In the present study, the microalga Arthrospira platensis DHR 20 was cultivated in vertical flat-plate photobioreactors (FPBRs) to bioremediate anaerobically digested cattle wastewater (ACWW) and used as a growth substrate. The final objective was to evaluate the properties of the oil extracted from this biomass to determine its potential for biodiesel production. The process was divided into five phases, varying the volume of the applied substrate: 1 L (Phase I), 5 L (Phase II), 10 L (Phase III), 15 L (Phase IV), and 20 L (Phase V).

Chronic diseases are the leading cause of death and disability in the United States, and much of this burden can be attributed to lifestyle and behavioral risk factors. Lifestyle medicine is an approach to preventing and treating lifestyle-related chronic disease using evidence-based lifestyle modification as a primary modality. NYC Health + Hospitals, the largest municipal public health care system in the United States, is a national pioneer in incorporating lifestyle medicine systemwide.

Introduction: Interventions emphasizing healthful lifestyle behaviors are proliferating in traditional health care settings, yet there is a paucity of published clinical outcomes, outside of pay-out-of-pocket or employee health programs.

Methods: We assessed weight, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), blood pressure, and cholesterol for 173 patients of the Plant-Based Lifestyle Medicine Program piloted in a New York City safety-net hospital. We used Wilcoxon signed-rank tests to assess changes in means, from baseline to six-months, for the full sample and within baseline diagnoses (i.

Patients with non-ischemic systolic heart failure (HF) have increased risk of sudden cardiovascular death (SCD). The initiation and substrate for ventricular arrhythmias remains poorly understood. Our purpose was to describe the relationship between cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) and Holter recorded ventricular arrhythmic activity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how periodic repolarization dynamics (PRD) can identify nonischemic cardiomyopathy patients who might benefit from getting a cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) implanted as a preventive measure against sudden cardiac events.
  • A post hoc analysis of the DANISH trial included patients with severe heart function issues (LVEF ≤35% and high NT-proBNP levels) to see how baseline PRD, measured using 24-hour Holter monitors, related to their mortality.
  • Results showed that higher PRD was linked to higher mortality in patients not receiving ICDs, while there was no significant link in those with ICDs, suggesting that PRD could help target patients who would benefit most from ICD therapy

Psychosocial stressors are prevalent and linked to worse health outcomes, but are less frequently addressed than physically apparent medical conditions at primary care visits. Through a community-academic partnership between an art museum and a federally qualified health center, we developed an innovative museum-based intervention and evaluated its feasibility and acceptability among diverse, underserved patients and its perceived effects on psychosocial stressors. Guided by experiential learning and constructivist approaches, the intervention consisted of a single, three-hour session that incorporated group discussions and interactive components, including art-viewing, sketching, and object-handling.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers analyzed data from 850 patients with severe heart failure, monitoring their heart for 24 hours to find indicators like non-sustained ventricular tachycardia (NSVT) and the burden of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs).
  • * Results showed that while both NSVT and high PVC burden were linked to higher overall mortality and cardiovascular death, they did not help in predicting which patients would benefit from ICD implantation.

Article Synopsis
  • Atrial fibrillation (AF) and excessive supraventricular ectopic activity (ESVEA) in patients with nonischemic heart failure (HF) were linked to higher mortality rates, including all-cause and cardiovascular deaths.
  • In a study of 850 patients, 22% had AF and 10% had ESVEA, with both conditions leading to significantly increased risks of death over nearly five years of follow-up.
  • The implantation of a prophylactic implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) did not show any improvement in outcomes for patients with AF or ESVEA, indicating that management strategies may need re-evaluation.

Soft tissue complications following hip arthroplasty may occur either in cases of total hip arthroplasty or in hip resurfacing, a technique that has become popular in cases involving young patients. Both orthopedic and radiological literatures are now calling attention to these symptomatic periprosthetic soft tissue masses called inflammatory pseudotumors or aseptic lymphocytic vasculites-associated lesions. Pseudotumors are associated with pain, instability, neuropathy, and premature loosening of prosthetic components, frequently requiring early and difficult reoperation.

Neosporosis is considered a major cause of abortion among cattle worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies in dairy cattle and correlate them with possible risk factors on 63 small farms (family farms) in the municipality of Ji-Paraná, the main milk-producing region of the state of Rondônia, northern Brazil. For this purpose, 621 serum samples were collected from cows and were evaluated by means of the indirect fluorescence antibody test (IFAT).

The effects of several natural antioxidants (copaiba oil, buriti oil, cocoa butter, tucuman butter, oregano and white thyme) were assessed in the enzymatic synthesis of monoglycerides (MAG) from the glycerolysis of babassu oil. The reactions were catalyzed by Burkholderia cepacia lipase immobilized on SiO2-PVA and the assays carried out in batch and continuous runs. Results were compared with those attained in the control reactions (without any strategy to avoid oxidation), and the best approach was tested in a continuous packed-bed reactor.

Objective: The role of sympathetic blocks in pain therapy is examined in the light of changing concepts of pain pathophysiology. A critical review of the literature also sought to develop an evidence-based analysis of outcome studies to provide recommendations for appropriate applications of sympathetic blocks, together with ideas for further clinically based research.

Methods: A focus on the pathophysiology of neuropathic and inflammatory pain disorders was used to help redefine what contribution, if any, was provided by the sympathetic system, to chronic pain states.

Background And Objectives: The origin and the presence of negative pressure in the epidural space as well as the relationship of the extent of epidural anesthesia to epidural pressure has long been a subject of controversy. To further elucidate epidural pressure and its time course, the pressure at the needle tip was continuously measured as it traversed the interspinous ligament and the ligamentum flavum.

Methods: In a group of 22 patients, fluid was infused under gravity, and in a second group of 25 patients, boluses of fluid were administered at controlled infusion rates and under gravity.

We present a revised taxonomic system for disorders previously called reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) and causalgia. The system resulted from a special consensus conference that was convened on this topic and is based upon the patient's history, presenting symptoms, and findings at the time of diagnosis. The disorders are grouped under the umbrella term CRPS: complex regional pain syndrome.

The use of diagnostic injection techniques in the evaluation of low back pain disorders is a clinical judgment skill, based on applied anatomy, pharmacology of the agents employed, and the neurophysiology of pain. In earlier years, the focus was primarily on the anatomic basis of pain, with sometimes oversimplistic interpretations of the results obtained. Although an anatomic correlation of a subjective complaint remains the same diagnostic objective today, a clearer understanding of pain concepts has also given these injection techniques a greater sensitivity but narrower spectrum in their application.
