Collagen VI-related dystrophies (COL6-RDs) are a group of rare congenital neuromuscular dystrophies that represent a continuum of overlapping clinical phenotypes that go from the milder Bethlem myopathy (BM) to the severe Ullrich congenital muscular dystrophy, for which there is no effective treatment. Mutations in one of the three Collagen VI genes alter the incorporation of this protein into the extracellular matrix (ECM), affecting the assembly and the structural integrity of the whole fibrillar network. Clinical hallmarks of COL6-RDs are secondary to the ECM disruption and include muscle weakness, proximal joint contractures, and distal hyperlaxity.

Fifty-six Rubia de El Molar ovine breed lamb carcasses were divided into 8 groups ( = 7 per group) according to weight (10, 15, 20 and 25 kg) and sex (male and female) to study the effect of these factors on meat sensory characteristics, assessed by means of a trained panel. Heavier animals showed a more-springy meat and also received lower scores for pleasantness. Assessors gave lower scores for flavour and pleasantness in female meat.

Alkylbenzenes, such as toluene and -xylene, are an important class of contaminant hydrocarbons that are widespread and tend to accumulate in subsurface anoxic environments. The peripheral pathway for the anaerobic oxidation of toluene in bacteria consists of an initial activation catalyzed by a benzylsuccinate synthase (encoded by genes), and a subsequent modified β-oxidation of benzylsuccinate to benzoyl-CoA and succinyl-CoA (encoded by genes). We have shown here that the and genes, which are located within an integrative and conjugative element, are essential for anaerobic degradation of toluene but also for -xylene oxidation in the denitrifying beta-proteobacterium sp.
