Background: Inferior petrosal sinus sampling (IPSS) is a useful technique in the diagnosis of Cushing's disease (CD) when the imaging finding is negative or equivocal. Different authors have reported considerable variability in the ability to determine tumor laterality with IPSS. Here the authors present a retrospective case series of 7 patients who underwent IPSS using a systematic algorithm to improve lateralization accuracy by identifying optimal sampling sites on the basis of individual cavernous sinus drainage patterns in each patient.

Background: Cancer is associated with excess morbidity and mortality from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) following infection by the novel pandemic coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Vaccinations against SARS-CoV-2 have been rapidly developed and proved highly effective in reducing the incidence of severe COVID-19 in clinical trials of healthy populations. However, patients with cancer were excluded from pivotal clinical trials.

Background: Proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) and proximal junction failure are common and costly complications after long-segment adult spinal deformity (ASD) correction. Although much research has focused on the concept of "softening the landing" to prevent proximal junction pathologies, long-segment constructs largely deviate from the force-deformation curve of the physiologic spine. Our novel distributed loading technique for ASD correction is described using multimaterial, long-segment constructs to create a biomechanically sound, yet physiologic, decremental stiffness toward the rostral end.

Neoadjuvant systemic therapy has many potential advantages over up-front surgery, including tumor downstaging, early treatment of micrometastatic disease, and providing an in vivo test of tumor biology. Due to these advantages, neoadjuvant therapy is becoming the standard of care for an increasing number of tumor types. Currently, colon cancer patients are still routinely treated with up-front surgery, and neoadjuvant systemic therapy is not yet standard.

Spontaneous supratentorial intracranial hemorrhage is extremely disabling and is associated with high mortality. Primary treatment for patients with this disease process is maximal medical management with blood pressure control and correction of clotting disorders due to comorbid conditions or medications. Over the past decade, significant strides have been made in understanding the benefits of surgical intervention in the treatment of intracranial hemorrhage through multiple clinical trials.

Cushing disease (CD), or hypercortisolemia secondary to an adrenocorticotropic hormone-secreting (ACTH-secreting) pituitary adenoma, is the most common etiology of noniatrogenic Cushing syndrome. The diagnostic algorithm employed in the patient with suspected CD is complex and includes consideration for inferior petrosal sinus sampling (IPSS). When workup is consistent with CD, extracapsular resection of the ACTH-secreting pituitary adenoma through the endonasal corridor is the preferred operative strategy.

Androgen deprivation therapy has an important role in the medical treatment of advanced and metastatic prostate cancer The treatment of metastatic prostate cancer is influenced by whether the patient’s disease has progressed on androgen deprivation therapy or not. It is considered to be castrate-resistant disease if the cancer has progressed despite adequate suppression of androgens Chemotherapy using docetaxel or cabazitaxel and anti-androgen drugs such as abiraterone and enzalutamide can be used to treat castrate-resistant disease. Radium-223 is an option for patients with bony metastases Metastatic castrate-resistant prostate cancer is now considered a chronic illness as the life expectancy of patients has almost doubled due to the new treatments.

A betanodavirus associated with a massive mortality was isolated from larvae of tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, maintained in fresh water at 30 degrees C. Histopathology revealed vacuolation of the nervous system, suggesting an infection by a betanodavirus. The virus was identified by indirect fluorescent antibody test in the SSN1 cell line and further characterized by sequencing of a PCR product.

Koi herpesvirus (KHV) is the causative agent of a lethal disease in koi and common carp. In the present study, we describe the cloning of the KHV genome as a stable and infectious bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clone that can be used to produce KHV recombinant strains. This goal was achieved by the insertion of a loxP-flanked BAC cassette into the thymidine kinase (TK) locus.

Tick-borne relapsing fever is endemic in the western part of the United States, but it has not been reported east of the Mississippi River. Sporadic cases have been reported in the eastern part of the United States, but travel to the West during the incubation period appeared to provide the source of infection. In the fall of 1975, a case of relapsing fever was diagnosed in Cincinnati in a child who had not traveled outside of Ohio, indicating the presence of Borrelia in this area.

Cell extracts prepared by osmotic lysis of protoplasts were analyzed by sucrose gradient sedimentation. In the absence of detergents, ribosomal precursor particles were found in a gradient fraction which sedimented faster than mature 50S subunits and in two other fractions coincident with mature 50S and 30S ribosomal subunits. Phospholipid, an indicator of membrane, was shown to be associated with only the fastest-sedimenting ribosomal precursor particle fraction.
