Downstream processing by biospecific chromatography of maltodextrin phosphorylase from Escherichia coli, overexpressed in E. coli, was substantially improved by a novel approach using ceramic hydroxyapatite. Wild-type and a less active mutant enzyme were purified from crude bacterial cell extracts in one efficient separation step that yielded phosphorylase in purity > 95% in at least 90% recoveries.

Purpose: This study compares the efficacy of a self-help intervention tailored to the individual's stage of motivational readiness for exercise adoption with a standard self-help exercise promotion intervention.

Design: Interventions were delivered at baseline and 1 month; assessments were collected at baseline and 3 months.

Setting: Eleven worksites participating in the Working Healthy Research Trial.

Patients who participate in cardiac rehabilitation programs (CRP) experience significant improvements in quality of life, rehospatilization rates, and mortality associated with cardiovascular disease. The potential efficacy of CRP is limited however, by significant program dropout rates and poor patient adherence to prescribed exercise regimens following rehabilitation. Recently, models of motivational readiness for behavior change, such as the Transtheoretical Model, have been applied to understanding the process of exercise adoption and maintenance.

The primary goal of this article is to review theoretical models utilised in designing physical activity interventions for healthy adults. Physical activity offers numerous benefits for improved physical and psychological health. However, the majority of the population is sedentary and therefore at increased risk for morbidity and mortality.

Objective: To examine the effects that a modified positioning and mobilization routine had no back pain and delayed bleeding in patients who had received heparin and undergone cardiac angiography.

Design: An experimental research design was used. Each patient was assigned randomly to either the control group, which required 6 hours of bed rest after cardiac angiography, or the experimental group.

Urinary schistosomiasis, a disease caused by the blood fluke Schistosoma haematobium, is seen in residents of endemic areas of Africa and Southwest Asia. Two cases are described, one in a twelve year old boy and another in a forty-four year old man. This type of infection is often indolent but can have significant long-term sequelae such as urinary obstruction and bladder cancer.

The effects of dietary mineral levels on caloric intake, nutrient choice, body weight, adipose tissue weight, interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) weight, and thermogenic capacity, and plasma insulin and glucose levels were examined in adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. In Experiments 1 and 2, rats were fed a purified diet with zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), and selenium (Se) added, or the same diet without the addition of these minerals. In Experiment 3, the effects of Zn and Cr were examined separately.

The steroid hormones estrogen (E) and progesterone (P) are known to modify pain sensitivity; however, the relative role of each of these hormones in this process is not well understood. To systematically investigate the effects of E and P on nociception, pain sensitivity was assessed under several hormone conditions. Tailflick (TF) latencies were measured every other day in 10 cycling female rats and 10 female rats during luteal functioning (pseudopregnancy).

Distinguishing patients with uncomplicated ethanol intoxication from intoxicated patients with other causes of mental status depression is a common clinical dilemma. The authors serially tested mental status in a group of ethanol-intoxicated patients to determine the interval over which mental status changes could be attributed to uncomplicated intoxication. Study patients were identified by (1) admission breath ethanol greater than or equal to 100 mg/dL; (2) ethanol-related impairment necessitating further observation or treatment; and (3) not critically ill or exhibiting focal neurologic signs.

Wheat and high-moisture corn (HMC) were fed singly and in three combinations using dry-rolled wheat (DRW) (ratios of 75:25, 50:50, and 25:75, respectively, Trial 1), or singly and in two combinations using steam-rolled wheat (SRW) (ratios of 67:33 and 33:67, respectively, Trial 2) to finishing beef cattle fed a high-concentrate diet. In situ rate of starch digestion (Trial 3) was measured on grains used in Trial 1 (excluding the 25 HMC: 75 DRW mixture) and ground dry corn. In Trial 1 (132 d), gain/feed did not differ (P greater than .

Malformations are found twice as often in twins than in singletons. In the following case, we report on a twin pregnancy with anencephaly and polyhydramnion of the leading twin I, which was first diagnosed after 28 weeks of pregnancy. A fetal sacrococcygeal teratoma may cause hypertrophy of the placenta and fetal hydrops. This is dangerous for the fetus and also for the mother. The maternal risk results from preeclampsia and respiratory insufficiency, associated with elevated beta-HCG.

A monoclonal antibody (mAb) directed against the cytokeratin (CK) polypeptide no. 18 specifically expressed in cells derived from simple epithelia was used to detect epithelial tumor cells in bone marrow aspirates. Of 156 patients with colorectal carcinoma, 42 presented with cells at the time of primary surgery.

Controversy exists concerning the appropriate loading dose of phenytoin in chronic alcoholic patients. Chronic alcoholics are frequently assumed to have low albumin levels secondary to malnutrition and liver disease. Phenytoin is bound to albumin, and therefore the usual loading dose of phenytoin might result in a higher percentage of unbound drug and increased toxicity in these patients.

Monoclonal antibody CK2, recognizing component No. 18, appeared to be the most suitable reagent for the detection of epithelial tumor cells in bone marrow. Its specificity was confirmed in a double-marker staining procedure (combination of APAAP-technique and radioautography).
