Physical macroporous poly(vinyl alcohol)-based cryogels formed by the freeze-thaw technique without the use of any foreign cross-linkers are of significant interests for biomedical applications. In the present study, such gel materials loaded with the antimicrobial substances were prepared and their physicochemical properties were evaluated followed by an assessment of their potential to serve as drug carriers that can be used as implants for the treatment of infected wounds. The present study used optical imaging to investigate the development of the optical signal within orientational columns in primary visual cortex of cats reared under conditions of rhythmic light stimulation. Results showed that, although inter-columnar spacing was unchanged, a 3-5-fold decrement in optical signal from orientation columns and a drastic decline in contrast sensitivity was observed in both areas 18 and 17. These data suggest the modification of cortical columnar functioning under artificially correlated synchronization of retinal input.

Hypoglycemic syndrome occurs not only in endocrine diseases but can complicate the course of many somatic diseases and tumors of pancreatic and extra-pancreatic localization. Development of hypoglycemia in liver tumors is associated with a decrease in the volume of functioning liver tissue, increased consumption, and utilization of glucose by the tumor tissue, inhibition of gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis, and secretion of insulin-like peptides. Hypoglycemia in liver tumors is rarely the first symptom of the disease and usually occurs in patients with large tumor sizes and symptoms of tumor intoxication.

In many cases, it takes several minutes after an earthquake to publish online a seismic location with confidence. Via monitoring for specific types of increased website, app, or Twitter usage, crowdsourced detection of seismic activity can be used to "seed" the search in the seismic data for an earthquake and reduce the risk of false detections, thereby accelerating the publication of locations for felt earthquakes. We demonstrate that this low-cost approach can work at the global scale to produce reliable and rapid results.

Peripheral nerve injury remains a common clinical problem with no satisfactory treatment options. Numerous studies have shown that hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) exerts neurotrophic effect in motor, sensory, and parasympathetic neurons in addition to mitogenic, morphogenic, angiogenic, antiapoptotic, antifibrotic, and anti-inflammatory effect on various tissues and cells. In our study we examined efficacy of gene therapy with HGF-bearing plasmid (pC4W-hHGF) to improve consequences of traumatic nerve injury in mice.

The AlpArray programme is a multinational, European consortium to advance our understanding of orogenesis and its relationship to mantle dynamics, plate reorganizations, surface processes and seismic hazard in the Alps-Apennines-Carpathians-Dinarides orogenic system. The AlpArray Seismic Network has been deployed with contributions from 36 institutions from 11 countries to map physical properties of the lithosphere and asthenosphere in 3D and thus to obtain new, high-resolution geophysical images of structures from the surface down to the base of the mantle transition zone. With over 600 broadband stations operated for 2 years, this seismic experiment is one of the largest simultaneously operated seismological networks in the academic domain, employing hexagonal coverage with station spacing at less than 52 km.

Primary visual cortex contains a set of modules, and their postnatal development depends on a combination of internal genetic and external (defined by visual environment) factors. In order to examine a development of intermodular interactions in visual cortex of kittens subjected to rhythmic light stimulation (15 Hz and 50 Hz frequencies, groups RLS-15 and RLS-50), we investigate an intermodular signal correlation by mean of optical imaging technique. Using optical imaging technique and method for histochemical cytochrome oxidase revealing we investigated in three kitten's groups (two experimental and one control) a rhythmically light stimulation on ontogenetic development of orientation columns and cytochrome oxidase blobs in visual area 18. Experimental animals were stimulated by rhythmical light for 3 hrs or 12 hrs per day respectively. It was first obtained that binocular co-activation per se, not accompanied by strabismus, indeed influences cortical columns formation during critical period.
