A gas-chromatographic mass-spectroscopic technique was used to identify dihydrodigitoxin, a metabolite of digitoxin, in the plasma of healthy volunteers and patients with renal failure. Digitoxin and dihydrodigitoxin were extracted from plasma and derivatized with heptafluorbutyric anhydride.
