Background/objectives: This study focuses on the development and evaluation of novel alginate-poly[2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]trimethylammonium chloride (PMETAC) microcapsules for encapsulating pancreatic islets to address insulin deficiency in diabetes.

Methods: In previous research, we fabricated and characterized PMETAC microcapsules, evaluating their stability and permeability in vitro. This study further probes the capsules in vivo, focusing on the functional activity of the encapsulated islets post-transplantation, their viability extension, and the assessment of the immunoprotective, antifibrotic properties, and biostability of the capsules.

The Aim Of The Study: We compare the effectiveness of multimodal optical coherence tomography (MM OCT) in the traditional structural OCT mode and the OCT elastography (OCE) mode in addressing two clinically important tasks: (1) detecting groups of tumor cells at surgical margins during breast-сonserving surgery (BСS) in breast cancer (BC) and (2) identifying breast tumor margins. The obtained results were correlated with corresponding histological sections.

The effect of vitamin D3 in the composition of original rectal suppositories on the content of products of oxidative modification of proteins in mucous membrane of the large intestine was studied in rats with experimental ulcerative colitis provoked by a two-stage administration of 3% oxazolone. The rectal suppositories with vitamin D3 (1500 IU) were administered every 12 h during 5 days. Condition of the rats was assessed according to disease activity index (DAI), while the content of oxidative modification products of proteins in the homogenate of the mucous membrane was assayed with extraction-spectrophotometric method in the lesion focus of large intestine.

Novel multiresponsive hybrid biocompatible systems of κ-carrageenan-graft-poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline-co-2-butyl-2-oxazoline)s with unique combination of responsiveness to external stimuli were synthesized and studied. The polymer thermoresponsive behavior proved the existence of both lower and upper critical solution temperatures in aqueous milieu, forming gel at lower temperature, a solution at room temperature and cloudy nanophase-separated dispersion at elevated temperature. The limit temperatures can easily be adjusted by the polyoxazoline graft length and grafting density.

We report on the physicochemical properties and self-assembly behavior of novel efficient pH-sensitive nanocontainers based on the Food and Drug Administration-approved anionic polymer Eudragit L100-55 (poly(methacrylic acid-co-ethyl acrylate) 1:1) and nonionic surfactant Brij98. The features of the interaction between Eudragit L100-55 and Brij98 at different pH values and their optimal ratio for nanoparticle formation were studied using isothermal titration calorimetry. The influence of the polymer-to-surfactant ratio on the size and structure of particles was studied at different pH values using dynamic light scattering and small-angle X-ray scattering methods.

The self-assembly thermodynamics of pH-sensitive di-block and tri-block gradient copolymers of acrylic acid and styrene was studied for the first time using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) performed at varying pH. We were able to monitor each step of micellization as a function of decreasing pH. The growth of micelles is a multi-stage process that is pH dependent with several exothermic and endothermic components.
