The hypersonic phonon propagation in large-area two-dimensional colloidal crystals is probed by spontaneous micro Brillouin light scattering. The dispersion relation of thermally populated Lamb waves reveals multiband filtering due to three distinct types of acoustic band gaps. We find Bragg gaps accompanied by two types of hybridization gaps in both sub- and superwavelength regimes resulting from contact-based resonances and nanoparticle eigenmodes, respectively.

A typical monolayer fabrication strategy involves the self-assembly of colloidal building blocks at liquid interfaces, which are subsequently deposited on a solid substrate. Even though this process is well established, the resulting order of the particles within the colloidal monolayer differs between batches of colloidal particles and can even change with the age of the dispersion.

More complex assembly structures, including particle chains and phases with square symmetry, were theoretically predicted almost two decades ago for spherical particles interacting via a soft repulsive shoulder. Here, we demonstrate that such complex assembly phases can be experimentally realized with spherical colloidal particles assembled at the air/water interface in the presence of molecular amphiphiles.

We present a novel methodology to achieve superior order in 'anodic' alumina with large interpore distances by a convenient one-step anodization process. The use of transparent insulators renders such anodic layers applicable as templates for nanostructured photovoltaic or photoelectrochemical devices.

Bacterial toxins cause local tissue damage and necrosis, as well as blunt immune system responses. A self-propagating cycle of bacterial invasion, toxin release and tissue destruction can continue until substantial amounts of tissue become necrotic.

Encrustation of urinary catheters is due to formation of crystalline biofilms by urease-producing microorganisms such as Proteus mirabilis. An in vitro catheter biofilm model (CBM) was used to evaluate current methods for maintaining urinary catheter patency.

Therefore we produced a nanoparticular pH sensor composed of the fluorescent pH-sensitive dual wavelength dye carboxy seminaphthorhodafluor-1 (carboxy SNARF-1) coupled to the surface of amino-functionalized polystyrene NPs (SNARF-1-NP). By applying a calibration fit function to confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) images, local pH values were determined.

Therefore we first coat a micropillar array with a mono- or bilayer of polymeric particles, and merge the particles together to shield the top faces while hydrophobizing the walls. After removing the polymer film, the top faces of the micropillar arrays can be selectively chemically functionalised with hydrophilic groups.

After assembling hard (polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), silica) or soft core-shell gold-hydrogel composite (Au@PNiPAAm) colloids at the air-water interface, butylcyanoacrylate is introduced to the interface via the gas phase. Upon contact with water, an anionic polymerization reaction of the monomer is initiated and a film of poly(butylcyanoacrylate) (PBCA) is generated, entrapping the colloids at their equilibrium position at the interface.

As a proof of principle for the measurement in liquids, we investigated the work function change of an Au substrate upon hexadecanethiol chemisorption. To relate the measured contact potential difference (CPD) during the chemisorption of alkanethiols to a change of the work function, the influence of physisorbed decane must be taken into account.

Evaluation of capsaicin's carcinogenic potential has produced variable results in in vitro and in vivo genotoxicity and carcinogenicity assays. The capsaicin tested in older studies was often from pepper plant extracts and included other capsaicinoids and diverse impurities.

Safety and modest efficacy of low-concentration capsaicin formulations, which require repeated daily self-administration, are supported by meta-analyses of numerous studies. To investigate potential food-drug or drug-drug interactions, capsaicin was evaluated in vitro against seven human drug-metabolizing cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes. This study evaluated the pharmacodynamic effects of a single 60-minute application of NGX-4010, a high-concentration (8% w/w) capsaicin patch, on both thighs of healthy volunteers. Epidermal nerve fiber (ENF) density and quantitative sensory testing (QST) using thermal, tactile, and sharp mechanical-pain (pinprick) stimuli were evaluated 1, 12 and 24 weeks after capsaicin exposure.

On the basis of the ability of capsaicin to activate the transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 receptor (TRPV1) expressed in nociceptive sensory neurons, topical and injectable high-concentration formulations are being developed as potential treatments for various pain syndromes. As much of the published literature on capsaicin is based on pepper extracts, which are typically a mixture of capsaicin and other capsaicinoids (including norhydrocapsaicin, dihydrocapsaicin, homocapsaicin and homodihydrocapsaicin), the purpose of this investigation was to study the in vitro metabolism of pure capsaicin. Human environmental and dietary exposure to trans-capsaicin--the pungent ingredient in chili peppers--is ubiquitous. Moreover, based on the highly selective agonism of trans-capsaicin for TRPV1 receptors, drug products containing high concentrations of trans-capsaicin are under development as analgesics. For instance, a high-concentration (8% w/w) pure trans-capsaicin dermal patch (designated NGX-4010) is in advanced clinical evaluation for the management of neuropathic pain of peripheral origin.
