Purpose: A high density of infestation in human eyelids and eyelash follicles has been implicated in a variety of ocular surface conditions. However, infestation often goes undiagnosed and untreated, due to an overlap in signs and symptoms with other sources of ocular surface inflammation. We sought to refine the diagnostic technique for outpatient assessment for infestation and determine prevalence of mites in the hair follicles of eyelashes from patients in a standard ophthalmic practice.

Therefore, we investigated whether an antibiotic stewardship intervention would reduce the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics in patients with moderately severe community-acquired pneumonia without compromising their safety.
Methods: In this cross-sectional, stepped-wedge, cluster-randomised, non-inferiority trial (CAP-PACT) done in 12 hospitals in the Netherlands, we enrolled immunocompetent adults (≥18 years) who were admitted to a non-ICU ward and had a working diagnosis of moderately severe community-acquired pneumonia.
Objectives: Although the Surviving Sepsis Campaign bundle recommends obtaining blood cultures within 1 hour of sepsis recognition, adherence is suboptimal in many settings. We, therefore, implemented routine blood culture collection for all nonelective ICU admissions (regardless of infection suspicion) and evaluated its diagnostic yield.
Design: A before-after analysis.
Background: According to the current guidelines of the European Society of Cardiology, patients with left-sided infective endocarditis are treated with intravenous antibiotics for 4-6 weeks, leading to extensive hospital stay and high costs. Recently, the Partial Oral Treatment of Endocarditis (POET) trial suggested that partial oral treatment is effective and safe in selected patients. Here, we investigated if such patients are seen in our daily clinical practice.

Here, we present evidence that organismal death is accompanied by a common and sequential molecular flood of stress-induced events that propagate the senescence phenotype, and this phenotype is preserved in the proteome after death. We demonstrate activation of "death" pathways involvement in diseases of ageing, with biochemical mechanisms mapping onto neurological damage, embryonic development, the inflammatory response, cardiac disease and ultimately cancer with increased significance.

Its aim is to standardize the care of this disease in order to reduce variation, and thereby improve the quality of care. This guideline is a benchmark for all healthcare providers who deal with this devastating disease; it focuses on diagnostics, treatment options and organization of care.

We performed a cross-sectional study with prospective data collection in a tertiary-care ICU. All consecutive surveillance rectal swabs of ICU-patients receiving SDD were included and cultured in an observer-blinded approach using (1) a conventional culture method using non-selective media and (2) SuperPolymyxin™ selective medium.

This most probably results from confounding by indication. Reaching clinical stability is associated with the decision to de-escalate and with survival.

This article shares data on the design of porous titanium implants for intramedullary implantation in the proximal rat tibia. The implant length, diameter and porosity were optimized after testing on cadaveric specimens.

HCAP research has focused mostly on the predictive value for non-susceptibility to broad-spectrum antibiotics and multi-drug resistant pathogens, in settings with moderate to high levels of antibiotic resistance. We investigated whether HCAP criteria predicts non-susceptibility to different empirical strategies, including narrow-spectrum antibiotics in the Dutch setting.

We biofunctionalized the surface of additively manufactured volume-porous titanium implants using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) as a way to eliminate the peri-operative bacterial load and prevent IAI. Chitosan-based (Ch) coatings were incorporated with different concentrations of silver (Ag) nanoparticles or vancomycin.

The first few days after surgery are the most critical time to prevent those infections, preferably through full eradication of the micro-organisms entering the body perioperatively. That is particularly important for patients with a compromised immune system such as orthopedic oncology patients, as they are at higher risk for infection and complications.

The disease is caused by infection with , a bacterium that may be more common than was initially assumed. Most patients present with nonspecific symptoms, and as routine cultivation of the bacterium is not feasible, it is difficult to diagnose this infection.

The distinct epidemiology of original hospital-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (HA-MRSA) and early community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) is largely unexplained. S. aureus carries either five or six rRNA operon copies.

Covering the huge surface area of such porous titanium with nanotubes has been already shown to result in improved bone regeneration performance and implant fixation. In this study, we loaded TiO2 nanotubes with silver antimicrobial agents to equip them with an additional biofunctionality, i.

Objectives: Aspergillus fumigatus is the leading cause of invasive aspergillosis. Adequate treatment is complicated by an increase in azole resistance. Here, the incidence of voriconazole, posaconazole and itraconazole resistance in clinical isolates from high-risk patients from either the haematology ward or the ICU of the University Medical Center Utrecht in the period 2011-13 is analysed.

The data analysis methods to infer copy number variation in model organisms (human, mouse) are established. In principle, the procedures are based on signal ratios between test and reference samples and the order of the probe targets in the genome.

Use of the MALDI-TOF MS for rapid identification of microorganisms from blood culture broths can reduce the turnaround time to identification and may lead to earlier appropriate treatment of bacteremia. During February and April 2010, direct MALDI-TOF MS was routinely performed on all positive blood cultures.

Preventing surgical site infections by screening and decolonising positive patients reduces the number of infections, but does not completely eradicate the risk.

Although there have been reports of invasive disease in humans, MRSA ST398 colonization is much more common in livestock and demonstrates especially high prevalence rates in pigs and calves. The aim of this study was to compare the genome sequence of an ST398 MRSA isolate with other S.

Operons play a key role in regulating expression of diverse genes involved in metabolism and virulence. However, operon structures in pathogenic bacteria have been determined only by in silico approaches that are dependent on factors such as intergenic distances and terminator/promoter sequences.
