Injuries are common in competitive baseball players and can occur in all facets of the game. The majority of the existing literature on injuries in baseball players has focused on injuries secondary to the overhead throw with very little attention given to injuries sustained while batting. The baseball swing is a complex, often violent, motion that predisposes batters to a variety of injuries affecting the spine, trunk, pelvis, and extremities.

Regarding the problems with the current available drugs many research studies deal with the class of the dispirotripiperazine (DSTP)-based compounds. These are small molecules consisting of polycyclic saturated ring systems with positively charged nitrogen atoms. These compounds can interact with negatively charged HSPGs and thus block viral attachment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to develop a reliable method for measuring the size of talocalcaneal tarsal coalitions (TCCs) using MRI, addressing the lack of standardization in current literature.
  • Twenty-seven patients were evaluated, and five independent raters measured various dimensions of the TCCs and surrounding healthy cartilage using specific MRI guidelines to assess inter-rater reliability.
  • Results showed good to excellent reliability for the measurements, with high intraclass correlation coefficients indicating that the new measurement techniques can be consistently applied by different examiners.

Background: Studies have reported favorable clinical outcomes after osteochondral allograft (OCA) transplantation to treat osteochondral defects and have demonstrated that healing of the osseous component may be critical to outcomes. However, there is currently no consensus on the optimal modality to evaluate osseous healing.

Purpose: To define parameters for OCA healing using computed tomography (CT) and to investigate whether osseous healing identified using CT is correlated with improved pain and function on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) collected closest in time to the postoperative CT scan and at final follow-up.

Herpesviruses are widespread and can cause serious illness. Many currently available antiviral drugs have limited effects, result in rapid development of resistance, and often exhibit dose-dependent toxicity. Especially for human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), new well-tolerated compounds with novel mechanisms of action are urgently needed.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) has been implicated in the development of human malignancies, for instance in colon cancer. Proteasome inhibitors were developed for cancer therapy and have also been shown to influence HCMV infection. The aim of this study was to investigate if proteasome inhibitors have therapeutic potential for colon carcinoma and how this is influenced by HCMV infection.

Viruses are obligate intracellular parasites and have evolved to enter the host cell. To gain access they come into contact with the host cell through an initial adhesion, and some viruses from different genus may use heparan sulfate proteoglycans for it. The successful inhibition of this early event of the infection by synthetic molecules has always been an attractive target for medicinal chemists.

Conformal Dynamic Arcs (CDA) can provide a useful alternative in certain clinical situations which require a higher level of 3-dimensional (3D) conformation than shaped static fields but for which modulated fields (fixed or arc) are inappropriate. Due to lack of modulation, the quality of the dose distribution produced by a CDA is highly dependent on the specific patient geometry. The ideal geometry for a CDA, in terms of achievable conformation and uniformity, is a spherical target perfectly centered in a cylindrical medium or body and utilizing a full 360 degree of rotation.

Pituitary adenomas (PAs) are intracranial tumors associated with significant morbidity due to hormonal dysregulation, mass effects and have a heavy treatment burden. Growth hormone (GH)-secreting PAs (somatotropinomas) cause acromegaly-gigantism. Genetic forms of somatotropinomas due to germline AIP mutations (AIPmut+) have an early onset and are aggressive and resistant to treatment with somatostatin analogs (SSAs), including octreotide.

Normal hematopoietic function is maintained by a well-controlled balance of myelomonocytic, megaerythroid and lymphoid progenitor cell populations which may be skewed during pathologic conditions. Using semisolid in vitro cultures supporting the growth of myelomonocytic (CFU-GM) and erythroid (BFU-E) colonies, we investigated skewed differentiation towards the myelomonocytic over erythroid commitment in 81 patients with myelofibrosis (MF). MF patients had significantly increased numbers of circulating CFU-GM and BFU-E.

Interferon-α (IFN-α)-based treatments can induce hematologic and molecular responses (HRs and MRs, respectively) in polycythemia vera (PV); however, patients do not respond equally. Germline genetic factors have been implicated in differential drug responses. We addressed the effect of common germline polymorphisms on HR and MR after treatment of PV in the PROUD-PV and CONTINUATION-PV studies in a total of 122 patients who received ropeginterferon alfa-2b.

Background: Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) is a common disorder of the hip resulting in groin pain and ultimately osteoarthritis. Radiologic assessment of FAI morphologies, which may present with overlapping radiologic features of hip dysplasia, often requires the use of computed tomography (CT) for evaluation of osseous abnormality, owing to the difficulty of direct visualization of cortical and subchondral bone with conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The use of a zero echo time (ZTE) MRI pulse sequence may obviate the need for CT by rendering bone directly from MRI.

Background: Oblique sagittal MRI sequences, orthogonal to the longitudinal axis of the brachial plexus, can reliably depict morphologic and signal abnormalities. However, nerve visualization may be obscured by ghosting artifact from periodic respiratory motion. Respiratory triggering (RT) with a thoracoabdominal bellows can reduce ghosting artifact, but it is not routinely used for brachial plexus MRI.
