Epidemiology of invasive disease in adults in England, 2013-2017.

Extraintestinal pathogenic (ExPEC) causes invasive disease (IED), including bacteraemia and (uro)sepsis, resulting in a high disease burden, especially among older adults. This study describes the epidemiology of IED in England (2013-2017) by combining laboratory surveillance and clinical data. A total of 191 612 IED cases were identified.

CIROZ is dispensable in ancestral vertebrates but essential for left-right patterning in humans.

Four genes-DAND5, PKD1L1, MMP21, and CIROP-form a genetic module that has specifically evolved in vertebrate species that harbor motile cilia in their left-right organizer (LRO). We find here that CIROZ (previously known as C1orf127) is also specifically expressed in the LRO of mice, frogs, and fish, where it encodes a protein with a signal peptide followed by 3 zona pellucida N domains, consistent with extracellular localization. We report 16 individuals from 10 families with bi-allelic CIROZ inactivation variants, which cause heterotaxy with congenital heart defects.

An interdisciplinary perspective of the built-environment microbiome.

The built environment provides an excellent setting for interdisciplinary research on the dynamics of microbial communities. The system is simplified compared to many natural settings, and to some extent the entire environment can be manipulated, from architectural design to materials use, air flow, human traffic, and capacity to disrupt microbial communities through cleaning. Here, we provide an overview of the ecology of the microbiome in the built environment.

Associations between subclinical thyroid dysfunction and cardiovascular risk factors according to age and sex.

Context: Subclinical thyroid dysfunction (ScTD) comprising subclinical hypothyroidism (SHypo) and subclinical hyperthyroidism (SHyper) has been associated with increased risk for cardiovascular events.

Objective: To assess associations between ScTD and cardiovascular risk factors (cvRFs) according to age and sex.

Design And Setting: Pooled individual participant data analysis of large prospective cohort studies from the Thyroid Studies Collaboration.

Keeping it in the family: using protein family templates to rescue low confidence AlphaFold2 models.

Motivation: High confidence structure prediction models have become available for nearly all protein sequences. More than 200 million AlphaFold2 models are now publicly available. We observe that there can be significant variability in the prediction confidence as judged by plDDT scores across a protein family.

Incidence and survival of rare adult solid cancers in Europe (EUROCARE-6): A population-based study.

Background: Rare cancers correspond to approximately 200 clinical entities, which can be grouped into 12 families. Updated data are available for childhood and haematological cancers, ie, for only two of the 12 families of rare cancer. We provide incidence and survival for the remaining ten families of rare adult solid cancers (RAC), across 29 EU Member States and over time.

Ageing limits stemness and tumorigenesis by reprogramming iron homeostasis.

Ageing is associated with a decline in the number and fitness of adult stem cells. Ageing-associated loss of stemness is posited to suppress tumorigenesis, but this hypothesis has not been tested in vivo. Here we use physiologically aged autochthonous genetically engineered mouse models and primary cells to demonstrate that ageing suppresses lung cancer initiation and progression by degrading the stemness of the alveolar cell of origin.

The role of manganese in CoMnO catalysts for selective long-chain hydrocarbon production via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.

Cobalt is an efficient catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) of hydrocarbons from syngas (CO + H) with enhanced selectivity for long-chain hydrocarbons when promoted by Manganese. However, the molecular scale origin of the enhancement remains unclear. Implementation of a Pharmacist-Driven Protocol to Improve Screening and Treatment of Iron Deficiency in Hospitalized Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease.

While intravenous (IV) iron repletion is an effective tool to treat anemia and improve outcomes in chronic kidney disease (CKD), guideline laboratory definitions of iron deficiency differ, resulting in variability in screening and repletion strategies. This study sought to describe current practices surrounding identification and treatment of iron deficiency in CKD and then implement a pharmacist-led protocol to optimize care at a tertiary medical center. This single center, retrospective, pre- and post-protocol implementation study of adults with CKD admitted to the inpatient setting first analyzed historic practices for iron deficiency screening and treatment, followed by deployment of a pharmacist-driven protocol for iron deficiency screening and treatment.

Incidence and prognosis of cutaneous melanoma in European adolescents and young adults (AYAs): EUROCARE-6 retrospective cohort results.

Background: Cutaneous melanoma (CM) is rare in adolescents and young adults (AYA, 15-39 years at cancer diagnosis) and studies on CM in AYAs are scarce. Our aim is to update CM incidence and survival in European AYAs and to compare incidence and survival both with other age groups and over time.

Methods: We used the EUROCARE-6 database (108 cancer registries; 29 EU countries), calculating incidence rates (IR) per 100,000 individuals/year in the European population (years of diagnosis: 2006-2013), 5-year relative survival (RS), and 5-year RS conditional to surviving the first year after diagnosis, for the follow-up period 2010-2014 (cases diagnosed in 2006-2013).

Symptom prevalence in patients with advanced heart failure and its association with quality of life and activities of daily living.

Background: Quality of life (QOL) and functional status are two key outcomes for patients with advanced heart failure (HF). We examined the association of eleven symptoms with QOL and functional status impairment in patients with advanced HF.

Methods And Results: This was a retrospective analysis of baseline data from a multi-center, cluster-randomized controlled trial (NCT01459744) which enrolled patients with an implanted cardioverter-defibrillator and advanced HF at high-risk for mortality.

MOBIDB in 2025: integrating ensemble properties and function annotations for intrinsically disordered proteins.

The MobiDB database (URL: https://mobidb.org/) aims to provide structural and functional information about intrinsic protein disorder, aggregating annotations from the literature, experimental data, and predictions for all known protein sequences. Here, we describe the improvements made to our resource to capture more information, simplify access to the aggregated data, and increase documentation of all MobiDB features.

Valence-band hybridization in sulphides.

However, it is difficult to spectroscopically detect and evaluate hybridization beyond just general fingerprint signatures. Here, the valence-band hybridization of metal d-derived bands (short: "metal d bands") in selected metal sulphides is studied with a combined spectroscopic and theoretical approach to derive deeper insights into the fundamental nature of such compounds.

Description of self-efficacy for managing symptoms and emotions in a large rheumatology clinic population.

Objectives: Self-efficacy is the inner confidence in one's ability to manage specific goals or tasks. The purpose of this study was to describe self-efficacy for people living with various rheumatologic disease and explore its associations with health-related quality of life (HRQoL).

Methods: This study was a retrospective, cross-sectional analysis of patients in a large rheumatology division who had office visits and completed questionnaires from May 2022 to January 2023.

Phase 1 trial of intraperitoneal paclitaxel in patients with gastric adenocarcinoma and carcinomatosis or positive cytology.

Background: The purpose of this phase 1 trial was to evaluate the safety and toxicity of repeated normothermic intraperitoneal paclitaxel (PTX) for patients with gastric cancer metastatic to the peritoneum.

Methods: A Bayesian optimal interval design was used to prospectively identify the safety and tolerability of escalating doses of intraperitoneal paclitaxel at weekly treatments for 3 weeks, followed by a 1-week break, and then three additional treatments. The primary objective was to define the maximum tolerated dose.
