Background: Low back pain (LBP) is an understudied condition among runners, and it is unclear what biomechanical features could be targeted for gait retraining to mitigate pain.

Research Question: How do running biomechanics differ between healthy individuals and those with running-related LBP?

Methods: This was a case-controlled, comparative study design of community runners: running-related LBP (n=52) and healthy controls (n=52). All runners completed running history forms and performed a 3-dimensional gait analysis.

Pilot Study on Therapeutic Horticulture for Chronic Low Back Pain: A Mixed Methods Study.

Background: Chronic low back pain (LBP) is common and associated with disability worldwide. Therapists trained in Therapeutic Horticulture (TH) use gardening activities and proximity to nature for therapy and rehabilitation. Patients seeking care for LBP would benefit physically and psychologically from participating in TH.

Malignant Epiretinal Membrane After Proton Beam Radiation of Ciliary Body Melanoma.

Purpose: To report the development of malignant epiretinal membrane after radiation of ciliary body melanoma.

Case Report: A 65-year-old woman was referred for evaluation of a ciliary body tumor in her right eye. On examination, a pigmented ciliary body tumor, displacing the iris anteriorly, was visible superotemporally and ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed a large solid ciliary body tumor.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion in the melanoma research community.

The inaugural Diversity and Inclusion in Science Session was held during the 2021 Society for Melanoma Research (SMR) congress. The goal of the session was to discuss diversity, equity, and inclusion in the melanoma research community and strategies to promote the advancement of underrepresented melanoma researchers. An international survey was conducted to assess the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) climate among researchers and clinicians within the Society for Melanoma Research (SMR).

Treatment of Uveal Melanoma With Radioactive Iodine 125 Implant Compared With Proton Beam Radiotherapy.

Objective: To review the current state of radiation therapy for uveal melanoma and compare particle radiation and brachytherapy.

Patients And Methods: The medical records of 156 patients treated for uveal melanoma between May 30, 2012, and March 16, 2020, were retrospectively reviewed. Treatments consisted of either radioactive iodine 125 implant (RAI) or fractionated proton radiation (proton beam therapy [PBT]).

Background: Delirium is a serious neuropsychiatric syndrome, which requires timely treatment. However, it is easily missed, especially in older patients with premorbid cognitive disorders.

Polyamorphism Mirrors Polymorphism in the Liquid-Liquid Transition of a Molecular Liquid.

Liquid-liquid transitions between two amorphous phases in a single-component liquid have courted controversy. All known examples of liquid-liquid transitions in molecular liquids have been observed in the supercooled state, suggesting an intimate connection with vitrification and locally favored structures inhibiting crystallization. However, there is precious little information about the local molecular packing in supercooled liquids, meaning that the order parameter of the transition is still unknown.

Can CT imaging improve targeting accuracy in clip-based proton therapy of ocular melanoma?

To evaluate the benefit of adding CT imaging to the simulation process of clip-based proton therapy of ocular melanomas. For thirty ocular melanoma cases, the clip position in the eye model was determined based on orthogonal radiographs as well as on a CT image set. The geometrical shift of the clips between the standard simulation process and standard simulation process with addition of CT imaging (CT-guided) was determined.

Multiloculated Ciliary Body Cysts and Lenticular Coloboma: A Rare Phenotypic Variation Associated With Persistent Fetal Vasculature.

A case of a 4 year-old boy with persistent fetal vasculature, lenticular coloboma, and a benign, multiloculated ciliary body mass is reviewed. The presence of ciliary body cysts in association with persistent fetal vasculature is sparsely reported. Its presence in a child can cause a diagnostic dilemma and lead to amblyopia.

Non-destructive mobile monitoring of microbial contaminations on meat surfaces using porphyrin fluorescence intensities.

A non-destructive mobile system for meat quality monitoring was developed and investigated for the possible application along the whole production chain of fresh meat. Pork and lamb meat was stored at 5 °C for up to 20 days post mortem and measured with a fluorescence spectrometer. Additionally, the bacterial influence on the fluorescence signals was evaluated by different experimental procedures.

Combined orbital proptosis and exudative retinal detachment as initial manifestations of acute myeloid leukemia.

We report bilateral orbital and choroidal involvement as the presenting sign of acute myeloid leukemia in a 2-year-old white girl. The patient presented with painless proptosis and subconjunctival hemorrhage. Ophthalmic examination and magnetic resonance imaging revealed bilateral leukemic infiltrates of the orbits and choroid, with an exudative retinal detachment in the right eye.

Development of a body condition scoring index for female African elephants validated by ultrasound measurements of subcutaneous fat.

Obesity-related health and reproductive problems may be contributing to non-sustainability of zoo African elephant (Loxodonta africana) populations. However, a major constraint in screening for obesity in elephants is lack of a practical method to accurately assess body fat. Body condition scoring (BCS) is the assessment of subcutaneous fat stores based on visual evaluation and provides an immediate appraisal of the degree of obesity of an individual.

Nocardia brasiliensis endophthalmitis in a patient with an exposed Ahmed glaucoma drainage implant.

Purpose: To report a case of endophthalmitis due to Nocardia brasiliensis in an eye with an exposed, infected Ahmed glaucoma drainage implant (GDI).

Design: Retrospective case report.

Methods: A patient with an exposed GDI experienced recurrent episodes of endophthalmitis despite repeated intravitreal injections of antibiotics and steroids.

A retrospective cohort study of clinical outcomes for intravitreal crystalline retained lens fragments after age-related cataract surgery: a comparison of same-day versus delayed vitrectomy.

Background: This analysis compared outcomes for same-day (under a no-move, no-wait policy) versus delayed vitrectomy for intravitreal crystalline retained lens fragments after surgery for age-related cataract.

Methods: This was a retrospective, nonrandomized treatment comparison cohort study with a consecutive series of 35 eyes (23 same-day, 12 delayed) receiving both cataract surgery and vitrectomy at the Mayo Clinic Florida between 1999 and 2010. Outcome measures included visual acuity (VA), glaucoma progression, visual utility, and complications.

Effects of different storage conditions on quality related porphyrin fluorescence signatures of pork slices.

This study evaluated the potential of fluorescence as an indicator of pork quality by determining the effects of various conditions on fluorescence signatures (excitation at 420 nm, emission at 550-750 nm). Storage of porcine musculus longissimus dorsi in PE bags led to a clear increase in porphyrin fluorescence intensity after approx. 10 d post mortem.

Outbreak of toxic anterior segment syndrome following cataract surgery associated with impurities in autoclave steam moisture.

Background: Toxic anterior segment syndrome (TASS), a complication of cataract surgery, is a sterile inflammation of the anterior chamber of the eye. An outbreak of TASS was recognized at an outpatient surgical center and its affiliated hospital in December 2002.

Methods: Medical records of patients who underwent cataract surgery during the outbreak were reviewed, and surgical team members who participated in the operations were interviewed.

Processing effects on physicochemical properties of creams formulated with modified milk fat.

Type of thermal process [high temperature, short time pasteurization (HTST) or ultra-high temperature pasteurization (UHT)] and homogenization sequence (before or after pasteurization) were examined for influence on the physicochemical properties of natural cream (20% milk fat) and creams formulated with 20% low-melt, fractionated butteroil emulsified with skim milk, or buttermilk and butter-derived aqueous phase. Homogenization sequence influenced physicochemical makeup of the creams. Creams homogenized before pasteurization contained more milk fat surface material, higher phospholipid levels, and less protein at the milk fat interface than creams homogenized after pasteurization.

The antiphospholipid antibody syndrome.

Antiphospholipid syndrome includes elevation of either the lupus anticoagulant titer or the anticardiolipin antibody titer on two occasions, separated by 6 weeks in a patient with an episode of thrombosis. The eye is involved frequently in patients with antiphospholipid syndrome. Patients with retinal vascular disease and none of the usual risk factors for retinal vascular disease should be considered at risk for expressing this syndrome.

A case of bilateral optic neuropathy in a patient on tacrolimus (FK506) therapy after liver transplantation.

Purpose: To report a case of bilateral optic neuropathy in a patient receiving tacrolimus (FK 506, Prograf; Fujisawa USA, Inc, Deerfield, Illinois) for immunosuppression after orthotropic liver transplantation.

Method: Case report. In a 58-year-old man receiving tacrolimus after orthotropic liver transplantation, serial neuro-ophthalmologic examinations and laboratory studies were performed.

Binocular vertical diplopia due to subretinal neovascular membrane.

Diplopia is an uncommon finding in patients with subretinal neovascular membranes. We present two patients with binocular diplopia secondary to subretinal neovascular membranes and the foveal displacement syndrome. Subjective diplopia was not improved by prism therapy in either case.

Skeinoid fibers in mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body.

Unlike smooth muscle elsewhere in the body, the smooth muscle of the iris and ciliary body is derived from neuroectoderm (mesectoderm). Leiomyomas that arise from the ciliary body, and therefore are of mesectodermal origin, may resemble spindle cell neurogenic tumors by light microscopy. They show positive immunostaining for smooth muscle actin but negative staining for neural markers.

Tropicamide eyedrops cannot be used for reliable diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Objective: To evaluate the mydriatic effect of tropicamide eyedrops as a diagnostic test for Alzheimer's disease.

Material And Methods: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, we assessed pupillary responses in 22 normal control subjects, 23 patients with probable Alzheimer's disease, 4 patients with isolated memory difficulty, and 6 patients with non-Alzheimer's dementia. Three separate studies were performed, the second and third on a subset of the original group.

Clinical features and treatment of seven patients with carcinoid tumor metastatic to the eye and orbit.

Purpose: To understand better the clinical features, treatment, and outcome of patients with carcinoid tumors metastatic to the eye and orbit.

Methods: We studied seven patients with carcinoid tumors metastatic to the eye and orbit who were initially examined at the Mayo Clinic between 1974 and 1992. Carcinoid tumors metastasized to the choroid of six eyes of four patients and unilaterally to the orbit in three additional patients.
