Brachycephalic breeds suffer from respiratory distress known as brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) and the multiple comorbidities associated with it. Targeted breeding toward a more BOAS-free phenotype requires accurate and least invasive detection of BOAS severity grades that are accessible and accepted by the breeders and kennel clubs. This study aimed to compare the-outcome of morphometric anatomical examination with functional tests such as exercise tests and plethysmography for the detection of BOAS severity in a group of 84 French Bulldogs.

High-pressure and low-temperature structural changes in the ferroelectric phase of (R)-3-quinuclidinol are analysed. The changes in unit-cell volume and parameters are continuous both on cooling and under increasing pressure. The anisotropy of the structural strain, however, is found to be different.

A generalized extraction procedure for magnetic interactions using effective Hamiltonians is presented that is applicable to systems with more than two sites featuring local spins ≥ 1. To this end, closed, nonrecursive expressions pertaining to chains of arbitrary equal spins are derived with the graphical method of angular momentum. The method is illustrated by extracting magnetic couplings from ab initio calculations on a [CaMnO] cubane.

We present Re L_{3} edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) results that reveal the presence of the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the A_{2}MgReO_{6} (A=Ca, Sr, Ba) family of 5d^{1} double perovskites. The spin-orbit excitations in these materials show a strongly asymmetric line shape and exhibit substantial temperature dependence, indicating that they are dressed with lattice vibrations.

The study of Na-carbonates stability and their transformations in aqueous carbonate fluid under high P-T conditions is relevant from the point of view of the understanding geochemical processes of the Na-assisted carbon circulation in the Earth's crust and subduction zones. In situ Raman study of Na-bearing carbonate-water-Fe-metal system in diamond anvil cell (DAC) at high P-T conditions revealed that carbonates decompose with abiogenic formation of formates and other organic compounds that differs from behavior of carbonates in dry system. XRD and FTIR methods have been used additionally to determine the phase composition.

The crystal structure of potassium guaninate hydrate, K·CHNO·HO, was studied in the pressure range of 1 atm to 7.3 GPa by single-crystal diffraction using synchrotron radiation and a laboratory X-ray diffraction source. Structural strain was compared to that of the same salt hydrate on cooling, and in 2Na·CHNO·7HO under hydrostatic compression and on cooling.

Periodic apnoea increased inspiratory resistance, and an inability to thermoregulate effectively are characteristic of BOAS, but internationally accepted objective markers of BOAS severity are missing. The objective of this study was to compare the selected blood parameters between non-brachycephalic (NC) and brachycephalic (BC) dogs, exploring the possibility of developing a blood test for BOAS severity grading in the future.

Phase stabilities of end-member representatives ( = Mg, Fe, Co, Ni) have been examined crystallographically using single-crystal X-ray diffraction at 1 bar and temperatures down to 15 K, by means of applying open He cryojet techniques at in-house laboratory instrumentation. All four representative phases show a comparable, highly anisotropic thermal expansion behavior with a remarkable negative thermal expansion along the monoclinic axis and a pronounced anisotropic expansion perpendicular to it.

The variation of charge density of two-electron multicentre bonding (pancake bonding) between semi-quinone radicals with pressure and temperature was studied on a salt of 5,6-di-chloro-2,3-di-cyano-semi-quinone radical anion (DDQ) with 4-cyano--methyl-pyridinium cation (4-CN) using the Transferable Aspheric Atom Model (TAAM) refinement. The pancake-bonded radical dimers are stacked by non-bonding π-interactions. With rising pressure, the covalent character of interactions between radicals increases, and above 2.

Polynuclear transition-metal (PNTM) clusters owe their catalytic activity to numerous energetically low-lying spin states and stable oxidation states. The characterization of their electronic structure represents one of the greatest challenges of modern chemistry. We propose a theoretical framework that enables the resolution of targeted electronic states with ease and apply it to two [Fe(III)S] cubanes.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAccurate ab initio calculations of 3d transition metal monoxide molecules have attracted extensive attention because of their relevance in physical and chemical science as well as theoretical challenges in treating strong electron correlation. Meanwhile, recent years have witnessed the rapid development of the full configuration interaction quantum Monte Carlo (FCIQMC) method to tackle electron correlation. In this study, we carry out FCIQMC simulations to ScO, TiO, and VO molecules and obtain accurate descriptions of 13 low-lying electronic states (ScO Σ, Δ, Π; TiO Δ, Δ, Σ, Π, Φ; VO Σ, Φ, Π, Γ, Δ), including states that have significant multi-configurational character.

The effects of temperature (100-370 K) and pressure (0-6 GPa) on the non-localized two-electron multicentric covalent bonds (`pancake bonding') in closely bound radical dimers were studied using single-crystal X-ray diffraction on a 4-cyano-N-methylpyridinium salt of 5,6-dichloro-2,3-dicyanosemiquinone radical anion (DDQ) as the sample compound. On cooling, the anisotropic structural compression was accompanied by continuous changes in molecular stacking; the discontinuities in the changes in volume and b and c cell parameters suggest that a phase transition occurs between 210 and 240 K. At a pressure of 2.
