A 2,5-bis(4-phenylquinazolin-2-yl)thiophene (BQT) probe is designed, synthesized and explored for selective ratiometric fluorescence and visual detection of Fe and as a turn-off fluorescence probe for I anion. BQT is colorless and has blue emission in CHCN solution. BQT selectively complexes with Fe, turns its solution from colorless to greenish yellow and enables the ratiometric sensing of Fe with limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) of 2 × 10 M and 6.

We report the design and synthesis of a novel styrylbenzothiazolium (3) derivative developed as a fluorescent and colorimetric chemodosimeter with high selectivity toward Hg(2+), CN(-) and OH(-) ions. An obvious loss of pink color in the presence of Hg(2+) and CN(-) ions could make it a suitable "naked eye" indicator. We propose a sensing mechanism whereby the benzenoid form is changed to a quinoid form upon Hg(2+) binding in a 1:1 stoichiometric ratio.

Several rhodanine derivatives (9-39) were synthesized for evaluation of their potential as anticancer agents. Villsmeier cyclization to synthesize aza-aromatic aldehydes, rhodanine derivatives preparation and Knoevenagel type of condensation between the rhodanines and aza-aromatic aldehydes are key steps used for the synthesis of 31 compounds. In vitro antiproliferative activity of the synthesized rhodanine derivatives (9-39) was studied on a panel of six human tumor cell lines viz.

A short, high-yielding route to pyranylidene Iminium (Imi) salts using a new pyrylium salt reaction between N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) and acetic anhydride is reported. The Imi salt-sensing behavior toward various anions has been investigated using UV-Visible spectroscopy. The Imi salt demonstrates high selectively for CN(-) when various other anions, such as CN(-), Cl(-), Br(-), I(-), SCN(-), ClO4(-), NO3(-), HSO4(-), PF6(-) and N3(-), are present because it is highly reactive towards nucleophiles.
