM (IC(50) values).

Evaluation of parameters critical for observing nucleic acids inside living Xenopus laevis oocytes by in-cell NMR spectroscopy.

In-cell NMR spectroscopy of proteins in different cellular environments is a well-established technique that, however, has not been applied to nucleic acids so far. Here, we show that isotopically labeled DNA and RNA can be observed inside the eukaryotic environment of Xenopus laevis oocytes by in-cell NMR spectroscopy. One limiting factor for the observation of nucleic acids in Xenopus oocytes is their reduced stability.

Two asymmetric contoured plate-rods for occipito-cervical fusion.

The author presents a retrospective clinical study addressing the outcome after posterior stabilisation of the occipital-cervical spine using a new cranio-spinal implant. The range of surgical methods for operative treatment of occipito-cervical instability remains wide, and it is still a demanding technique that frequently requires improvisation by the surgeon. No previous studies have been published of occipito-cervical reconstructions using two contoured asymmetrical occipital plates interdigitating in the midline at the occiput and allowing various methods of cervical fixation, by means of different hooks, a claw device or screws.

Outcome of cervical spine surgery in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Objectives: Cervical spine instability in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) may lead to cervical myelopathy or occipital neuralgia, or both. Morbidity and mortality in patients with RA treated with cervical spine surgery during two years of follow up were evaluated.

Methods: Between 1992 and 1996 55 patients with RA underwent cervical spine surgery because of occipital neuralgia or cervical myelopathy, or both.

Sleep apnoea caused by rheumatoid arthritis.

Sleep apnoea syndrome (SAS) is a rarely documented, but possibly lethal, complication of the instability of the cervical spine in rheumatoid arthritis. Five patients with SAS of a central or peripheral origin are presented, and the problems of recognizing and diagnosing the syndrome are discussed. We hope that clinicians will become more aware of the existence and the different aetiologies of SAS, thus improving early recognition and appropriate treatment.

Spinal extradural lipomas. Report of two cases.

Two patients with intraspinal extradural lipomas without associated spina bifida are presented. This type of lipoma is benign and uncommon. A summary of the relevant literature is given.

[Therapy and prognosis of the medulloblastoma: progress through late irradiation techniques (author's transl)].

Thirty patients with histologically established medulloblastoma were postoperatively irradiated at the radiological center in Essen. The patients were divided into two groups. Treatment was nonuniform in the first group consisting of 12 patients irradiated between 1969 and 1973.

Electroencephalographic (EEG) investigations in medulloblastomas.

Electroencephalographic investigations were done in 24 patients suffering from medulloblastoma. All underwent subtotal or total removal of the tumour and a shunt procedure, foowed by irradiation therapy. The most frequent pre-operative finding was general slowing, the degree of which could be correlated to the amount of papilloedema and obstructive hydrocepalus.

Optimal therapy in medulloblastoma.

Twenty-eight children with medulloblastoma (19 boys and 9 girls) were treated at the Departments of Neurosurgery and Radiotherapy in Essen between 1969 and 1977, and were followed prospectively after surgical treatment and postoperative irradiation. Because different radiation techniques had been used, these patients were divided into two groups, one given a limited irradiation volume and the other irradiation of the entire central nervous system. The results obtained in the former group were inferior to those in the latter.

Computerized tomography (CT), electroencephalography (EEG), and clinical symptoms in severe cranio-cerebral injuries: A comparative study.

In the first six months of 1977 156 patients with craniocerebral injuries underwent computerized tomography. Twelve had severe deficits which led to neurosurgical interventions. Only five had space-occupying haematomas.

Successful operative treatment of an aneurysm on a left persistent hypoglossal artery.

The authors report on a case of a saccular aneurysm on a primitive hypoglossal artery in a patient who sustained a subarachnoid haemorrhage. The conditions of diagnosing a primitive hypoglossal artery and principles of development are briefly discussed. The first successful direct operative treatment of this rare aneurysm is reported.
