Conservation of threatened species can benefit from an evaluation of genes in the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC), whose loci encode proteins that bind pathogens and are often under strong selection to maintain diversity in immune response to diseases. Despite this gene family's importance to disease resistance, little is known about these genes in reptiles including snakes. To address this issue, we assembled and annotated a highly-contiguous genome assembly for the timber rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus), a pit viper which is threatened or endangered in parts of its range, and analyzed this new genome along with three other rattlesnake genomes to characterize snake MHC loci.

Background: Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is a common, acquired, and progressive canine heart disease. The presence of heart murmur and current cardiac biomarkers are useful in MMVD cases but are not sufficiently discriminatory for staging an individual patient.

The easyPACId (easy Promoter Activation and Compound Identification) approach is focused on the targeted activation of natural product biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) encoding non-ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPS), polyketide synthases (PKS), NRPS-PKS hybrids, or other BGC classes. It was applied to entomopathogenic bacteria of the genera Xenorhabdus and Photorhabdus by exchanging the natural promoter of desired BGCs against the L-arabinose inducible PBAD promoter in ∆hfq mutants of the respective strains. The crude (culture) extracts of the cultivated easyPACId mutants are enriched with the single compound or compound class and can be tested directly against various target organisms without further purification of the produced natural products.

Introduction: English springer spaniels have larger, rounder ventricles than most other breeds. How this geometry impacts responses to volume overload remains unknown. We compared left ventricular size between English springer spaniels and two similarly sized sporting breeds (Border collies and Labrador retrievers) in naturally occurring chronic left ventricular volume loading conditions (mitral regurgitation and patent ductus arteriosus [PDA]) to examine whether differences in remodelling responses exist between these breeds.

Aging and regional productivity growth in Germany.

We investigate the effects of aging on regional productivity growth, the mechanisms and the strength of which are not well-understood. We focus on two different manifestations of population aging-workforce aging and an increasing share of retirees-and investigate channels through which aging may impact on regional productivity growth for a panel of German counties 2000-2019. We find that workforce aging is more negatively associated with productivity growth in urban than in nonurban regions.

Our study is the first comprehensive study screening the anti-protozoal activity of supernatants containing secondary metabolites produced by 5 Photorhabdus and 22 Xenorhabdus species against human parasitic protozoa, Acanthamoeba castellanii, Entamoeba histolytica, Trichomonas vaginalis, Leishmania tropica and Trypanosoma cruzi, and the identification of novel bioactive antiprotozoal compounds using the easyPACId approach (easy Promoter Activated Compound Identification) method.

Background: Infective endocarditis (IE) in dogs is associated with severe disease and a high case fatality rate but often presents with nonspecific clinical signs.

Hypothesis/objectives: Serum concentration of cardiac troponin-I (cTnI) is elevated in dogs with IE and can differentiate dogs with IE from dogs with other diseases with similar clinical features. Concentration of serum cTnI is negatively correlated with survival time in dogs with IE.

Firefighting is strenuous work that results in considerable cardiovascular strain. Sudden cardiac events are the leading cause of duty-related death in the fire service. This cross-sectional study examined cardiometabolic measures and prevalence of risk factors in firefighters by age and sex and compare these data to the general population.

Hypertension in the United States Fire Service.

Hypertension is a major risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and cardiac remodeling and is associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac events, the leading cause of duty-related death in the fire service. We assessed systemic blood pressures and prevalence of hypertension among US firefighters by decade of life. Medical records of career firefighters (5063 males and 274 females) from four geographically diverse occupational health clinics were assessed.

Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors by BMI and Age in United States Firefighters.

Objective: This study examined cardiovascular disease risk factors by BMI category in firefighters, the association of BMI and age with risk factor prevalence, and the prevalence of risk factors by BMI category within age groups.

Methods: Cardiovascular measures from the medical evaluations of 4,453 firefighters, performed between 2015 and 2018 at four occupational health clinics in the United States (South-West Cohort, Mid-Atlantic Cohort, South-East Cohort, and Mid-West Cohort), were analyzed cross-sectionally by BMI and age categories.

Results: Among female firefighters with normal weight, 25% had high blood pressure, 8% had low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and 0% had high glucose, whereas the prevalence in female firefighters with obesity was 57%, 45%, and 11%, respectively.
