Purpose Of Review: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) management is complex and requires daily personal involvement and self-management skills to maintain optimal glycemic levels and improve health outcomes. Engagement in self-management behaviors in the early years of diagnosis can be challenging due to prevailing psychosocial factors present during this critical transition period, coupled with a lack of information, support, and skills. Technology-based diabetes self-management interventions can improve access to needed education and support, and their effectiveness in the general T2D population is well documented.

Variation in leaf venation network architecture may reflect trade-offs among multiple functions including efficiency, resilience, support, cost, and resistance to drought and herbivory. However, our knowledge about architecture-function trade-offs is mostly based on studies examining a small number of functional axes, so we still lack a more integrative picture of multidimensional trade-offs. Here, we measured architecture and functional traits on 122 ferns and angiosperms species to describe how trade-offs vary across phylogenetic groups and vein spatial scales (small, medium, and large vein width) and determine whether architecture traits at each scale have independent or integrated effects on each function.

The traditional free-range system of livestock rearing contributes to the socioeconomic well-being of most rural households in Ghana. The traditional management system exposes livestock to a high disease incidence, but healthcare support for animal production is limited. Ethnoveterinary practice is an integral part of livestock treatment, particularly in rural communities where veterinary services are poor.

Article Synopsis
  • The study involved a case series using Yucatan miniature pigs to model spinal cord contusion injuries, comparing findings to human spinal cord injury cases.
  • Researchers aimed to assess MRI measures of spinal cord damage severity and the preservation of key neural tissue, linking these to behavioral outcomes in varying levels of injury severity.
  • Results showed that pigs with more severe injuries had worse locomotor and bladder function outcomes, paralleling findings in human cases, indicating that this pig model can inform understanding of spinal cord injuries and MRI evaluations.

Xylem conduits have lignified walls to resist crushing pressures. The thicker the double-wall (T) relative to its diameter (D), the greater the implosion safety. Having safer conduits may incur higher costs and reduced flow, while having less resistant xylem may lead to catastrophic collapse under drought.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) increases risk of traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) and is associated with depression, anxiety, and chronic pain. Given that these neuropsychiatric morbidities are frequently observed in SCI patients, the effects of pre-injury AUD on risk of depression, anxiety, or chronic pain were analyzed using an insurance claim database. Of 10,591 traumatic SCI patients, 507 had AUD-associated claims in a 12-month period before injury.
