Objective: This study compared parental distress in 166 couples, using the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF), in the Italian NASCITA cohort at the two-year well-child visits. The study explored the concordance of distress levels within couples (aim 1) and their correlation with child-related stressors (aim 2).

Background: Previous studies focused on maternal distress or considered maternal and paternal experiences separately, without addressing differences within couples.

Background: Previous research has assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adolescent mental health (MH). How the pandemic changed healthcare resource utilisation for MH conditions was investigated less, however, in particular in Italy.

Methods: Data concerning outpatient visits in child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHSs), access to emergency departments (EDs), hospital admissions and drug prescriptions collected in administrative databases of the Lombardy Region, Italy, concerning adolescents 12-17 years old and occurring in the 2016-2021 period were analysed.

Purpose: Previous studies have analyzed the characteristics and prevalence of sleep disturbances among Italian children. Less attention has been paid, however, to the factors involved in sleep disturbances in the first two years of life. The goals of the present study were, therefore: 1) to provide a developmental trajectory of Italian infants' night awakenings and duration during the first two years of life and 2) to analyze which factors affect night awakenings the most over time.

This study aims to assess how commonly 15 parental practices, known to have positive effects on child and adult health, are carried out by families in Italy, if they are related, and which characteristics are associated with implementation. Children participating in the NASCITA Cohort, a prospective study in which family pediatricians in Italy collect data on children and their families, were included if they had sufficient data. Data on practice implementation, socio-demographic characteristics, and interrelatedness between practices were analyzed.

Background: The early identification of infants with a risk for neurodevelopmental disorders in the first few years of life is essential for better developmental outcomes. Screenings should be carried out by combining the family pediatricians' and parents' perspectives, the two fundamental sources of information on children's health. The present study has three aims: (a) to test the feasibility of parent-report instruments to detect warning signs in their children's development; (b) to ascertain whether there is an agreement between the family pediatricians' (FP) clinical judgments of warning signs and the parental perceptions; (c) to determine whether there is a link between parents' distress and child development.

Background: Supporting young ADHD patients in transition to adult services is essential. Yet, the low percentages of successful referrals and the issues reported by patients and clinicians stress the need for further attention to transitioning practices. The present study assessed the transitioning process of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) patients in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) in the Italian territory.

Article Synopsis
  • Many kids in poorer countries, like Kenya, might have delays in their physical, emotional, and learning skills, leading to developmental problems.
  • The study looked at whether certain screening tests could help identify these problems early in children living in informal settlements in Nairobi.
  • Out of 509 kids tested, about 8.6% were found to be at risk, and factors like low birth weight and the mother's age seemed to influence the results.

Background: The aim of this study is to compare the 2021-2022 bronchiolitis season to the four previous years (2017-2018, 2018-2019, 2019-2020, 2020-2021) to see if there was an anticipation of the peak, an overall increase of cases, and an increased need of intensive care.

Methods: A retrospective single-centre study in the San Gerardo Hospital Fondazione MBBM, Monza, Italy was performed. Emergency Departments (ED) visits of patients aged < 18 years and ≤ 12 months were analyzed: the incidence of bronchiolitis on total assessments, the urgency level at triage and the hospitalization rate were compared.

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of overweight at 12 months in an Italian birth cohort and to identify factors related to an increased likelihood of being overweight.

Methods: The Italian NASCITA birth cohort was analysed. Infants were classified as underweight (<5th), normal weight (5-84th) and overweight (≥85th centile) at 12 months of age according to the WHO percentiles of body mass index (BMI) and the prevalence of overweight was estimated.

Background: Knowing the research issues addressed by other cohorts when setting up new cohorts allows researchers to avoid unnecessary duplication of efforts, while permitting collaborations, including data merging data, to better tackle knowledge gaps. This study describes the topics addressed by European birth cohorts, the interaction between these cohort interests and aims, and describes the scientific publications deriving from the cohorts.

Methods: A previous study found 66 pregnancy and 45 birth cohorts in Europe.

Article Synopsis
  • - Rett syndrome (RTT) is a genetic disorder caused by mutations in the MECP2 gene, leading to cognitive and neural impairments; finding alternative therapies is crucial as gene therapy has potential side effects.
  • - Research showed that the c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) pathway is activated in RTT models, and using the JNK inhibitor D-JNKI1 significantly improved symptoms like body weight recovery and locomotion abilities in mice.
  • - Treatment with D-JNKI1 also reduced severe breathing issues and prevented neuronal death in lab-created neurons from patients with MECP2 mutations, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic approach for RTT.
