Introduction: There is converging evidence supporting hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), such as schizotypal personality disorder (SPD), first-episode schizophrenia (FESZ) and chronic schizophrenia (CHSZ). Such an aberrant HPA activity might have volumetric consequences on the pituitary gland. However, previous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies assessing pituitary volume (PV) in SSD are conflicting.

Recent studies of adults with BD demonstrate abnormalities in the functional connectivity between the amygdala and anterior paralimbic regions suggesting an important role for the connections between these regions in the development of the disorder. This study tests the hypothesis that these functional connectivity abnormalities are present in adolescents with BD.

Aims: To investigate for geometric abnormalities in these callosal fibers in schizophrenia patients by using a novel Diffusion-Tensor Imaging (DTI) metric of fiber geometry named Shape-Normalized Dispersion (SHD).
Methods: DTIs (3T, 51 gradient directions, 1.
Aim: To assess pathological and radiological prognostic factors for cancers detected by screening within a multi-centre RCT trial of mammographic screening of younger women.
Method: The survival of 232 women with screen detected invasive cancer was ascertained. Data on invasive cancer size, histological grade, nodal status, vascular invasion, mammographic spiculation, comedo calcification and mammographic background were assessed.

Brain imaging studies have long supported that schizophrenia is a disorder of the brain, involving many discrete and widely spread regions. Generally, studies have shown decreases in cortical gray matter (GM) volume. Here, we selectively review recent papers studying GM volume changes in schizophrenia subjects, both first-episode (FE) and chronic, in an attempt to quantify and better understand differences between healthy and patient groups.

DLPFC primarily involves the superior frontal gyrus and middle frontal gyrus (MFG). The latter, however is not a single neuroanatomical entity but instead is comprised of rostral (anterior, middle, and posterior) and caudal regions.

Methods: Fifteen breast cancer patients received simultaneous peri-areolar (intradermal) and peri-tumoral (intraparenchymal) injections of human polyclonal immunoglobulin (HIG) labeled with (99m)Tc and (111)In 2 to 4 h before axillary lymph node clearance surgery. Resected nodes (range 5-20; median 16) were individually counted for (99m)Tc and (111)In in a well-counter and ranked according to activity content (echelon).
Aims: Identification of sentinel lymph nodes (SLN) may depend on the tissue plane of tracer injection. To explore this, we developed a dual-isotope technique to compare the lymphatic drainage basins accessed by intradermal and parenchymal injections.
Methods: Fifteen breast cancer patients had simultaneous parenchymal and intradermal injections of (99m)Tc-labelled human immunoglobulin G (HIG) and (111)In-HIG, respectively, 2-4h before axillary lymph node clearance surgery.
A rare case of the solid variant of pure intracystic papillary carcinoma (IPC) in a 72-year-old male is described with a review of the literature. Currently, there is no clear consensus as to how this condition is best managed. Literature review demonstrates that this is an excellent prognosis tumour.

Patients And Methods: A retrospective analysis was made of all radial scars diagnosed on surgical histology over an 8-year period. Comparison was made between the results of different preoperative needle biopsy techniques and surgical histology findings.
Aim: The aim of this study was to analyse the radiographic findings of the screening mammograms of women with interval cancer who participated in a multi-centre, randomized, controlled trial of mammographic screening in women from age 40-48 years.
Materials And Methods: The screening and diagnostic mammograms of 208 women with interval cancers were reviewed. Abnormalities were classified as malignant, subtle and non-specific.
Background: The efficacy of screening by mammography has been shown in randomised controlled trials in women aged 50 years and older, but is less clear in younger women. A meta-analysis of all previous trials showed a 15% mortality reduction in invited women aged 40-49 years at study entry, but this finding could be due in part to screening of women after age 50 years. The Age trial was designed to study the effect on mortality of inviting women for annual mammography from age 40 years.

Here we report characteristic patterns of expression of 12 members of 3 classes of chromatin modifier genes in 6 different cancer types: histone acetyltransferases (HATs)- EP300, CREBBP, and PCAF; histone deacetylases (HDACs)- HDAC1, HDAC2, HDAC4, HDAC5, HDAC7A, and SIRT1; and histone methyltransferases (HMTs)- SUV39H1and SUV39H2. Expression of each gene in 225 samples (135 primary tumours, 47 cancer cell lines, and 43 normal tissues) was analysedby QRT-PCR, normalized with 8 housekeeping genes, and given as a ratio by comparison with a universal reference RNA.

The study was approved by the local ethics research committee, and informed consent was obtained from all patients. The size and shape of tumor regions on terahertz images were compared with those identified at histopathologic examination of the imaged section.

Aims/methods: The major objectives were to monitor and improve the consistency of diagnoses made by pathologists and the quality of prognostic information in pathology reports. The scheme is based on a twice yearly circulation of 12 cases to over 600 registered participants.
Background: The original role of the National Health Service breast screening programme (pathology) external quality assessment (EQA) scheme was educational; it aimed to raise standards, reinforce use of common terminology, and assess the consistency of pathology reporting of breast disease in the UK.
Aims/methods: To examine the performance (scores) of pathologists participating in the scheme in recent years. The scheme has evolved to help identify poor performers, reliant upon setting an acceptable cutpoint.
Purpose: Axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) as part of surgical treatment for patients with breast cancer is associated with significant morbidity. Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) is a newly developed method of staging the axilla and has the potential to avoid an ALND in lymph node-negative patients, thereby minimizing morbidity. The aim of this study was to investigate physical and psychological morbidity after SLNB in the treatment of early breast cancer in a randomized controlled trial.

Methods: Twenty patients with impalpable primary invasive breast carcinoma underwent an injection of 99mTc-nanocolloid mixed with radiographic contrast medium Iohexol into the centre of the lesion under ultrasound or stereotactic guidance pre-operatively. No guidewire localisation was performed.
The objective of this study was to determine the influence of annual mammography on pathology features of breast cancers in an invited population. We conducted a randomized trial of 53,890 invited and 106,971 control United Kingdom women who were recruited only from those aged 40 years, with central review of cancer histology. We compare the invasive cancer distribution for the categories of size, histological type, grade, and node status in subgroups of the invited population with that of controls.

It is therefore a candidate tumor suppressor gene in humans and is the homologue (ROBO1) of the Drosophila axonal guidance receptor gene, Roundabout. We have shown previously that mice with a targeted homozygous deletion within the Dutt1/Robo1 gene generally die at birth due to incomplete lung development: survivors die within the first year of life with epithelial bronchial hyperplasia as a common feature.
