Microplastic contamination is a growing marine environmental issue with possible consequences for seafood safety. Filter feeders are the target species for microplastic (MPs) pollution because they filter large quantities of seawater to feed. In the present study, an experimental contamination of was conducted using a mixture of the main types of MPs usually present in the seawater column (53% filaments, 30% fragments, 3% granules) in order to test the purification process as a potential method for removing these contaminants from bivalves intended for human consumption.

Background: There is conflicting evidence on predictors of nursing degree completion. Identification of predictors of student desire to continue their education could be important in developing strategies for encouraging and supporting students to complete their university-level nursing education.

Aim: To explore the factors associated with the enrollment in the first graduate year of nursing studies, progression from the first to the third year of university undergraduate nursing study, and the desire of third-year undergraduate students to continue nursing education at the graduate level.

Background: Academic success of students in nursing education is an issue causing concern in many parts of the world because of the shortage of nurses in the labour market, versatility of the educational programs and status of the students during studies and after graduation.

Objectives: To determine the predictors of academic success and educational aspirations of secondary nursing school students to enrol in higher education programs.

Participants And Methods: This cross-sectional study included 312 students (92.

Orthodontic miniscrews are exposed to three mechanical loading phases during clinical use: torsional loading upon insertion, flexural loading during anchorage function, and torsional loading upon removal. The aim of this study was to simulate clinical loading conditions for different types of orthodontic miniscrews in vitro to quantify the effects of combined torsional and bending stress. Various orthodontic miniscrew systems (Lomas, Dual-top, Aarhus anchorage, Tomas-pin and T.

Purpose: During recent years, gene expression analyses based on DNA chip technologies have allowed for the genome-wide identification of genes potentially associated with growth processes in a variety of organs. The present study aims to identify genes differentially expressed in the growing temporomandibular joint cartilage by means of transcriptome analyses.

Material And Methods: In total, the condylar cartilage of 32 rats comprising 4 age groups (newborn, 10 days, 21 days, 8 weeks) were used for analysis.

Objective: To investigate the cranial base configuration in skeletal Class III patients to clarify the conflicting findings from literature.

Materials And Methods: Initial lateral radiographs of 54 skeletal Class III patients and 54 matched controls (Class I, II/1, II/2) aged 14 to 24 years were analyzed retrospectively for 21 cephalometric basicranial variables and jaw lengths relative to anterior cranial base length.

Results: In contrast to overall cranial base length, the anterior (N-S) and posterior (S-Ba, S-Ar) sections failed to show a significant reduction in Class III patients.

Treatment of mandibular condylar process fractures may be conservative or surgical. Both treatment approaches aim to reconstruct the articulating joint surfaces in a physiological position to the discoligamentary structures. The study comprised 1812 patients of Wuerzburg University who presented with a fracture of the mandibular condylar process between 1981 and 2001.

Objectives: To compare clinical outcomes of three different modalities of treatment for deep intra-bony defects.

Material And Methods: Fifty-six patients were paralleled for clinical parameters and randomly assigned to treatment. They displayed one angular defect each with an intra-bony component > or =3 mm, probing pocket depth (PPD) and probing attachment level (PAL) > or =7 mm, and plaque index (PI) <1.

Background: The role of laparoscopic colon resection in the management of colon cancer is still controversial. In this article, the surgical strategy and techniques are described, with further consideration of the oncologically relevant aspects.

Methods: Between March 1993 and July 2003, we performed laparoscopic right hemicolectomy in 56 patients with right colon carcinoma.

Aside from location, the complex anatomic relationships and advanced laparoscopic skills needed in selected cases of laparoscopic pancreas surgery have increased. We report a 55-year-old woman with cystic adenoma in the area of the corpus who was treated with complete laparoscopic corpus resection while preserving the head and tail of the pancreas and the spleen. The patient was placed in lithotomy position.

Aim: To evaluate clinical outcome 24 months after guided tissue regeneration (GTR) therapy of deep periodontal pockets in patients poorly responding to conventional flap surgery, to compare its efficacy with conventional flap surgery, and to analyze the factors associated with the healing outcome.

Methods: Twenty defects underwent GTR with ePTFE membranes. Clinical measurements were recorded at the baseline and at 6, 12 and 24 months after the surgery.
