Passive leg movement (PLM)-induced hyperemia is used to assess the function of the vascular endothelium. This study sought to determine the impact of movement speed and range of motion (ROM) on the hyperemic response to PLM and determine if the currently recommended protocol of moving the leg through a 90° ROM at 180°/sec provides a peak hyperemic response to PLM. 11 healthy adults underwent multiple bouts of PLM, in which either movement speed (60-240°/sec) or ROM (30-120° knee flexion) were varied.

We present here the complete genomes of 18 phages that infect Paenibacillus larvae, the causative agent of American foulbrood in honeybees. The phages were isolated between 2014 and 2016 as part of an undergraduate phage discovery course at Brigham Young University. The phages were isolated primarily from bee debris and lysogens.

The use of patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) in trauma is limited. The aim of this pilot study is to evaluate qualitative responses and factors affecting planned return to work following significant trauma, for which there is currently a poor evidence base. National ethical approval was obtained for routine prospective PROMs data collection, including EQ-5D, between Sept 2013 and March 2015 for trauma patients admitted to the Sussex Major Trauma Centre (n=92).

The incidence and mortality rate of cutaneous melanoma continue to increase throughout the world, making the study of melanoma biology an important area of current research. While recent breakthroughs in transgenic mouse technology have led to promising mouse skin models of melanoma, there is presently no technique available for quantitatively studying subsurface melanoma progression, in vivo. We demonstrate the first application of an imaging method called ultrasound backscatter microscopy (UBM) for imaging early murine melanomas with spatial resolution of 30 microns axial and 60 microns lateral.

1 The interaction between phenylephrine and debrisoquine was studied using normal and hypertensive human volunteers, measuring blood pressure, pulse rate and pupil diameter. Single doses of phenylephrine were given before, during and after a short course of debrisoquine treatment. 2 The circulatory effects of phenylephrine are potentiated by debrisoquine; in a few subjects this potentiation was marked and a potential hazard.
