Background: it has been suggested that chronic low-grade inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). According to previous studies, it remains unclear which cytokines influence the development of this syndrome and whether their increase is associated with the presence of excess weight/obesity or is an independent factor. The aim of our research was to determine the parameters of chronic inflammation in women with PCOS in comparison with healthy women in the normal weight and the overweight subgroups.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined excess all-cause mortality related to the COVID-19 pandemic among 22 countries up to August 2020, analyzing data from 2015 to 2019 for comparison.
  • Researchers calculated excess mortality by comparing observed deaths in 2020 with baselines from previous years using two different methods.
  • Findings showed that several countries, including Brazil and the USA, had increased mortality rates, while others like Australia saw decreases, indicating that geographical factors and control measures played a role in these variations.

The escalation of conflict in the Middle East coincides with an emerging trend of attacks on healthcare. Protection of health personnel, health services and humanitarian workers is no longer respected. This compromises the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3 - towards health for all, and 16 - towards justice and peace.

The objective of the present study was to optimize genotyping of nuclear DNA contained in human hair. The most efficient procedures for DNA isolation and typing are described taking into consideration the hair growth phase, the epithelial tissue conditions, and the number of nuclei in the near-root ends of the hair. The recommendations for the expert interpretation of the results of the molecular-genetic investigations are proposed.

Background: In 2017, the Centre for Global Health (CGH) at the University of Oslo in collaboration with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad) held a meeting to discuss together with leading figures in disease control, research and development the issue of neglected tropical diseases and emerging/re-emerging infectious diseases. This commentary has taken up this discussion and the conclusions drawn at this meeting to make a case for the opportunity the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provide in highlighting the interconnectedness of factors that are relevant in the successful fight against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and emerging infectious diseases (EIDS).

Main Body: Despite NTDs being endemic and EIDS being epidemic, in order to prevent both disease groups effectively, it is important to appreciate that they share essential health determining factors, namely: neglect, poverty, a lack of access to clean water and sanitation facilities and an absence of or severely limited provision of healthcare as well as in many cases a zoonotic nature.

The objective of the present work was to develop the method for the selection of hairs suitable for the molecular-genetic investigation of nuclear DNA. It was proposed to distinguish between five groups of hair depending on its growth phase, the presence or absence of epithelial tissues at the root terminus. An algorithm was developed for carrying out prognostic screening including the morphological and cytomorphological investigations the results of which can be used to evaluate the possibility for further genotyping.

Introduction: The Aurora kinases play a key role in mitosis and have recently been identified as attractive targets for therapeutic intervention in cancer. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the utility of 3'-[(18)F]fluoro-3'-deoxythymidine (FLT) and 2-deoxy-2-[(18)F]fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) for assessment of tumor response to the multi-targeted Aurora B kinase inhibitor, TAK-901.

Methods: Balb/c nude mice bearing HCT116 colorectal xenografts were treated with up to 30mg/kg TAK 901 or vehicle intravenously twice daily for two days on a weekly cycle.

Unlabelled: The ability of PET to image functional changes in tumors is increasingly being used to evaluate response and predict clinical benefit to conventional and novel cancer therapies. Although the use of (18)F-FDG PET is well established, 3'-deoxy-3'-(18)F-fluorothymidine ((18)F-FLT) PET has potential advantages as a more specific marker of cellular proliferation. c-MET signaling is frequently dysregulated in cancer and is therefore an attractive therapeutic target.

A one-step modification ofimmunoenzyme assay (dot variant) is proposed for the detection of ABH-Lewis antigens in human discharges (saliva, sperm, vaginal discharge). Sensitivity and specificity of the new method is higher than those of other methods currently used in forensic medicine for the detection of antigens in human body discharges; its other advantages over routine techniques include procedural simplicity, high performance, and the possibility of conducting series measurements with minimal labour inputs. Moreover, it provides information not only about group characteristic but also about category of discharge.

A resurgence of diphtheria spread throughout the Russian Federation in the early 1990s; diphtheria had been well controlled, but circulation of toxigenic strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae had persisted since the implementation of universal childhood vaccination in the late 1950s. More than 115,000 cases and 3,000 deaths were reported from 1990 to 1997, and, in contrast to the situation in the prevaccine era, most of the cases and deaths occurred among adults. Contributing factors included the accumulation of susceptible individuals among both adults and children and probably the introduction of new strains of C.

The Newly Independent States (NIS) inherited a common approach to diphtheria control from the Soviet Union and maintained a centralized system of surveillance and control managed by Soviet-trained epidemiologists with a shared professional culture. This system had controlled a diphtheria resurgence in the 1980s. In response to the epidemic of the 1990s, NIS health authorities responded with a set of control measures based on the Soviet-era experience.

Immunization and booster immunization with adsorbed DPT-m vaccine was carried out, respectively, in 45 and 15 children with different severity of the course of an allergic disease, each child receiving simultaneously individually prescribed complex drug therapy. The postvaccinal period took a relatively favorable course. General and allergic reactions and complications observed after the injection of the preparation did not hinder the continuation of the course of immunization, while the appearance of neurological reactions provoked doubts on the expediency of the repeated injection of this preparation.
