Background: Over the past few years there has been a decrease in the number of applicants applying to podiatric medical school. It has been suggested that this may be due to unfamiliarity with the profession of podiatric medicine. The goal of this study is to shed light on the misconceptions and lack of awareness of podiatric medicine so that the profession can better bridge the gap in knowledge with a resultant strategy to better increase recruiting efforts.

Context: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has diverse applications across various clinical specialties, serving as an adjunct to clinical findings and as a tool for increasing the quality of patient care. Owing to its multifunctionality, a growing number of medical schools are increasingly incorporating POCUS training into their curriculum, some offering hands-on training during the first 2 years of didactics and others utilizing a longitudinal exposure model integrated into all 4 years of medical school education. Midwestern University Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (MWU-AZCOM) adopted a 4-year longitudinal approach to include POCUS education in 2017.

Serial evaluation of liver enzyme activities in dogs with pulmonary coccidioidomycosis administered fluconazole.

Pulmonary coccidioidomycosis is a relatively common fungal disorder in dogs that have lived in or traveled to endemic regions and fluconazole is a common antifungal treatment. Liver enzymopathy can occur with fluconazole administration, but the frequency of occurrence nor potentially associative factors have been explored in dogs with pulmonary coccidioidomycosis. Therefore, our objectives were to describe the occurrence and magnitude of liver enzyme activity (LEA) elevation in dogs with pulmonary coccidioidomycosis during treatment with fluconazole and identify variables associated with liver enzymopathy.

Introduction: This pilot study aimed to evaluate whether and how physician associate/assistant (PA) program medical directors play a role in advocating on behalf of PAs and what factors correlate with this.

Methods: The study used a mixed-methods grounded theory approach and was deemed institutional review board exempt. After literature review, a survey was developed and piloted by study personnel and faculty to affirm validity.

Early detection on-farm and with minimal training would allow additional time for management decisions to minimize economic losses. Perspectives on remote learning of orthotic fabrication by certified hand therapists.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic caused disruption to continuing educational opportunities for hand therapists. In response, some courses were offered via online platforms, including virtual orthotic fabrication courses. It is important to determine the effectiveness and benefits of these courses for educating certified hand therapists and examine if remote learning of orthotic fabrication skills has continued merit and relevance.

Identification of risk factors associated with acute kidney injury in patients taking sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors.

Study Objective: Studies have demonstrated sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are kidney protective; however, their ability to cause hemodynamic changes may predispose patients to acute kidney injury (AKI). An FDA warning recommends evaluating for factors that predispose patients to AKI before initiating a SGLT2 inhibitor. The primary objective of this study is to identify risk factors that may predispose persons with diabetes to AKI when initiating SGLT2 inhibitor therapy.

Background: Fetoscopic laser coagulation of placental anastomoses reverses the pathological process in twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, thereby increasing survival, but there are a paucity of studies addressing long-term neurodevelopmental outcome of survivors. This study aimed to ascertain the presence of neurodevelopmental disabilities in child survivors of monochorionic pregnancies managed by placental laser photocoagulation in the Australian state of Victoria.
