In the cold, the absence of the mitochondrial uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) results in hyper-recruitment of beige fat, but classical brown fat becomes atrophied. Here we examine possible mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. We confirm that in brown fat from UCP1-knockout (UCP1-KO) mice acclimated to the cold, the levels of mitochondrial respiratory chain proteins were diminished; however, in beige fat, the mitochondria seemed to be unaffected.

Drug Polymeric Carrier of Aceclofenac Based on Amphiphilic Chitosan Micelles.

Amphiphilic micelles based on chitosan (CS) were applied as drug carriers of aceclofenac (ACF) as a potential method to induce its bioavailability and therapeutic efficiency. -octyl-,-succinyl CS (OSCS), an amphiphilic CS derivative, was successfully synthesized and loaded physically by ACF at different pH values and using different dosages of ACF, forming ACF-loaded polymeric micelles (PMs). The obtained PMs and ACF-loaded PMs were characterized by different analytical techniques, including AFM, TEM, DLS, UV-vis spectrophotometry, H NMR spectroscopy, and FT-IR spectroscopy.

Use of Isothermal Microcalorimetry to Measure Cellular Heat Production in Thermogenic Adipocytes.

Induction of thermogenesis in brown and brite adipocytes has recently emerged as a therapeutic target for novel anti obesogenic therapies necessitating the development of methods that can accurately measure heat production in these cells. Modern isothermal microcalorimetric techniques allow for the high throughput quantitative measurement of cellular heat production with limited sample material. Here, we describe the application of this technique for the measurement of thermogenesis in both floating and adherent adipocytes from various murine depots and human cell lines.

Smoking and Fibrocystic Changes in the Breast: A Case Report of a Lifelong Smoker and Changes in Breast Parenchyma.

Smoking is a well-known risk factor for breast cancer, and the nicotine in cigarette smoke has been associated with fibrotic changes in the breast. Although considered benign, these changes have the potential to make surgical dissection more difficult and may increase the risk of surgical complications. Here we discuss the case of a middle-aged female who was a lifelong smoker with breast cancer and who underwent a simple mastectomy.

The effect of transarterial embolization versus nephrectomy on acute kidney injury in blunt renal trauma patients.

Purpose: The impact of transarterial embolization (TAE) and nephrectomy on acute kidney injury (AKI) in blunt renal trauma patients remains unclear, and we used the National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) to investigate this issue.

Methods: Adult patients from the NTDB between 2007 and 2015 who survived traumatic events with blunt injuries were eligible for inclusion. The exclusion criteria were those without outcome information, who required dialysis, or with chronic renal failure prior to the traumatic injury.

Cardioprotective effects of dantrolene in doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy in mice.

Background: Doxorubicin (Dox) is a potent chemotherapeutic agent, but its usage is limited by dose-dependent cardiotoxicity. Intracellular calcium dysregulation has been reported to be involved in doxorubicin-induced cardiomyopathy (DICM). The cardioprotective role of RyR stabilizer dantrolene (Dan) on the calcium dynamics of DICM has not yet been explored.

The Link between Chronic Pain and Depression in Low Income Country, Pakistan.

Objective: To examine the relationship of subjective and physiological variables of pain in relation to depression among patients with chronic pain.

Methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted at the Centre for Clinical Psychology in Lahore, Pakistan, from January to June 2016, and comprised patients with organic, identifiable chronic pain presenting at various government, semi-government and private hospitals. Data was collected using a personal history questionnaire, West Haven-Yale Multidimensional Pain Inventory and the depression subscale of the Symptom Checklist Revised.
