New particle formation (NPF) in the tropical upper troposphere is a globally important source of atmospheric aerosols. It is known to occur over the Amazon basin, but the nucleation mechanism and chemical precursors have yet to be identified. Here we present comprehensive in situ aircraft measurements showing that extremely low-volatile oxidation products of isoprene, particularly certain organonitrates, drive NPF in the Amazonian upper troposphere.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how different dietary patterns are linked to the types of bacteria found below the gumline in participants with varying probing depths.
  • Researchers analyzed data from 651 participants, using dietary assessments and subgingival plaque samples to measure various microbial diversity metrics and taxa ratios.
  • Results showed that higher scores on dietary quality indices (AHEI and APDQS) were associated with lower microbial diversity and certain taxa ratios, indicating that nutritious diets might reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth.

Oxidized Organic Aerosol (OOA), a major component of fine atmospheric particles, impacts climate and human health. Previous experiments and atmospheric models emphasize the importance of nocturnal OOA formation from NO· oxidation of biogenic VOCs. This seasonal study extends the understanding by showing that nocturnal oxidation of biomass-burning emissions can account for up to half of total OOA production in fall and winter.

Objective: Gut microbes and microbe-dependent metabolites (eg, tryptophan-kynurenine-serotonin pathway metabolites) have been linked to systemic inflammation, but the microbiota-metabolite-inflammation axis remains uncharacterised in children. Here we investigated whether gut microbiota features and circulating metabolites (both microbe-dependent and non-microbe-dependent metabolites) associated with circulating inflammation markers in children.

Methods: We studied children from the prospective Gen3G birth cohort who had data on untargeted plasma metabolome (n=321 children; Metabolon platform), gut microbiota (n=147; 16S rRNA sequencing), and inflammation markers (plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, and tumour necrosis factor-α) measured at 5-7 years.

Article Synopsis
  • - The survey conducted from September 9-17, 2021, at the University of Minnesota aimed to assess if the COVID-19 vaccine mandate led to an increase in self-reported vaccination rates among students, staff, and faculty.
  • - While vaccine mandates can enhance public health, they must take into account their implementation context and the possible negative consequences on personal choice.
  • - The findings suggest that policymakers should gather data to make informed decisions regarding vaccine mandates while considering factors that might influence their effectiveness and public response.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares two methods of estimating kidney function (eGFRcysC and eGFRsCr) in heart transplant recipients, focusing on how body mass index (BMI), steroid use, and muscle mass affect accuracy.
  • Significant differences between the two eGFRs were noted, especially early after transplantation, with eGFRcysC showing more stability over time compared to eGFRsCr.
  • Using eGFRcysC can impact dosing for the medication valganciclovir, suggesting that 46% of patients would have required dosage adjustments, mostly reductions, highlighting the importance of accurate kidney function assessment.

Objectives: The risk of Post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) under hybrid immunity remains unclear.

Methods: Using data from the German National Cohort (NAKO Gesundheitsstudie), we investigated risk factors for self-reported post-infection symptoms (any PCC is defined as having at least one symptom, and high symptom burden PCC as having nine or more symptoms).

Results: Sixty percent of 109,707 participants reported at least one previous SARS-CoV-2 infection; 35% reported having had any symptoms 4-12 months after infection; among them 23% reported nine or more symptoms.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examined sarcopenia (muscle loss) in patients with heart failure (HF), those receiving left ventricular assist devices (LVAD), and heart transplant (HT) candidates, revealing a correlation between sarcopenia index (SI) and muscle mass/function outcomes.
  • - Researchers assessed blood samples for inflammatory markers and microbiota diversity in stool and saliva, finding that SI decreased with worsening HF and showed a rebound after surgical interventions, yet remained lower than baseline levels long-term.
  • - Notably, higher microbial diversity, particularly with the presence of the gut bacteria Roseburia inulinivorans, was linked to increased SI, suggesting a connection between gut health, inflammation, and muscle mass in heart disease

Background: With effective antiretroviral therapy, people with HIV (PWH) are living longer and aging; the majority of PWH in the United States are now over the age of 50 and in women have gone through the menopause transition. Menopause potentiates skeletal bone loss at the spine, hip, and radius in PWH. The alveolar bone which surronds the teeth is different than long bones because it is derived from the neural crest.
