Strong-ties and weak-ties rationalities: toward a mental model of the consequences of kinship intensity.

There is growing evidence of the connection between variations in kinship intensity and cross-cultural differences in psychological traits. Contributing to this literature on kinship intensity, we put forward a mental model to explain the enduring connection between ancestral niche and psychological traits. Our model posits that two primary orientations or dispositions-strong-ties and weak-ties rationalities-have co-evolved with our ancestral niches to perpetuate-by internalizing and reproducing-the social structure (such as preferences for certain attitudes, values, and beliefs) of the ancestral niche.

Emergency physicians perspectives of state continuing medical education requirements for medical licensure.

Objectives: This study aims to better understand the perspectives of emergency medicine physicians' on the role that state-mandated, topic-specific continuing medical education (CME) plays in addressing knowledge gaps, its relevance to current emergency practice, its reported burden and costs of CME activities to emergency physicians, and its perceived improvement in patient care.

Methods: A cross-sectional survey was designed by the Coalition of Board-Certified Emergency Physicians (COBCEP) and distributed in February 2023 to all American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM)-certified physicians. Statistical tests of significance (Pearson's chi-square and Fisher's exact test) assessed the cost and time spent on CME as well as the perceived value placed on CME by ABEM-certified physicians to improve patient care.

Deciphering the functional impact of Alzheimer's Disease-associated variants in resting and proinflammatory immune cells.

Genome-wide association studies have identified loci associated with Alzheimer's Disease (AD), but identifying the exact causal variants and genes at each locus is challenging due to linkage disequilibrium and their largely non-coding nature. To address this, we performed a massively parallel reporter assay of 3,576 AD-associated variants in THP-1 macrophages in both resting and proinflammatory states and identified 47 expression-modulating variants (emVars). To understand the endogenous chromatin context of emVars, we built an activity-by-contact model using epigenomic maps of macrophage inflammation and inferred condition-specific enhancer-promoter pairs.

Breathlessness without borders: a call to action for global breathlessness research.

It is likely that the burden of breathlessness in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) is much higher than has been estimated using calculations of disease burden and expected prevalence of the symptom. However, most breathlessness research has been conducted in high-income countries and may not be relevant to LMICs. The authors explore a mental health care model designed to identify mental health needs early among refugee arrivals that may interfere with adjustment and overall health outcomes using data from a Midwest refugee resettlement program. Using ecological models of mental distress and theories on help-seeking behaviors, the authors used logistic and count regressions to predict enrollment in mental health care services and utilization rates.

Type I melanoma antigen (MAGE) family members are detected in numerous tumor types, and expression is correlated with poor prognosis, high tumor grade, and increased metastasis. Type I MAGE proteins are typically restricted to reproductive tissues, but expression can recur during tumorigenesis. Several biochemical functions have been elucidated for them, and notably, MAGEs regulate proteostasis by serving as substrate recognition modules for E3 ligase complexes.

The contribution of community-based conservation models to conserving large herbivore populations.

In East Africa, community-based conservation models (CBCMs) have been established to support the conservation of wildlife in fragmented landscapes like the Tarangire Ecosystem, Tanzania. To assess how different management approaches maintained large herbivore populations, we conducted line distance surveys and estimated seasonal densities of elephant, giraffe, zebra, and wildebeest in six management units, including three CBCMs, two national parks (positive controls), and one area with little conservation interventions (negative control). Using a Monte-Carlo approach to propagate uncertainties from the density estimates and trend analysis, we analyzed the resulting time series (2011-2019).

Introduction: Suitable sample collection and preparation methods are essential to enable nucleic acid amplification testing at the point of care (POC). Integrating expression quantitative trait loci (eQTL), 3D chromatin structure, and other genomic approaches with OA GWAS data offers a promising approach to elucidate disease mechanisms; however, comprehensive eQTL maps in OA-relevant tissues and conditions remain scarce.

Introduction: Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is an inflammatory rheumatic disorder characterized by pain and stiffness in the shoulder and pelvic girdles, constitutional symptoms, and elevated acute-phase reactants. Glucocorticoids (GCs) remain the first-choice treatment for PMR, but relapses are common. Identification of steroid-sparing agents is therefore of utmost importance.

To explore further the conformational landscape of these cations, and their possible use as mol-ecular switches, the title salts, (CHClN)[CoCl] and (CHClN)[ZnCl], were prepared and structurally characterized.
