Obstetric racism, a debate under construction in Brazil: perceptions of black women on obstetric violence.

This article aims to know the perception of women on obstetric violence from a racial perspective. This was a qualitative study carried out in a public maternity hospital with 25 women in the city of Salvador, Bahia, Brazil. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and participant observation from November 2021 to February 2022.

Cross-cultural adaptation of the CALCULATE instrument into Brazilian Portuguese: pressure injury in intensive care.

Objective: To perform the cross-cultural adaptation of CALCULATE for Brazilian Portuguese.

Method: A methodological study conducted from January to December 2021, divided into six stages: translation, synthesis, back-translation, expert committee with the application of the content validity index, pre-testing in 40 adult patients, and submission to the authors. The study took place in the intensive care units of a public tertiary teaching hospital in the interior of the state of São Paulo, Brazil.

Non-invasive neuromodulation in reducing the risk of falls and fear of falling in community-dwelling older adults: systematic review.

Introduction: Neuromodulation is a non-invasive technique that allows for the modulation of cortical excitability and can produce changes in neuronal plasticity. Its application has recently been associated with the improvement of the motor pattern in older adults individuals with sequelae from neurological conditions.

Objective: To highlight the effects of non-invasive neuromodulation on the risk of falls and fear of falling in community-dwelling older adults.

Factors associated with happiness among community-dwelling older adults: a systematic review.

Objectives: To identify factors associated with self-reported happiness among community-dwelling older adults.

Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted. Searches were conducted in the PsycInfo, Web of Science, Scopus and Pubmed databases for relevant articles published in English, Spanish or Portuguese using the following search strategy and Boolean operators: (happiness*) AND (elder* OR (old adult*)).

Validity and reliability of portable A-mode ultrasound in measuring body fat percentage: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

The present Systematic Review with Meta-analysis study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Portable A-mode Ultrasound (P-US) for measuring body fat percentage (BF%). Only studies with participants of both genders which had assessed BF% using P-US compared to the reference standard were selected. Publications up until May 31, 2022 were searched in the MEDLINE, COCHRANE, Science Direct, Web of Science, LILACS, SciELO, PEDro, SPORT Discus, CINAHL and SCOPUS databases.

Development and validation of a brief digital cognitive test based on the paradigm of stimulus equivalence in a sample of older adults.

Effects of the Acute and Chronic Administration of Cannabidiol on Cognition in Humans and Animals: A Systematic Review.

The effects of cannabidiol (CBD) on cognition has been investigated in recent years to determine the therapeutic potential of this cannabinoid for a broad gamut of medical conditions, including neuropsychiatric disorders. The aim of the present study was to perform a systematic review of studies that analyzed the effects of the acute and chronic administration of CBD on cognition in humans and animals both to assess the cognitive safety of CBD and to determine a beneficial potential of CBD on cognition. The PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Scopus databases were searched in December of 2022 for relevant articles using the following combinations of keywords: ("cannabidiol" OR "CBD") AND ("cognition" OR "processing cognitive" OR "memory" OR "language" OR "attention" OR "executive function" OR "social cognition" OR "perceptual motor ability" OR "processing speed").

Effect of Spent Coffee Grounds on the Crystallinity and Viscoelastic Behavior of Polylactic Acid Composites.

Waste Paper as a Valuable Resource: An Overview of Recent Trends in the Polymeric Composites Field.

This review focuses on polymeric waste-paper composites, including state-of-the-art analysis with quantitative and qualitative discussions. Waste paper is a valuable cellulose-rich material, produced mainly from office paper, newspaper, and paper sludge, which can be recycled and returned to paper production or used in a new life cycle. A systematic literature review found 75 publications on this material over the last 27 years, with half of those published during the last five years.

Valorization of Spent Coffee Grounds as Precursors for Biopolymers and Composite Production.

Spent coffee grounds (SCG) are a current subject in many works since coffee is the second most consumed beverage worldwide; however, coffee generates a high amount of waste (SCG) and can cause environmental problems if not discarded properly. Therefore, several studies on SCG valorization have been published, highlighting its waste as a valuable resource for different applications, such as biofuel, energy, biopolymer precursors, and composite production. This review provides an overview of the works using SCG as biopolymer precursors and for polymer composite production.

Depression and empathy in health professionals who work in the long-term care institutions for older adults.

Unlabelled: Empathy is an important factor to guarantee the quality of care provided in the long-term care institutions (LTCIs) for older adults, and depression is a factor that affects the health of the professional and, consequently, the care. Thus, it is important that studies are conducted on the relationship of these variables in this context.

Objective: The aim of this study is to verify the relationship between empathy and depressive symptoms among health professionals working in the LTCIs.

Recognition of Facial Expressions of Emotion and Depressive Symptoms among Caregivers with Different Levels of Empathy.

Objectives: To assess differences in the recognition of facial expressions of emotion among caregivers of older people with different levels of empathy.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 158 caregivers of older adults who provided care in family residences or nursing homes. The caregivers were divided into three groups based on the score of the multidimensional Interpersonal Reactivity Index: "lower empathy", "intermediate empathy", and "higher empathy".

Background: Snake venom phospholipases A (svPLA) are biologically active toxins, capable of triggering and modulating a wide range of biological functions. Among the svPLAs, crotoxin (CTX) has been in the spotlight of bioprospecting research due to its role in modulating immune response and hemostasis. In the present study, novel anticoagulant mechanisms of CTX, and the modulation of inflammation-induced coagulation were investigated.

Vascular Age as a Cardiovascular Risk Marker in Asymptomatic Patients with Type 2 Diabetes.

Aim: There is a wide variety of cardiovascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM), even in asymptomatic individuals. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis and can be considered as a predictor of cardiovascular risk (CVR). The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between CIMT-determined vascular age (VA), CVR scores, and thyroid function in asymptomatic patients with T2DM.

Angioarchitecture of collateral arteries of the aortic arch of Antillean manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus Linnaeus, 1758).

The aortic arrangement is an important structure associated with the maintenance of homeostasis. Based on this information, this study was conducted to describe the collateral arteries of the aortic arch of Antillean manatee and define the standard model for the species. Three specimens, an adult male, adult female and a male neonate, all strandings on the coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, were used.

Recognition of dynamic and static facial expressions of emotion among older adults with major depression.

Introduction: The recognition of facial expressions of emotion is essential to living in society. However, individuals with major depression tend to interpret information considered imprecise in a negative light, which can exert a direct effect on their capacity to decode social stimuli.

Objective: To compare basic facial expression recognition skills during tasks with static and dynamic stimuli in older adults with and without major depression.

Calcium and vitamin D supplementation and/or periodontal therapy in the treatment of periodontitis among Brazilian pregnant women: protocol of a feasibility randomised controlled trial (the IMPROVE trial).

Background: Periodontitis is a common oral inflammation, which is a risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Intakes of vitamin D and calcium are inversely associated with occurrence and progression of periodontitis. This study aims to assess the feasibility of a multi-component intervention, including provision of milk powder supplemented with calcium and vitamin D and periodontal therapy (PT), for improving maternal periodontal health and metabolic and inflammatory profiles of low-income Brazilian pregnant women with periodontitis.

Effect of different degradation types on properties of plastic waste obtained from espresso coffee capsules.

In terms of large use of plastic products, a necessity exists to minimize effects of the waste produced on environment by recycling, reuse and application in new products. In Brazil, the espresso coffee capsules are an emerging plastic waste, representing 0.9% of the coffee consumed in 2017.

Production of coagulation factor VII in human cell lines Sk-Hep-1 and HKB-11.

Recombinant factor VII (rFVII) is the main therapeutic choice for hemophilia patients who have developed inhibitory antibodies against conventional treatments (FVIII and FIX). Because of the post-translational modifications, rFVII needs to be produced in mammalian cell lines. In this study, for the first time, we have shown efficient rFVII production in HepG2, Sk-Hep-1, and HKB-11 cell lines.

Patents in therapeutic recombinant protein production using mammalian cells.

The industrial production of recombinant proteins preferentially requires the generation of stable cell lines expressing proteins in a quick, relatively facile, and a reproducible manner. Different methods are used to insert exogenous DNA into the host cell, and choosing the appropriate producing cell is of paramount importance for the efficient production and quality of the recombinant protein. This review addresses the advances in recombinant protein production in mammalian cell lines, according to key patents from the last 30 years.

Testing for urinary hyaluronate improves detection and grading of transitional cell carcinoma.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to establish a method for the diagnosis and grading of transitional cell carcinoma (TCC), which is responsible for 90% of bladder tumors, using a recently developed ultrasensitive assay for the measurement of hyaluronan (HA).

Materials And Methods: Urine samples were collected prior to surgery (cystoscopy, transurethral resection for bladder cancer (TURBT), and cystectomy) in 350 patients. After the procedure, pathologic examination revealed that 160 patients had TCC.
