A genomic perspective on membrane compartment organization.

Now that whole genome sequences are available for many eukaryotic organisms from yeast to man, we can form broad hypotheses on the basis of the relative expansion of protein families. To investigate the molecular mechanisms responsible for the organization of membrane compartments, we identified members of the SNARE, coat complex, Rab and Sec1 protein families in four eukaryotic genomes. Of these families only the Rab family expanded from the unicellular yeast to the multicellular fly and worm.

The role of salience in conceptual combination.

The present study investigated three factors that affect the interpretation of novel noun-noun (N-N) combinations: simple feature salience, ontological category, and assessed similarity. Participants read and defined a series of novel N-N combinations in which the feature salience of N1 and N2 was manipulated. Participants also rated the combinations for similarity.

High-risk human papillomavirus is sexually transmitted: evidence from a follow-up study of virgins starting sexual activity (intercourse).

Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is generally considered to be sexually transmitted. However, nonsexual spread of the virus has also been suggested. Frankia are Gram-positive, filamentous bacteria capable of fixing atmospheric dinitrogen either in the free-living state or in symbiosis with a variety of woody plants. Only a few Frankia genes have been sequenced and gene expression is not well characterized. To isolate a segment of Frankia DNA that functions as an RNA polymerase promoter, fragments of Frankia strain ArI5 genomic DNA were cloned upstream of a promoterless, Vibrio harveyi luxAB cassette.

Expression of cell volume-regulated kinase h-sgk in pancreatic tissue.

Transcript levels of the human serine/threonine kinase h-sgk have been found to be highest in pancreas. In the present study, localization and regulation of h-sgk transcription in pancreatic tissue were elucidated. As was apparent from radioactive in situ hybridization, most pancreatic acinar cells expressed high levels of h-sgk mRNA.

Inhibition of Jurkat-T-lymphocyte Na+/H+-exchanger by CD95(Fas/Apo-1)-receptor stimulation.

Mitogenic factors are known to stimulate the Na+/H+-exchanger (NHE), leading to cytosolic alkalinization and/or cell swelling. Conversely, a hallmark of apoptosis is cell shrinkage and CD95-induced apoptosis has been reported to be paralleled by cytosolic acidification. Measurement of a Peak in the Cosmic Microwave Background Power Spectrum from the North American Test Flight of Boomerang.

We describe a measurement of the angular power spectrum of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) at scales of 0&fdg;3 to 5 degrees from the North American test flight of the Boomerang experiment. Boomerang is a balloon-borne telescope with a bolometric receiver designed to map CMB anisotropies on a long-duration balloon flight. During a 6 hr test flight of a prototype system in 1997, we mapped more than 200 deg(2) at high Galactic latitudes in two bands centered at 90 and 150 GHz with a resolution of 26&arcmin; and 16&farcm;5 FWHM, respectively.

A flat Universe from high-resolution maps of the cosmic microwave background radiation.

The blackbody radiation left over from the Big Bang has been transformed by the expansion of the Universe into the nearly isotropic 2.73 K cosmic microwave background. Tiny inhomogeneities in the early Universe left their imprint on the microwave background in the form of small anisotropies in its temperature.

Use of immunoassays and other ligand-binding assays in clinical diagnosis has increased dramatically during the last several years. Despite impressive technical advances, "mass production" of these assays in a routine laboratory still presents many difficulties. This review of ligand-binding assay technology highlights some recent developments, emphasizing challenges and possible solutions for cost-effective patient care.

Keratoacanthoma in the differential diagnosis of anal carcinoma: difficult diagnosis, easy therapy. Report of three cases.

Three male patients who had an anal keratoacanthoma are described. Anal keratoacanthoma is a rapidly growing skin tumor that invades the dermis but remains locally and can mimic clinically and histologically a squamous-cell carcinoma.

The dorsocaudal neostriatum of the domestic chick: a structure serving higher associative functions.

The dorsocaudal neostriatal (dNC) complex consists of at least three functionally distinct subregions and is part of an 'imprinting' pathway, which interconnects several forebrain regions that are known to be involved in juvenile learning. Based on its anatomical features, at least one subregion of the dNC complex, the neostriatum dorsocaudale (Ndc) may be considered as the equivalent of the mammalian polysensory association cortices. Several lines of evidence point to a role for this forebrain region in learning and memory formation.

Use of fecal material to associate a suspect with a crime scene: report of two cases.

Fecal matter analyses were applied to two cases: a homicide and a robbery. Scrapings of fecal matter removed from samples of clothing obtained from a homicide suspect were examined for their plant cell and cell fragment content and compared with fecal matter from a rape-homicide victim and scrapings from her clothing. Scrapings were hydrated and examined microscopically.

Modulation of tumor cell proliferation and apoptosis by polyamine depletion in cells of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.

These studies were carried out to examine the capacity of alpha-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) to modulate cell proliferation and apoptosis in cells of squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the head and neck. Exposure of cells to DFMO (5 mM for 48 h) depleted intracellular putrescine and spermidine levels (greater than 5-fold) and inhibited proliferation of the cells without manifestation of cytotoxicity as measured by a clonogenic assay. Exposure of the cells to DFMO did not influence the survival response after exposure to single-dose radiation between 0 and 10 Gy.

Effects of roasting on pyrazine contents and oxidative stability of red pepper seed oil prior to its extraction.

Red pepper seeds were roasted with constant stirring for 6, 9, 10, and 12 min at 210 degrees C, and oils were extracted from the roasted red pepper seeds using an expeller. The iodine values and fatty acid compositions of red pepper seed oils did not change with roasting time. The fatty acid composition of the oil obtained from the red pepper seeds roasted for 6 min was 0.
