Introduction: Medially routed biceps-to-triceps tendon transfer for elbow extension reconstruction in spinal cord injury (SCI) has proven to be a reliable procedure. This technique classically places the tendon transfer superficial to a paralyzed ulnar nerve, with a theoretical risk of compression neuropathy.

Case Presentation: A 21-year-old male with a C5 American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale (AIS) grade B SCI who underwent bilateral biceps-to-triceps tendon transfers presented with new-onset paresthesias in the ring and small fingers 10.

Arterialized venous flaps (AVFs) are an innovative option in hand reconstruction. Their exact vascular physiology and survival mechanisms remain unclear. We report on two hand reconstruction cases with AVFs.

Facial vascularized composite allotransplantation has emerged as a groundbreaking reconstructive solution for patients with severely disfiguring facial injuries. The authors report on the first Canadian face transplant. A 64-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound, which resulted in extensive midface bony and soft-tissue damage involving the lower two-thirds of the face.

We report a case of medial femoral trochlea flap used for scaphoid proximal pole reconstruction, in which the transverse branch of the descending genicular artery was vestigial. The medial metaphyseal periosteal artery was clearly the dominant pedicle supplying the trochlear region. The flap was safely raised on the medial metaphyseal periosteal artery pedicle.

Background: Electrical isolation of the pulmonary veins is recognized as the cornerstone of non-pharmacological treatment of Atrial Fibrillation (AF), and therefore, has been recommended as the first step in AF ablation according to all guidelines. Even though the cryoballoon technology is widely used in North America and Europe, this experience is still incipient in many developing countries such as Brazil.

Objective: To evaluate initial results regarding success and safety of the new technology in patients with persistent and paroxysmal AF.

Split-thickness skin autografts (AGs) are the standard surgical treatment for severe burn injuries. However, the treatment of patients with substantial skin loss is limited by the availability of donor sites for skin harvesting. As an alternative to skin autografts, our research group developed autologous self-assembled skin substitutes (SASSs), allowing the replacement of both dermis and epidermis in a single surgical procedure.

Introduction: Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a rare and recently described type of peripheral T-cell lymphoma. Fewer than 550 cases have been reported worldwide. Although BIA-ALCL is usually indolent, early diagnosis and treatment have been shown to improve outcome.

Background: To prevent postoperative thrombosis, indications for anticoagulation in finger replantation have been described, but no consensus has yet been found for cessation protocols. The aim of this study is to investigate cessation methods of intravenous anticoagulation after finger replantation.

Methods: A retrospective review of all patients treated for a finger replantation between December 2014 and July 2016 was performed.

Background: Staged expander-to-implant breast reconstruction is plagued by a high prevalence of complications. We have employed an alternative approach of using the infra-mammary crease (IMF) for expander-to-implant exchange. The IMF approach was thought to utilize healthier tissues, which are believed to be less affected by the process of tissue expansion, and reside distant from the field of the radiotherapy boost.

Study Objective: In 2007, the WHO adopted surgical safety as the theme for the 2nd global patient safety challenge. Measurement of surgical services was identified as a surgical care area in need of major improvements. Aware of this recommendation, a preliminary study was conducted in our hospital and showed that the incidence of complete necrosis in free flap surgery was 10.

In forensic sciences, the fate of abstracts presented at international meetings has not yet been assessed. The purpose of this study is to estimate publication ratio and evaluate possible predictors of publication after the 58th edition of the 2006 American Academy of Forensic Sciences annual meeting. Section of the meeting, type of presentation (oral platform or poster), number of authors per abstract and per paper, time span to publication, countries involved, and journal of publication were tabulated.

The classification of asphyxia and the definitions of subtypes are far from being uniform, varying widely from one textbook to another and from one paper to the next. Unfortunately, similar research designs can lead to totally different results depending on the definitions used. Closely comparable cases are called differently by equally competent forensic pathologists.

The pathophysiology of hanging is still poorly understood. This article presents a review of eight animal models: four models of isolated occlusion of the vessels of the neck (group 1), one model of combined tracheal and vessel occlusion (group 2), and three models of true animal hanging (group 3). Occlusion of the airway passages in group 2 did not accelerate respiratory arrest compared to group 1.

There are still several areas of forensic pathology mainly based on tradition, with textbooks explaining and describing common knowledge that is not supported by modern research data. This study is intended to contribute to evidence-based data on nonchemical suffocation deaths in the forensic population aged more than 1 year. From 2000 to 2005, all autopsy cases were reviewed: age, gender, type of suffocation, and manner of death were compiled for all victims (96 cases).
