Understanding and incorporating evidence-based veterinary medicine (EBVM) into clinical practice and research continues to pose a challenge for our profession despite over 2 decades of increasing awareness of this concept. Reasons for this include a lack of understanding of its importance to the practice of medicine, veterinary literature that often fails to adhere to evidence-based standards, inadequate attention to teaching EBVM at the university level, and the inherent reluctance of clinicians to alter historical practice styles. For many practitioners, EBVM continues to be an abstract concept they believe requires advanced training in statistics and epidemiology resulting in them relying on less robust sources for clinical guidance.

Article Synopsis
  • Ferric citrate (FC) is a phosphate binder for dialysis patients with chronic kidney disease, and this study examined its effects on the use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) and IV iron.
  • In a study involving over 200 dialysis patients, those treated with FC showed a significant reduction in monthly ESA doses compared to those on standard care, while showing non-significant changes in IV iron doses.
  • Patients receiving FC also saw improvements in hemoglobin and other blood measures, and experienced fewer serious adverse events compared to those receiving standard therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Lower baseline apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) indicates higher cortical fibrosis, which correlates with increased serum inflammation markers IL-6 and C-reactive protein (CRP).
  • No correlation was found between baseline cortical relaxation rate (R2*) and inflammation markers, suggesting that R2* may not reflect systemic inflammation.
  • The study evaluated 127 CKD participants, revealing that despite changes in kidney fMRI biomarkers, there was no significant association with changes in inflammatory markers over time.

Key Points: Tenapanor, a first-in-class local inhibitor of sodium/hydrogen exchanger isoform 3, acts as a phosphate absorption inhibitor by decreasing paracellular phosphate absorption. Tenapanor alone or with phosphate binders achieved ≤ 5.5 mg/dl over 10 weeks in 34%–38% of patients taking phosphate binders at baseline.

We sought to describe the prevalence of and motivation for cannabis use and whether legalization of cannabis impacts the frequency and perceived risks and benefits of use in people living with HIV (PWH). The study was based on two HIV clinics located in Cleveland, Ohio, and Aurora, Colorado. Participants responded to a 45-question survey, and responses were summarized in aggregate and stratified by the frequency of cannabis use and site.

Toothed whales utilize specialized nasal structures such as the lipid-rich melon to produce sound and propagate it into the aquatic environment. Very little nasal morphology of mesoplodont beaked whales has been described in the literature, and the anatomy of the melon and associated musculature of Gervais' beaked whale (Mesoplodon europaeus) remains undescribed. Heads of three (n = 3) Gervais' beaked whales were examined in detail via dissection as well as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Background: Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes neural disconnection and persistent neurological deficits, so axon sprouting and plasticity might promote recovery. Soluble Nogo-Receptor-Fc decoy (AXER-204) blocks inhibitors of axon growth and promotes recovery of motor function after SCI in animals. This first-in-human and randomised trial sought to determine primarily the safety and pharmacokinetics of AXER-204 in individuals with chronic SCI, and secondarily its effect on recovery.

Background: Widespread use of at-home COVID-19 tests hampers determination of community COVID-19 incidence. Using nationwide data available through the US National Wastewater Surveillance System, we examined the performance of two wastewater metrics in predicting high case and hospitalizations rates both before and after widespread use of at-home tests.

Methods: We performed area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis (AUC) for two wastewater metrics-viral concentration relative to the peak of January 2022 ("wastewater percentile") and 15-day percent change in SARS-CoV-2 ("percent change").

Background: A panel of IgA-based serologic assays might aid in the diagnosis of chronic enteropathy (CE) in dogs, a syndrome encompassing conditions such as food-responsive enteropathy, immunosuppressant-responsive enteropathy, and inflammatory bowel disease (also referred to as chronic inflammatory enteropathy). However, it is unclear whether these biomarkers discriminate between CE and other types of primary intestinal disorders.

Objectives: To evaluate a diagnostic panel that measures serum concentrations of IgA directed against OmpC (ACA), canine calprotectin (ACNA), and gliadin-derived peptides (AGA) in dogs with well-characterized intestinal diseases.

Many patients with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) show disturbances in their sleep/wake cycles, and they may be particularly vulnerable to the impact of circadian disruptors. We have previously shown that a 2-weeks exposure to dim light at night (DLaN) disrupts diurnal rhythms, increases repetitive behaviors and reduces social interactions in contactin-associated protein-like 2 knock out (Cntnap2 KO) mice. The deleterious effects of DLaN may be mediated by intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs) expressing the photopigment melanopsin, which is maximally sensitive to blue light (480 nm).

Disturbances in sleep/wake cycles are common among patients with neurodegenerative diseases including Huntington's disease (HD) and represent an appealing target for chrono-nutrition-based interventions. In the present work, we sought to determine whether a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet would ameliorate the symptoms and delay disease progression in the BACHD mouse model of HD. Adult WT and BACHD male mice were fed a normal or a ketogenic diet (KD) for 3 months.

Purpose: Sustained minimal residual disease (MRD) negativity is associated with long-term survival in multiple myeloma. The gut microbiome is affected by diet, and in turn can modulate host immunity, for example through production of short-chain fatty acids including butyrate. We hypothesized that dietary factors affect the microbiome (abundance of butyrate-producing bacteria or stool butyrate concentration) and may be associated with multiple myeloma outcomes.
