Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the level of target achievement for key modifiable cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors (dyslipidaemia, arterial hypertension, hyperglycaemia, smoking, and physical inactivity) in Belgium.

Methods And Results: This non-systematic review of Belgian data from four recent studies assessed the control of CVD risk factors in clinical settings: the European Study on Cardiovascular Risk Prevention and Management in Usual Daily Practice (EURIKA), the Optimal Type 2 Diabetes Management Including Benchmarking and Standard Treatment Study (OPTIMISE), the European Action on Secondary and Primary Prevention by Intervention to Reduce Events Survey (EUROASPIRE III), and data from a general practice-based morbidity registration network (INTEGO). For each study, target achievement levels were evaluated using the guidelines that were applicable at the time of the study.

Poorer neuropsychological function is associated with increased medical burden (MB) and the use of more anticholinergic medications. However, the interaction between MB and anticholinergic cognitive burden (AB) on neuropsychological performance is unknown. In a sample of 290 elderly primary care patients, those with a greater level of AB demonstrated poorer Total Index performance on the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS).

Objectives/hypothesis: The objectives of this study were to examine the presence of β-2 transferrin (β2TRNSF) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) contaminated in vitro by various bacteria and explore the mechanism (passive or active) responsible for β2TRNSF elimination. Early diagnosis of CSF leakage may change treatment decisions and minimize the risk of meningitis and encephalitis. β2TRNSF is a protein present exclusively in CSF.

Background: The International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG) recommends universal screening with a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) using stricter criteria for gestational diabetes (GDM). This may lead to important increases in the prevalence of GDM and associated costs, whereas the gain in health is unclear. The goal of 'The Belgian Diabetes in Pregnancy Study' (BEDIP-N) is to evaluate the best screening strategy for pregestational diabetes in early pregnancy and GDM in an ethnically diverse western European population.

Introduction: In premenopausal women with breast cancer, standard adjuvant endocrine therapy has been 5 years of tamoxifen. This study sought to investigate the safety and feasibility of treating patients who remain premenopausal after adjuvant tamoxifen with gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRH-a) concurrent with an aromatase inhibitor, mimicking the strategy that has proven effective in postmenopausal patients.

Patients And Methods: This phase II single-arm clinical trial aimed to enroll 50 premenopausal women who had completed > 4.

Background: Epidemiological features of infective endocarditis have changed during the last decades because of increases in the prevalence of health care exposure and of Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infection. Consequently, the role of surgery is evolving. We aim to provide a contemporary profile of epidemiological, microbiological, and clinical features of infective endocarditis in a tertiary medical center, and identify predictors of mortality.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the main cause of premature mortality in Europe. The burden of CVD could be reduced by controlling the major modifiable CVD risk factors (dyslipidaemia, arterial hypertension, hyperglycaemia, smoking, and physical inactivity) through lifestyle and dietary changes and appropriate drug therapies. The objective of this article is to assess the level of target achievement for key modifiable CVD risk factors in Belgium by referring to the data from four recent studies.

Psychostimulants containing methylphenidate (MPH) are increasingly being used both on and off-label to enhance learning and memory. Still, almost no studies have investigated MPH's ability to specifically improve spatial or long-term memory. Here we examined the effect of training with 1 or 10mg/kg MPH on hidden platform learning in the Morris water maze.

Aim: Enterobacter cloacae complex bacteria are of both clinical and environmental importance. Phenotypic methods are unable to distinguish between some of the species in this complex, which often renders their identification incomplete. The goal of this study was to develop molecular assays to identify Enterobacter hormaechei and Ent.

Contrast-sparing devices have been slowly adopted into routine patient care. Randomized trial evidence of automated contrast injectors (ACIs) has not been analyzed to evaluate the true reduction in contrast volume during coronary angiography and intervention. It has been thought that reducing the amount of contrast exposure will result in a simultaneous reduction in the risk of contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN).

Destruction and formation of dioxin-like PCBs in full scale waste incinerators is studied by analysing input waste streams and boiler and fly ash of a grate furnace incinerator (GFI) incinerating MSW, of a Fluidised Bed Combustor (FBC) incinerating a mix of 50% sludge, 25% refuse derived fuel (RDF) and 25% automotive shredder residue (ASR) and of a rotary kiln incinerator (RKI) incinerating hazardous waste. The dioxin-like PCB fingerprints of the waste inputs show that PCB oils Aroclor 1242 and Aroclor 1254 late are the major dioxin-like PCB contamination source of sludge, RDF and ASR. The dioxin-like PCB fingerprints of the waste inputs are clearly different from the fingerprints of the outputs, i.

The role of antibiotic exposure in the evolution and emergence of resistance is challenging to assess. We used carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) phenotypes to assess possible factors that are associated with the occurrence and prognosis of such a phenotype and to examine the possible contribution of antibiotic exposure to the evolution of antimicrobial resistance. We conducted a nested case-control study.
