Background: Use of permanent hair dyes causes unintended oxidative damage during the short time frame of the dyeing process that leads to perceivable changes in the feel, manageability and appearance of hair. Moreover, after hair has been dyed, regular exposure to the sun as a key environmental stressor continues to stimulate additional oxidative damage and to induce newly developed hair colours to fade prematurely or undergo changes in colour quality.

Objective: To document the utility of acetyl zingerone methyl ether (MAZ) as a newly designed haircare ingredient to afford extra protection against oxidative damage and safeguard the integrity of hair colour.

Phenoxazine is a commonly used molecular building block, for example in optoelectronic applications and pharmaceuticals. Conjugated molecules with multiple radical centers such as the iconic Chichibabin diradicaloid hold promise as building blocks in materials for quantum sensing and quantum information processing. However, it is a considerable challenge to design simple analogues of the Chichibabin hydrocarbon that are chemically inert, exhibit high diradical character and emit light at a distinct wavelength that may offer an optical readout of the spin state in functional ensembles. Here we describe the serendipitous discovery of the stable TTM-TTM diradicaloid, which exhibits high diradical character, a striking sky-blue color and near-infrared (NIR) emission (in solution).

Understanding and mastering quantum electrodynamics phenomena is essential to the development of quantum nanophotonics applications. The use of diamond colour centres such as the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centre is increasingly enabling quantum sensing and computing applications. Novel concepts like cavity coupling and readout, laser-threshold magnetometry and multi-pass geometries allow significantly improved sensitivity and performance via increased signals and strong light fields. Enabling material properties for these techniques and their further improvements are low optical material losses via optical absorption of signal light and low birefringence.

Derivatives of the stable, luminescent tris-2,4,6-trichlorophenylmethyl (TTM) radical exhibit unique doublet spin properties that are of interest for applications in optoelectronics, spintronics, and energy storage. However, poor reactivity of the chloride-moieties limits the yield of functionalization and thus the accessible variety of high performance luminescent radicals. Conservation treatment of degraded archaeological osseous materials is still an open challenge, since no specific conservation protocol is currently available for restorers or museum curators. This work aims to test the efficiency of two original consolidant solutions in consolidating archaeological material. By means of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate T(1)(-1), we follow the spin dynamics as a function of the applied magnetic field in two gapped quasi-one-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets: the anisotropic spin-chain system NiCl(2)-4SC(NH(2))(2) and the spin-ladder system (C(5)H(12)N)(2)CuBr(4). In both systems, spin excitations are confirmed to evolve from magnons in the gapped state to spinons in the gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid state. In between, T(1)(-1) exhibits a pronounced, continuous variation, which is shown to scale in accordance with quantum criticality.

Noise filtering is an essential part for measurement of quantum phenomena at extremely low temperatures. Here, we present the design of a filter which can be installed in space constrained cryogenic environment containing a large number of signal carrying lines. Our filters have a -3 db point of 65 kHz and their performance at GHz frequencies is comparable to the best available RF filters.

We report a case of hypertrophic olivary degeneration due to cerebellar surgery for a low-grade tumor. A 27-year-old female presented with right-sided paresthesias and intermittent leg paresis following a right cerebellar resection of a tumor 2 weeks prior. One month later, her symptoms remained stable while her neurological examination demonstrated slight right hemi-body hypoesthesia and subtle appendicular ataxia in her right upper extremity.

Objectives: A retrospective review of primary chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) was performed to determine if CRT might be considered as an alternative to radiotherapy and/or definitive surgery.

Methods: All treatment-naive patients with ACC of the head and neck who were treated with definitive primary chemoradiotherapy using carboplatinum and paclitaxel at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in 2000 through 2004 were identified. Recent neuroimaging studies have revealed that acupuncture stimulation modulates human central nervous system including cerebral limbic/paralimbic and subcortical structures. Due to the wide and intricate connections with cerebrum, we hypothesized that anatomically specific areas in human cerebellum are also modulated by acupuncture stimulation beyond classical involvement of cerebellum in motor coordination. Functional MRI (fMRI) was used to investigate neural substrates responding to the acupuncture stimulation of Pericardium 6 (PC6, Neiguan), an acupoint relevant for the management of nausea including vestibular-related motion sickness.

Painful stump neuromas in the postamputation patient are difficult to diagnose and treat. We report a case in which magnetic resonance allowed precise preoperative diagnosis and localization of such a lesion. Magnetic resonance, with its ability for long axis imaging in the extremity, is ideally suited for the workup of stump neuromas.
