Long paleoecological records are critical for understanding evolutionary responses to environmental forcing and unparalleled tools for elucidating the mechanisms that lead to the development of regions of high biodiversity. We use a 1.2-My record from Lake Malawi, a textbook example of biological diversification, to document how climate and tectonics have driven ecosystem and evolutionary dynamics.

The transport of moisture in the tropics is a critical process for the global energy budget and on geologic timescales, has markedly influenced continental landscapes, migratory pathways, and biological evolution. Here we present a continuous, first-of-its-kind 1.3-My record of continental hydroclimate and lake-level variability derived from drill core data from Lake Malawi, East Africa (9-15° S).

Chiral helix-based metamaterials can potentially serve as compact and broadband circular polarizers. We have recently shown that the physics of structures composed of multiple intertwined helices, so called N-helices with N being an integer multiple of 4, is distinct from that of structures made of single circular helices (N = 1). In particular, undesired circular polarization conversion is strictly eliminated for N = 4 helices arranged on a square lattice.

Silicon wafers are commonly etched in potassium hydroxide solutions to form highly symmetric surface structures. These arise when slow-etching {111} atomic planes are exposed on standard low-index surfaces. However, the ability of nonstandard high-index wafers to provide more complex structures by tilting the {111} planes has not been fully appreciated.

We synthesize African paleoclimate from 150 to 30 ka (thousand years ago) using 85 diverse datasets at a regional scale, testing for coherence with North Atlantic glacial/interglacial phases and northern and southern hemisphere insolation cycles. Two major determinants of circum-African climate variability over this time period are supported by principal components analysis: North Atlantic sea surface temperature (SST) variations and local insolation maxima. North Atlantic SSTs correlated with the variability found in most circum-African SST records, whereas the variability of the majority of terrestrial temperature and precipitation records is explained by local insolation maxima, particularly at times when solar radiation was intense and highly variable (e.

As the potential for bioterrorism has appeared to increase, the need for simple systems for identifying potential inhibitors of the binding of such biological agents to cell membranes has increased. In this work, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) was used to monitor binding of ricin, a ribosome-inactivating protein, to the plasma membranes of NIH 3T3 cells. Once conditions were established, efficacy of the system for monitoring effectiveness of compounds at inhibiting ricin binding was ascertained by determining the IC(50) values for asialofetuin (ASF) and for bovine serum albumin derivatized with an average of 34 lactosyl moieties (BSA-Lac(34)).

Oxidative stress is a key feature during progression of chronic neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. In aging humans and animals, voluntary exercise lowers oxidative stress reactions. Additionally, recent work in our lab demonstrated that cognitive and physical stimulation (termed environmental enrichment) counteracts amyloid beta pathology, neurovascular dysfunction and behavioral symptoms in mice with Alzheimer-like disease.

Ricin, a ribosome-inactivating protein from the plant Ricinus communis, is a heterodimeric protein. The A chain is a N-glycosidase and the B chain (RTB) is a lectin with two carbohydrate binding sites. RTB has been shown to bind asialofetuin with much greater affinity than it does galactose, supporting the hypothesis that it may exhibit multivalency.
