Treatment and Outcomes of Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer in Elderly Patients.

Background And Aims: Although pancreatic cancers are common in older age-groups, the prognosis remains poor due to limited studies on treatment approaches and outcomes in a given population. We aimed to examine treatment patterns and their outcomes in older patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer in a real-world context.

Materials And Methods: We conducted a retrospective study including 167 patients with metastatic pancreatic cancer (aged ≥70 years and male/female: 78/89) between January 2010 and July 2015.

Arsenic trioxide (ATO; AsO) has anti-cancer effects in various solid tumors as well as hematological malignancy. Valproic acid (VPA), which is known to be a histone deacetylase inhibitor, has also anti-cancer properties in several cancer cells including lung cancer cells. Combined treatment of ATO and VPA (ATO/VPA) could synergistically enhance anti-cancer effects and reduce ATO toxicity ATO.

Pyrogallol (PG) induces apoptosis in lung cancer cells via the overproduction of O and affects mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) in these cells. The aim of the present study was to elucidate the effect of PG and/or MAPK inhibitors on human pulmonary fibroblast (HPF) cell viability in relation to reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glutathione (GSH). Treatment with 50 or 100 µM PG inhibited the viability of HPF cells, and induced cell death and the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP; ΔΨ).

Suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA) as a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor has anti-cancer effect. Here, we evaluated the effect of SAHA on HDAC activity and cell growth in many normal lung and cancer cells. We observed that the HDAC activities of lung cancer cells were higher than that of normal lung cells.

Auranofin (Au), an inhibitor of thioredoxin reductase, is a known anti‑cancer drug. In the present study, the anti‑growth effect of Au on HeLa cervical cancer cells was examined in association with levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glutathione (GSH). Au inhibited the growth of HeLa cells with an IC50 of ~2 µM at 24 h.

Clinical characteristics and treatment outcome of acute myeloid leukemia in elderly patients in Korea: a retrospective analysis.

Background: The clinical characteristics of elderly patients with AML differ from those of younger patients, resulting in poorer survival and treatment outcomes. We analyzed retrospectively the clinical data of AML patients 65 years old and above to describe patients' characteristics and treatment patterns, and to define meaningful prognostic factors of survival in the Korean population.

Objective: Posture-induced radial neuropathy, known as Saturday night palsy, occurs because of compression of the radial nerve. The clinical symptoms of radial neuropathy are similar to stroke or a herniated cervical disk, which makes it difficult to diagnose and sometimes leads to inappropriate evaluations. The purpose of our study was to establish the clinical characteristics and diagnostic assessment of compressive radial neuropathy.

Pulsed radiofrequency neuromodulation for the treatment of saphenous neuralgia.

Characterization of a gene encoding cellulase from uncultured soil bacteria.

To detect cellulases encoded by uncultured microorganisms, we constructed metagenomic libraries from Korean soil DNAs. Screenings of the libraries revealed a clone pCM2 that uses carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) as a sole carbon source.
