Background: Antibiotic resistance is a major public health threat, especially in nursing homes (NHs). Nursing home nurses (NHNs) can play a crucial role in antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), but research on their opinions regarding potential expanded AMS roles is limited.

Objectives: To identify different profiles of NHNs according to their opinions on the potential evolution of their AMS roles and to study facilitators/barriers to implementing new AMS roles and the demographic and professional characteristics associated with these profiles.

Vaccination coverage against hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), and human papillomaviruses (HPV) is insufficient among men who have sex with men (MSM), partly because of their high prevalence of vaccine hesitancy (VH) specific to these vaccines. This study aimed to investigate determinants of specific VH in MSM, focusing on characteristics of their sexual activity, propensity to use prevention tools and medical care, disclosure of sexual orientation to health care professionals (HCPs), and perceived stigmatization. A cross-sectional electronic survey (February - August 2022) collected perceptions of HBV, HAV, and HPV, and of their respective vaccines among 3,730 French MSM and enabled the construction of a specific VH variable.

Article Synopsis
  • Antimicrobial stewardship programs are essential in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) to address the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance, and understanding factors influencing antibiotic use can help shape these programs.
  • A systematic review analyzed 57 studies that focused on various factors affecting antibiotic prescriptions, highlighting that many studies concentrated on resident-level and facility-level influences rather than prescriber-level factors.
  • Key findings included that comorbidities, history of infection, and specific medical conditions significantly increased antibiotic prescriptions among residents, while facility characteristics like staff turnover and availability of on-site coordinating physicians also impacted prescription volumes.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted in Lorraine, France, to assess the impact of a multifaceted antibiotic stewardship intervention on antibiotic prescriptions by general practitioners, focusing on the reduction of systemic and broad-spectrum antibiotics.
  • The intervention included a public commitment charter, patient leaflets, and non-prescription pads, with data analyzed over two periods (before and after the intervention).
  • Results showed a significant reduction in antibiotic prescriptions overall, but no strong evidence that the intervention contributed to this change; however, there was a slight trend toward decreased seasonal variation in antibiotic prescriptions.

In developed countries, vaccinations against hepatitis B (HBV), hepatitis A (HAV), and human papillomavirus (HPV) are often recommended to men who have sex with men (MSM) because of the risky sexual practices in which some engage. Vaccine coverage against these diseases is not optimal in France, probably due in part to vaccine hesitancy (VH). The overall aim of this survey among MSM was to estimate the prevalence of different grades of VH for these vaccines as well as of general VH (toward any vaccine).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate French nursing home nurses' views on their evolving roles in antibiotic stewardship, focusing on facilitators, barriers, and relevant nurse characteristics.
  • A cross-sectional survey was conducted by distributing a 43-item questionnaire to nursing homes, resulting in 923 complete responses from nurses.
  • Findings revealed that a majority of nurses supported expanded responsibilities, including collecting samples and changing antibiotic treatments, though those in public homes with hospital ties and less experience were less inclined to support prescribing antibiotics.

Article Synopsis
  • In France, many teens aren't getting the HPV vaccine, even though the government wants more young people to get vaccinated.
  • The PrevHPV program was created in 2018 to improve this situation by working with different groups and testing new ways to encourage vaccination.
  • They developed three main ideas: educating teens and their parents using online tools and fun activities, training doctors on how to discuss HPV effectively, and making it easier for students to get vaccinated at their schools.

Background: HPV vaccine coverage in France remained lower than in most other high-income countries. Within the diagnostic phase of the national PrevHPV program, we carried out a mixed methods study among school staff to assess their knowledge, beliefs and attitudes regarding HPV, HPV vaccine and vaccination in general, and regarding schools' role in promoting HPV vaccination.

Methods: Middle school nurses, teachers and support staff from four French regions participated between January 2020 and May 2021.

  • Selective reporting of antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST) is aimed at improving antibiotic stewardship by reducing unnecessary prescriptions.
  • The study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of implementing selective reporting for urine cultures among lab professionals and prescribers, uncovering both facilitators and barriers to its national rollout.
  • Results showed that implementing this selective reporting method required approximately 80 hours and €23,000, but it was generally well-received by users, with minimal requests for complete AST reports from general practitioners.

Background: In nursing homes, infections and antibiotic prescriptions are frequent. Nursing home nurses (NHNs) and advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) could promote antibiotic stewardship (ABS). Few studies have explored nurses' knowledge, perceptions and practices towards ABS in nursing homes and none has investigated the potential evolution of their roles.

Background: Diet and physical activity are key components of healthy aging. Current interventions that promote healthy eating and physical activity among the elderly have limitations and evidence of French interventions' effectiveness is lacking. We aim to assess (i) the effectiveness of a combined diet/physical activity intervention (the "ALAPAGE" program) on older peoples' eating behaviors, physical activity and fitness levels, quality of life, and feelings of loneliness; (ii) the intervention's process and (iii) its cost effectiveness.

Background: Cooperation between general practitioners (GPs) and other healthcare professionals appears to help reduce the risk of polypharmacy-related adverse events in patients with multimorbidity.

Objectives: To investigate GPs profiles according to their opinions and attitudes about interprofessional cooperation and to study the association between these profiles and GPs' characteristics.

Methods: Between May and July 2016, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of a panel of French GPs about their management of patients with multimorbidity and polypharmacy, focussing on their opinions on the roles of healthcare professionals and interprofessional cooperation.

Introduction: Vaccination is an effective and safe strategy to prevent Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and related harms. Despite various efforts by French authorities to improve HPV vaccine coverage (VC) these past few years, VC has remained far lower than in most other high-income countries. To improve it, we have coconstructed with stakeholders a school-based and primary care-based multicomponent intervention, and plan to evaluate its effectiveness, efficiency and implementation through a cluster randomised controlled trial (cRCT).

During the last decade, public health research has emphasised the growing public disaffection with vaccination. This contemporary vaccine hesitation (VH) refers to a delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines, as well as agreement despite doubt and reluctance. We investigated VH among French parents of young children, with an emphasis on two key features of VH: trust towards physicians and commitment to vaccination issues.
