Pleural mesothelioma is a rare disease with a dismal prognosis and few therapeutic options. Until recently the median overall survival for a pleural mesothelioma patient was up to 2 years, with few exceptional cases of patients achieving a longer survival. Here, we report the clinical case of a patient whose survival spanned over 10 years.

In the post-operative course of the interventions of lung resection for primary tumor, complications of different nature and severity can arise, recognizing different pathogenetic mechanisms and differing according to the type of resection performed and to the time elapsed after surgery. The low diagnostic accuracy of chest radiography requires a thorough knowledge of the radiologist about all radiographic findings, both normal and pathological, which can be found in the immediate post-operative period (within 30 days after surgery). This article aims to describe the incidence, the clinical features and the radiological aspects of immediate complications following pulmonary resections, with specific reference to those in which the diagnostic imaging provides a fundamental contribution.

Background: Lung ultrasound (LUS) may accurately diagnose pneumothorax. However, there is uncertainty about its usefulness in the quantification of pneumothorax size. To determine the ability of LUS in the semi-quantification of pneumothorax volume, we compared the projection of the lung point (LP) with the pneumothorax volume measured by computerized tomography (CT) and the interpleural distance on chest radiography (CXR).

Tuberculosis has still an important impact on public health because it is an important cause of death, particularly in developing countries. On the other hand recent studies have shown that tuberculosis is again becoming concentrated in big cities of Western Europe, especially among immigrants, drug addicts, poor people, and the homeless, despite progress in reducing national rates of the disease. Diagnostic imaging is challenging for radiologists because signs of tuberculosis may easily mimic other diseases such as neoplasms or sarcoidosis.

Two gold based catalysts supported on ceria prepared by different methods (urea gelation coprecipitation, UGC, and coprecipitation, CP) have been synthesized and tested in the WGS reaction, showing quite different catalytic behaviors. Interestingly, the two catalysts have the same gold loading (3 wt% Au was inserted by deposition-precipitation) and the FTIR spectroscopy of the adsorbed CO revealed the same amount of gold exposed sites. With the aim to elucidate how the preparation method affects the properties of the support, a morphological, structural and textural characterization has been performed by HRTEM, XRD, BET and Raman analyses, as well as FTIR spectroscopy to probe both the Au and the support exposed sites.

The impact of ceria doping by Zn (atomic ratio Zn/(Zn + Ce) = 0.05) on the structural and catalytic properties of Au/CeO(2) catalyst was studied. The ceria modification influenced the catalytic activity toward purification of hydrogen via water-gas shift (WGS) and preferential CO oxidation (PROX) reactions in a different way: it diminished the WGS activity and improved the PROX performance.

Gold-loaded zirconia and sulfated zirconia catalysts were tested in the low-temperature water gas shift reaction. The samples were characterized by N2 adsorption analysis, temperature-programmed reduction, X-ray diffraction, pulse-flow CO chemisorption, FTIR spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. A reference catalyst, Au/TiO2, provided by the World Gold Council was investigated for comparison.

Fourier transform infrared spectra of CO adsorption from 120 K up to room temperature on two gold catalysts supported on different mixed ceria-titania oxides are discussed in comparison with those obtained on Au/TiO(2) and Au/Fe(2)O(3) reference catalysts provided by the World Gold Council. The spectra of adsorbed CO, run on the different samples before preliminary treatment, are shown and compared with those of the untreated catalysts and of the samples reduced either in CO or in hydrogen. Big differences have been found between the ceria-titania supported samples and the reference ones: unusual absorption bands, irreversible to outgassing, have been detected after CO interaction on the untreated and oxidized ceria containing samples.

To assess the diagnostic and medicolegal contribution of Computed Tomography (CT) in patients with craniocerebral, maxillofacial, neck and spine gunshot wounds, we submitted to CT 106 patients with gunshot wounds examined over a 7-year period (February, 1988 to December, 1994). Twenty-four of them had craniocerebral injuries (23%), 9 maxillofacial (8%), 8 neck (8%) and 10 vertebral (9%) injuries. Emergency CT demonstrated the mechanism of the injury, the bullet path and site, the site of bone and/or metallic fragments, and damage extent.

The knowledge of wound ballistics and of wounding mechanisms is mandatory for the radiologist to interpret the CT findings of gunshot wounds. The severity of a bullet wound depends on the characteristics of the tissue it goes through, i.e.

The authors reviewed CT scans and supine chest X-ray of 47 patients affected by severe thoracic trauma, examined in 1985-86. The sensibility of the two methodologies in the assessment of pneumothorax was compared. CT detected 25 pneumothorax, whereas supine chest X-ray allowed a diagnosis in 18 cases only.

The Authors propose a new approach to the treatment and prognostic evaluation of post-traumatic supratentorial acute epidural haematoma (PSAEH). As far as this lesion is concerned a group of patients with a favourable prognosis and without indications for a surgical treatment may be identified. To this purpose, the clinical picture, characterized by a slight symptomatology undergoing a regression phase (stupor, headache, etc.
