Now that whole genome sequences are available for many eukaryotic organisms from yeast to man, we can form broad hypotheses on the basis of the relative expansion of protein families. To investigate the molecular mechanisms responsible for the organization of membrane compartments, we identified members of the SNARE, coat complex, Rab and Sec1 protein families in four eukaryotic genomes. Of these families only the Rab family expanded from the unicellular yeast to the multicellular fly and worm.

Participants read and defined a series of novel N-N combinations in which the feature salience of N1 and N2 was manipulated. Participants also rated the combinations for similarity.

Genital human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is generally considered to be sexually transmitted. However, nonsexual spread of the virus has also been suggested. The goal of this study was to assess: (a) the role of sexual intercourse in the transmission of HPV; (b) the determinants for seroconversion; and (c) the correlation between HPV DNA, abnormal cervical cytology, and serological response to HPV16.

Methods: We carried out a double-blind, randomised, parallel group clinical study, in which patients with mild allergic asthma were given subcutaneous recombinant human IL-12 at increasing weekly injections of 0.1, 0.
Frankia are Gram-positive, filamentous bacteria capable of fixing atmospheric dinitrogen either in the free-living state or in symbiosis with a variety of woody plants. Only a few Frankia genes have been sequenced and gene expression is not well characterized. To isolate a segment of Frankia DNA that functions as an RNA polymerase promoter, fragments of Frankia strain ArI5 genomic DNA were cloned upstream of a promoterless, Vibrio harveyi luxAB cassette.

Transcript levels of the human serine/threonine kinase h-sgk have been found to be highest in pancreas. In the present study, localization and regulation of h-sgk transcription in pancreatic tissue were elucidated. As was apparent from radioactive in situ hybridization, most pancreatic acinar cells expressed high levels of h-sgk mRNA.

Conversely, a hallmark of apoptosis is cell shrinkage and CD95-induced apoptosis has been reported to be paralleled by cytosolic acidification. To assess whether the CD95-receptor regulates NHE activity in Jurkat T-lymphocytes, we performed conventional BCECF fluorescence measurements and SNARF flow cytometric analysis (FACS).

Gonococcal outer membrane proteins of the Opa family induce the opsonin-independent uptake of the bacteria that relies on CEACAM receptors and an active signaling machinery of the phagocyte. Here, we show that CEACAM receptor-mediated phagocytosis of Opa(52)-expressing N.

Within the class of cold dark matter models, we find that the overall fractional energy density of the universe Omega is constrained to be 0.85=Omega=1.

Boomerang is a balloon-borne telescope with a bolometric receiver designed to map CMB anisotropies on a long-duration balloon flight. During a 6 hr test flight of a prototype system in 1997, we mapped more than 200 deg(2) at high Galactic latitudes in two bands centered at 90 and 150 GHz with a resolution of 26&arcmin; and 16&farcm;5 FWHM, respectively.

Tiny inhomogeneities in the early Universe left their imprint on the microwave background in the form of small anisotropies in its temperature.

Despite impressive technical advances, "mass production" of these assays in a routine laboratory still presents many difficulties. This review of ligand-binding assay technology highlights some recent developments, emphasizing challenges and possible solutions for cost-effective patient care.

Based on its anatomical features, at least one subregion of the dNC complex, the neostriatum dorsocaudale (Ndc) may be considered as the equivalent of the mammalian polysensory association cortices. Several lines of evidence point to a role for this forebrain region in learning and memory formation.

Fecal matter analyses were applied to two cases: a homicide and a robbery. Scrapings of fecal matter removed from samples of clothing obtained from a homicide suspect were examined for their plant cell and cell fragment content and compared with fecal matter from a rape-homicide victim and scrapings from her clothing. Scrapings were hydrated and examined microscopically.

Exposure of cells to DFMO (5 mM for 48 h) depleted intracellular putrescine and spermidine levels (greater than 5-fold) and inhibited proliferation of the cells without manifestation of cytotoxicity as measured by a clonogenic assay. Exposure of the cells to DFMO did not influence the survival response after exposure to single-dose radiation between 0 and 10 Gy.
