Bedside Magnetocardiography with a Scalar Sensor Array.

Decades of research have shown that magnetocardiography (MCG) has the potential to improve cardiac care decisions. However, sensor and system limitations have prevented its widespread adoption in clinical practice. We report an MCG system built around an array of scalar, optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) that effectively rejects ambient magnetic interference without magnetic shielding.

Spine injections: the rationale for CT guidance.

Back pain is one of the most common medical problems and is associated with high socioeconomic costs. Imaging-guided spinal injections are a minimally invasive method to evaluate where the back pain is originating from, and to treat patients with radicular pain or spinal stenosis with infiltration of corticosteroids. CT-guided spine injections are a safe procedure, characterized by precise needle placement, excellent visualization of the relevant anatomical structures, and low radiation exposure for the patient and the interventional radiologist.

Assessment of hepatic fibrosis and inflammation with look-locker T1 mapping and magnetic resonance elastography with histopathology as reference standard.

The Balkan Peninsula played an important role in the evolution of many Mediterranean plants and served as a major source for post-Pleistocene colonisation of central and northern Europe. Its complex geo-climatic history and environmental heterogeneity significantly influenced spatiotemporal diversification and resulted in intricate phylogeographic patterns. To explore the evolutionary dynamics and phylogeographic patterns within the widespread eastern Mediterranean and central European species , we used a combination of phylogenomic (restriction-site associated DNA sequencing, RADseq) and phylogenetic (sequences of the plastid marker F) data as well as species distribution models generated for the present and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM).

Probing dark exciton navigation through a local strain landscape in a WSe monolayer.

In WSe monolayers, strain has been used to control the energy of excitons, induce funneling, and realize single-photon sources. Here, we developed a technique for probing the dynamics of free excitons in nanoscale strain landscapes in such monolayers. The strawberry tree fruit and leaf are a rich source of minerals, easily digestible sugars, dietary fibers, vitamins (especially vitamin C) and many bioactive compounds of significant functional value. Due to their favorable chemical composition, fruits have recently become increasingly popular in consumption. The aim of this study was to determine the physical-chemical composition, content of bioactive compounds, and also the antioxidant capacity of the fruit and leaves of wild strawberry tree populations among the Adriatic coast in Croatia, as well as to investigate the influence of location on the content of specific bioactive compounds.

Background: The mass migrations experienced by the Western Balkans in the past decades have significantly changed the demographic structures and have probably altered the prevalence of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs) among blood donors. However, data on the prevalence of TTIs in the Western Balkans countries remain incomplete. This study reports the prevalence of TTIs among blood donors in Serbia in the period 2005-2017.

Morphological, genetic and epigenetic aspects of homoploid hybridization between Salvia officinalis L. and Salvia fruticosa Mill.

The inheritance of phenotypic, genetic and epigenetic traits in hybridization events is difficult to predict, as numerous evolutionary, ecological, and genetic factors can play a crucial role in the process of hybridization. In the middle Adriatic island of Vis, we investigated hybridization between Salvia officinalis and S. fruticosa at morphological, genetic and epigenetic levels.

Purpose: To evaluate the interreader agreement of a three-tier craniocaudal grading system for brown fat activation and investigate the accuracy of the distinction between the three grades.

Materials And Methods: After IRB approval, 340 cases were retrospectively selected from patients undergoing (18)FDG-PET/CT between 2007 and 2015 at our institution, with 85 cases in each grade and 85 controls with no active brown fat. Three readers evaluated all cases independently.

The genus Knautia (Caprifoliaceae, Dipsacoideae) encompasses 40-60 species mainly distributed in western Eurasia, with highest species diversity in the Alps and the Balkan Peninsula. It is traditionally regarded as one of the taxonomically most challenging European genera due to the widespread occurrence of polyploidy, the high incidence of hybridisation and the maintenance of morphologically intermediate forms. A prerequisite for assessing the complex spatiotemporal diversification of a polyploid group is a comprehensive hypothesis of the phylogenetic relationships among its diploid members.

The impact of the July 2007 heat wave on daily mortality in Belgrade, Serbia.

Objective: Mortality has been shown to increase with heat waves. Serbia experienced the hottest heat wave in July 2007. In this study, we examined patterns of non-traumatic excess mortality in Belgrade during this event.

Background: The giant, invasive basal cell carcinoma of the scalp is a rare clinical form of this tumor that appears on the skin, but may spread to some of the following structures: soft tissues of the scalp, bones, meninges, and the brain. In literature, so far, it is known as the GBCC. It is caused by aggressive BCC subtypes.

[Transfusion management of patients with alloanti-Gerbich antibodies: case report].

Introduction: Transfusion management of patients who are alloimmunized against high-prevalence erythrocyte antigens is often problematic. Strategy management depends, not only on the specific clinical circumstances of the patient, but also on the acceptable time frame. In patients without clinically significant antibody incompatible transfusion it may be less harmful than delaying medical intervention.

[Risk factors for syphilis infection in the South Backa blood donor population].

Introduction: Syphilis is one of infectious diseases that can be transmitted by blood transfusion. Determining the frequency of syphilis among blood donors and the relevant risk factors is an important aspect of safe blood transfusion.

Objective: To determine the frequency and the trend of syphilis infection among blood donors in South Backa Region, to classify the confirmed infection and to describe demographic characteristics of seropositive blood donors and their risk factors.

[Emergency surgical procedures in neonates and infants over a 20-year period].

The authors analyse their experience concerning emergency treatments during the twenty year period at their Surgical department in which there never was a pediatric surgeon. The most common surgical procedures are presented, which should be carried out in emergency; it is accentuated that such patients have also to be surgically treated in Subregional hospital's Centers, in which there are no the necessary conditions; that does oblige the general surgeon to pay attention in his everyday activities to these small but delicate patients. Newborns and breastfed babies together with acute surgical disorders, can often have other health problems (or associated diseases), so that there is a necessity of team work and close collaboration between surgeon, anesthesiologist, pediatrician and radiologist in the managing of such patients.
