Helminth extracellular vesicles co-opt host monocytes to drive T cell anergy.

Parasitic helminths secrete extracellular vesicles (EVs) into their host tissues to modulate immune responses, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We demonstrate that Ascaris EVs are efficiently internalised by monocytes in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells and increase the percentage of classical monocytes. Furthermore, EV treatment of monocytes induced a novel anti-inflammatory phenotype characterised by CD14, CD16, CC chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2) and programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) cells.

Long-term impact of congenital Zika virus infection on the rat hippocampus: Neuroinflammatory, glial alterations and sex-specific effects.

Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) is a condition that arises when a neonate presents with abnormalities resulting from Zika virus infection during gestation. While microcephaly is a prominent feature of the syndrome, other forms of brain damage are also observed, often accompanied by significant neurological complications. It is therefore essential to investigate the long-term effects of CZS, with special attention to sex differences, particularly concerning hippocampal function, given its vulnerability to viral infections.

Thriving Through Adaptation: Adaptive Sports after Spinal Cord Injury.

This article focuses on identifying how health care providers can support a person with spinal cord injury to pursue and maintain involvement in adaptive sports. Benefits and barriers of sport participation, equipment considerations, and recommendations on how to determine sport appropriateness for a person with spinal cord injury will be provided. The authors emphasize through appropriate medical management and consideration of level of disability, functional performance, psychological readiness, and individual preference, a health care provider can play a valuable role in connecting individuals with spinal cord injury to adaptive sports and recreation.

Importance of habit and environmental characteristics in shaping patterns of richness and range size of ferns and lycophytes in the Atlantic Forest.

Premise: Ferns and lycophytes, the two spore-bearing lineages of vascular plants, share a unique life cycle, and because of several morpho-ecophysiological similarities, are usually investigated as a unit, but they may have distinct ecological and environmental responses. Understanding the diversity and distribution patterns of ferns and lycophytes separately is essential for designing effective conservation strategies.

Methods: We assessed species richness and range sizes using range-diversity analyses and investigated environmental (climatic, edaphic) and ecological (endemism, habit diversity, specialization) predictors of these range and richness metrics using generalized linear models.

Air temperature and humidity impact out-of-hospital-cardiac-arrests in Germany: A 10-year cohort study from the German Resuscitation Registry.

Objectives: This study examines the impact of temperature variations on out-of-hospital-cardiac-arrests in Germany over a decade (2010-2019). Out-of-hospital-cardiac-arrests affects 164 per 100,000 inhabitants annually in Germany, 11% survive to hospital discharge. The following study investigates days with the following characteristics: summer days, frost days, and high humidity days.

Con-DAM: Simultaneous measurement of food intake and sleep in at the single fly resolution.

Sleep and feeding are conserved behaviors across many taxa of the animal kingdom and are essential for an organism's survival and fitness. Although has been used to study these behaviors for decades, concurrent measurement of these two behaviors in the same flies on solid media has been a challenge. Here, we report Con-DAM, which enables simultaneous quantification of food intake and sleep/activity at the single fly resolution.

A summary of the main themes and findings presented at the ASM Intermountain Branch meeting (2024).

The annual meeting for the Intermountain Branch was held in April 2024 on the campus of Brigham Young University. There were 127 branch members from Utah, Idaho, and Nevada who attended the meeting and were composed of undergraduate students, graduate or medical students, and faculty. This report highlights the diversity of, and the emerging trends in, the research conducted by American Society for Microbiology members in the Intermountain Branch.

The German Resuscitation Registry - Epidemiological data for out-of-hospital and in-hospital cardiac arrest.

Introduction: The German Resuscitation Registry was started in 2007 and collects data on out-of-hospital as well as in-hospital cardiac arrest and resuscitation. It has collected more than 400.000 datasets till today.

Risk of metabolic syndrome among law enforcement officers due to physical activity and posture behaviors.

Background: There are limited data on objectively measured activity and postural behaviors of law enforcement officers (LEOs) in relation to risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS).

Objectives: To examine the associations between objectively measured activity and postural behaviors and MetS risk among LEOs.

Methods: Thirty-one LEOs, mean (SD) age 33 (10) years, participated in the study.

[Impact of the 2020 lockdown on prehospital psychiatric emergencies in a large city].

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic represented a serious challenge for healthcare systems worldwide. Special psychiatric patients represent a vulnerable group and are particularly affected by lockdown interventions. Knowledge on the possible effects for this group of patients in an emergency physician setting is low.

Development of an automated manufacturing process for large-scale production of autologous T cell therapies.

Engineered T cell therapies have shown significant clinical success. However, current manufacturing capabilities present a challenge in bringing these therapies to patients. Furthermore, the cost of development and manufacturing is still extremely high due to complexity of the manufacturing process.

Analysis of cortical cell polarity by imaging flow cytometry.

Metastasis is the main cause of cancer-related death and therapies specifically targeting metastasis are highly needed. Cortical cell polarity (CCP) is a prometastatic property of circulating tumor cells affecting their ability to exit blood vessels and form new metastases that constitute a promising point of attack to prevent metastasis. However, conventional fluorescence microscopy on single cells and manual quantification of CCP are time-consuming and unsuitable for screening regulators.

Accelerometry-Based Classification of Circulatory States During Out-of-Hospital Cardiac Arrest.

Objective: Exploit accelerometry data for an automatic, reliable, and prompt detection of spontaneous circulation during cardiac arrest, as this is both vital for patient survival and practically challenging.

Methods: We developed a machine learning algorithm to automatically predict the circulatory state during cardiopulmonary resuscitation from 4-second-long snippets of accelerometry and electrocardiogram (ECG) data from pauses of chest compressions of real-world defibrillator records. The algorithm was trained based on 422 cases from the German Resuscitation Registry, for which ground truth labels were created by a manual annotation of physicians.

Alcohol use during COVID-19 pandemic on the long run: findings from a longitudinal study in Germany.

Background: The impact of COVID-induced stress on mental health and alcohol use has been demonstrated in recent research. However, there is a lack of longitudinal data since most studies reported on cross-sectional data. It remains unclear how alcohol use develops under the dynamic changes of the pandemic.

Electrocatalytic CO Reduction with a Binuclear Bis-Terpyridine Pyrazole-Bridged Cobalt Complex.

A pyrazole-based ligand substituted with terpyridine groups at the 3 and 5 positions has been synthesized to form the dinuclear cobalt complex 1, that electrocatalytically reduces carbon dioxide (CO ) to carbon monoxide (CO) in the presence of Brønsted acids in DMF. Chemical, electrochemical and UV-vis spectro-electrochemical studies under inert atmosphere indicate pairwise reduction processes of complex 1. Infrared spectro-electrochemical studies under CO and CO atmosphere are consistent with a reduced CO-containing dicobalt complex which results from the electroreduction of CO .

Impact of COVID-19 on out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: A registry-based cohort-study from the German Resuscitation Registry.

Introduction: The global COVID-19 pandemic effects people and the health system. Some international studies reported an increasing number of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). Comparable studies regarding the impact of COVID-19 on incidence and outcome of OHCA are not yet available for Germany.

Retrospective future thinking as a novel method to imagine the future: remembering autobiographical events from the perspective of the future self.

People think retrospectively about past events and prospectively about future events. Here, the novel method of retrospective future thinking is introduced to investigate the characteristics of autobiographical events reported as if they had been already experienced. In total, 166 participants were asked to (1) generate cultural life scripts and (2) to imagine themselves being 100-years old.

Survival after traumatic cardiac arrest is possible-a comparison of German patient-registries.

Background: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) due to trauma is rare, and survival in this group is infrequent. Over the last decades, several new procedures have been implemented to increase survival, and a "Special circumstances chapter" was included in the European Resuscitation Council (ERC) guidelines in 2015. This article analysed outcomes after traumatic cardiac arrest in Germany using data from the German Resuscitation Registry (GRR) and the TraumaRegister DGU® (TR-DGU) of the German Trauma Society.

Retrospective future thinking: Keeping distant personal future events mentally close.

By manipulating our basic mode of prospectively thinking about the future, the present study examines the effect of retrospective future thinking on future events imagined as if they had already taken place. Here, 142 young adults were randomly assigned to report five autobiographical future events either prospectively from the perspective of their current self or retrospectively, imagining events from the perspective of their 100-year-old self. Participants indicated the expected age of occurrence and assessed phenomenological characteristics for each event.

Heterolytic O-O Bond Cleavage Upon Single Electron Transfer to a Nonheme Fe(III)-OOH Complex.

The one-electron reduction of the nonheme iron(III)-hydroperoxo complex, [Fe (OOH)(L )] (L =N-methyl-N,N',N'-tris(2-pyridylmethyl)ethane-1,2-diamine), carried out at -70 °C results in the release of dioxygen and in the formation of [Fe (OH)(L )] following a bimolecular process. This reaction can be performed either with cobaltocene as chemical reductant, or electrochemically. These experimental observations are consistent with the disproportionation of the hydroperoxo group in the putative Fe (OOH) intermediate generated upon reduction of the Fe (OOH) starting complex.

Microscopic detection of Leptospira bacterial organisms in urine sediment from a young dog with leptospirosis and a review of the pathobiology and diagnosis of canine leptospirosis.

Samples collected from an 11-month-old Dachshund-mix dog with a history of acute azotemia, fever, and enlarged and irregular kidneys were received at the Colorado State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (CSU VDL). The submitting veterinarians were concerned about lymphoma versus acute nephritis/pyelonephritis. The CSU clinical pathology laboratory received urine for urinalysis and kidney aspirates for cytologic evaluation.

Research Audit on Clinical Utility of Dimensional Disruptive Mood and Behavior Psychopathologies in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Practice.

To investigate the utility of dimensional psychopathologies of disruptive mood and behavior disorders (DBDs) by applying latent profile analysis (LPA) for characterization of youth referred to the tertiary outpatient clinic of child and adolescent psychiatry clinic and pharmacological treatment choices. One hundred fifty-eight children and adolescents with significant DBDs symptoms participated. Core dimensional psychopathologies of DBDs (irritability, callous-unemotional trait, and reactive-proactive aggressive behavior), DSM diagnoses, prescribed medications, and behavioral and emotional problems (Child Behavior Checklist, CBCL) were measured at baseline (clinic intake) and at 3-month follow-up.
