Background: Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV) is an alternative option to treat pain after an osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF). Controversy exists as to whether PV increases the risk of new OVCFs or prevents further vertebral height loss in treated levels. We assessed both during 1-year follow-up in patients with acute OVCF randomised to PV or a sham procedure.

When treating HIV-infected patients with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), potential drug-drug interactions with antiretroviral agents have to be taken into account. We investigated the two-way pharmacokinetic drug-drug interaction and tolerability of concomitant administration of the SSRI citalopram and the HIV-1 integrase inhibitor raltegravir in healthy volunteers.

Physiological changes during pregnancy can reduce antiretroviral drug exposure. We studied the effect of pregnancy on the pharmacokinetics of raltegravir and its safety and efficacy in HIV-infected pregnant women.

We investigated the influence of a frequently used statin, atorvastatin, on the pharmacokinetics of the HIV-integrase inhibitor raltegravir and vice versa.
Methods: Open-label, crossover 3-period phase I trial in 24 healthy volunteers.
Introduction: Nevirapine (NVP) induces cytochrome P450 3A4 by which rilpivirine (RPV) is metabolized. Switching NVP to RPV could result in decreased RPV exposure with subsequent virological failure and dyslipidemia because NVP is regarded as the least dyslipidemic, non-nucleoside, reverse transcriptase inhibitor. This trial evaluated the efficacy, pharmacokinetics, safety and cardiovascular risks of switching NVP to RPV.

One hundred thirty-nine nonswitchers remained on nevirapine as controls. Week 12 HIV-1 RNA was <50 copies per milliliter in 92.

The aim of the present report was to examine if the effects would be sustained after six month follow-up.
Methods: In the DiaMind trial, 139 outpatients with diabetes (type-I or type-II) and a lowered level of emotional well-being were randomized into MBCT (n=70) or a waiting list with treatment as usual (TAU: n=69).

Objectives: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can limit the solubility of concomitant drugs, which can lead to decreased absorption and exposure. Reduced efficacy can be a consequence and in the case of an antimicrobial agent this may contribute to development of resistance. Patients chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus can be treated with a boceprevir-containing regimen and it is relevant to know if interactions between PPIs and boceprevir exist.

The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of group therapy with Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), relative to usual care, for patients with diabetes with regard to reducing emotional distress and improving health-related quality of life and glycemic control.
Research Design And Methods: In the present randomized controlled trial, 139 outpatients with diabetes (type 1 or type 2) and low levels of emotional well-being were randomized to MBCT (n = 70) or a waiting list group (n = 69).
Background: Patients coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are likely to use both HIV and HCV treatment. Drug-drug interactions have been demonstrated between boceprevir, an HCV protease inhibitor, and frequently prescribed antiretroviral drugs, such as efavirenz and boosted HIV protease inhibitors. Concomitant administration of boceprevir with these drugs should be avoided.

Medicinal herbs may cause clinically relevant drug interactions with antiretroviral agents. Ginkgo biloba extract is a popular herbal product among HIV-infected patients because of its positive effects on cognitive function. Raltegravir, an HIV integrase inhibitor, is increasingly being used as part of combined antiretroviral therapy.

Despite one guideline, all FLSs differed in the performance of patient selection and prevalence of clinical risk factors (CRFs) indicating the need for more concrete and standardised guidelines.
Introduction: The aim of the study was to evaluate the implementation of case findings according to guidelines for osteoporosis in fracture patients presenting at FLSs in the Netherlands.
Background: Percutaneous vertebroplasty is increasingly used for treatment of pain in patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures, but the efficacy, cost-effectiveness, and safety of the procedure remain uncertain. We aimed to clarify whether vertebroplasty has additional value compared with optimum pain treatment in patients with acute vertebral fractures.
Methods: Patients were recruited to this open-label prospective randomised trial from the radiology departments of six hospitals in the Netherlands and Belgium.
Background And Purpose: PV is increasingly used as treatment for osteoporotic VCFs. However, controversy exists as to whether PV increases the risk for new VCFs during follow-up. The purpose of our research was to assess the incidence of new VCFs in patients with acute VCFs randomized to PV and conservative therapy.

A sensitive and specific method using ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) was developed for the determination of levetiracetam (LEV) in plasma of neonates. A plasma aliquot of 50 microl was deproteinized by addition of 500 microl methanol which contained 5 microg/ml UCB 17025 as an internal standard. After centrifugation, 50 microl of supernatant was diluted with 1000 microl of 0.

Method: Multivariate logistic regression was performed in an existing database in order to study the association between falls history and CYP2D6*4, CYP3A5*3, ABCB1 3435T polymorphisms in patients using fall-risk-increasing CYP2D6, CYP3A5 and P-glycoprotein (gene product of ABCB1) substrates.
Results: No statistically significant increased fall risk was found in 'poor metabolizers' compared to 'extensive' and 'intermediate metabolizers' using fall-risk-increasing CYP2D6 substrates (Odds ratio (OR) = 2.
The analgesic effect of ketamine is primarily based on the antagonism of the N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor. Activation of NMDA receptors may play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of chronic pain. Little formal research has been performed on the efficacy and safety of ketamine in chronic pain, especially concerning long-term oral administration.

Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PV), a minimally invasive technique, is gaining popularity as a new treatment option. Many prospective and retrospective studies have reported on the effectiveness and safety of PV, but no large randomized controlled trial (RCT) has been published.

Its objectives were to perform easy and complete assessment of female and male patients aged 50 years and over, initially treated for a low-energy trauma fracture, and to evaluate its effectiveness for early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.
Methods: All eligible patients were selected from the digital X-ray system of the Emergency Department.
Objective: To assess and evaluate the short-term results of radio-iodine treatment using an extended dosimetric method.
Methods: Sixty-five patients with Graves disease (GD) and 32 patients with toxic multinodular goitre (TMG) received a pre-therapeutic dosage of Na123I. The overall indicative radiation dose (Dind) and the indicative dosage (Aind) was calculated for the individual patient using the dosimetric results found.
We examined the relationship between long-term dietary intake of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and the relative content of these fatty acids in adipose tissue triglycerides from 53 obese Dutch subjects--19 men and 34 women--with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). Adipose tissue fatty acid profiles analyzed in three samples taken from each subject at 1-y intervals showed no within-subject differences for EPA and DHA. Dietary intake was estimated from 12 3-d dietary records made over 2 y at 2-mo intervals.
