[Carcinoma of the penis. Our experience with 22 cases].

The penis carcinoma is a neoplasia representing 0.7% of all male neoplasias, with an annual incidence between 1 and 2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants/year. The present study compiles the authors' experience in treating 22 patients presenting this neoplasia in the period between 1977-90.

[Morphologic substrates of the ventricular route of secretion and transport of substances in the tubero-infundibular region of the hypothalamus. Ultrastructural study].

Ultrastructural studies of the ependyma of the tuberoinfundibular region of the rat hypothalamus have revealed the existence of intraventricular axonal endings and of cytoplasmic blebs and bulbs that project from the apical surface of the ependymal cells to the ventricular lumen. All these structures account for the processes of ependymal apocrine secretion and the neuroventriculocrinia, and hence the release of biologically active substances into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). These substances contained in the CSF must act on the nervous nuclei of the tuberoinfundibular region, such as the arcuate nucleus, which is very important in the neuroendocrine regulation of the anterior pituitary gland.

[Uncoordinated urination syndrome].

Fourteen male and female patients aged 8 to 21 (mean 12.57 years) underwent clinical and urodynamic evaluation. These patients had different lower urinary tract symptoms, and flow changes and increased perineal muscle activity during voiding were demonstrated urodynamically.

Mutations in the aphA-2 gene of transposon Tn5 mapping within the regions highly conserved in aminoglycoside-phosphotransferases strongly reduce aminoglycoside resistance.

Aminoglycoside-phosphotransferases contain several conserved amino acid sequence motifs. Using hydroxylamine we have obtained five independent missense mutations within the aphA-2 gene of transposon Tn5. Four of the mutations dramatically reduced antibiotic resistance.

Myelinated Herring bodies in the median eminence of the cat.

An electron-microscopic study was carried out on the median eminence of cats during post-natal development. From the moment of birth (observations performed 12 hours later) Herring bodies were seen in the fibrillary layer of the median eminence. At 45 days after birth, myelinated nerve fibres could be observed, some of them containing neurosecretory granules.

The incidence of PGX in our setting is low (0.67%). Middle-aged women comprise most of our cases.

Atrial natriuretic factor increases cyclic GMP and cyclic AMP levels in a directly photosensitive pineal organ.

Atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) stimulates accumulation of cyclic GMP in a photosensitive organ, as evidenced for the first time in cultured trout pineals. Stimulation was rapid (within a few min), dose-dependent, and stronger in organs cultured in darkness than in those cultured under light. After 30 min in the dark, (i) cyclic AMP levels were slightly increased at 10(-7) mole/l of ANF, (ii) cyclic GMP and cyclic AMP increased dramatically after inhibition of the phosphodiesterases by isobutylmethylxanthine (IBMX), (iii) ANF and IBMX effects were more than additive on cyclic GMP, (iv) pertussis toxin decreased the cyclic GMP response to ANF.

Bleomycin-kanamycin resistance as a marker of the presence of transposon Tn5 in clinical strains of Escherichia coli.

The aminoglycoside modifying enzyme aminoglycoside 3'-phosphotransferase II (APH(3')II) is encoded for on transposon Tn5 by the aphA gene, in the same operon as the ble gene determining bleomycin resistance. To document this linkage 82 kanamycin-resistant Escherichia coli strains of clinical origin were studied; all 18 isolates presenting bleomycin-kanamycin resistance were shown by an enzymatic assay to produce APH(3')II, and the presence of Tn5 was demonstrated by gene hybridization. Similarly, bleomycin-kanamycin resistance was shown to be linked to APH(3')II production in Salmonella spp.

Lethal cardiac toxicity after cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil chemotherapy. Report of a case with necropsy study.

This article presents a patient affected with epidermoid carcinoma of the soft palate who developed a dilated myocardiopathy with aortic embolism and fatal left cardiac failure after treatment with cisplatin (100 mg/m2, day 1) and 5-fluorouracil (1 g/m2/day i.v. days 2-6).

A clinical isolate of transposon Tn5 expressing streptomycin resistance in Escherichia coli.

The central region of transposon Tn5 carries three antibiotic resistance markers: neo, ble, and str. The str gene codes for a phosphotransferase that inactivates streptomycin. This activity is phenotypically expressed in several gram-negative bacteria but not in Escherichia coli.

In vitro chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea: case reports.

For many years the chloroquine-resistant problem in Africa was circumscribed to East Africa, but in the last two years it has been spreading progressively to the West. We report here the two first cases of chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria imported into Spain from Equatorial Guinea. Both cases show a parasitological grade III resistance in a W.

Acute rheumatic fever and poststreptococcal glomerulonephritis in an open population: comparative studies of epidemiology and bacteriology.

We conducted epidemiologic and bacteriologic studies of 104 cases of acute rheumatic fever (ARF) and 84 cases of poststreptococcal acute glomerulonephritis (AGN) occurring in the southeast health district of Santiago, Chile, between March 1978, and February 1982. The AGN cases were both postpharyngeal and postpyodermal in origin. Despite the fact that ARF and AGN were occurring in the same neighborhoods and among families of equivalent size and socioeconomic status, the pharyngeal isolation rates of group A streptococci were significantly lower among patients with ARF and their household contacts than among patients with AGN and their contacts.

Arginine-vasopressin immunoreactive material in the gastrointestinal tract.

Like many other neuropeptides, vasopressin is not confined to the hypothalamic neurohypophysial system. Furthermore, vasopressin was found to be a potent vasoconstrictor in the rat jejunum, reducing myenteric artery flow. These associations were the basis of this investigation on the presence of vasopressin in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract by both RIA and immunohistochemistry.

Are all recurrences of "pure" Sydenham chorea true recurrences of acute rheumatic fever?

We are conducting prospective studies of patients in Santiago, Chile, who have had an attack of rheumatic fever and are receiving continuous secondary prophylaxis with monthly injections of benzathine penicillin G. Throat cultures are obtained just prior to injection each month, and serum antistreptococcal antibody titers (antistreptolysin O and antideoxyribonuclease B) are performed at least every 3 months. During the course of these studies we have observed 17 recurrences of "pure" chorea in 10 patients (six girls).
