An occurrence of Vibrio cholerae non-O1/O139 gastroenteritis in the U.S. Gulf Coast is reported here.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThird generation cephalosporins are commonly used in the treatment of leptospirosis. The efficacy of first generation cephalosporins has been less well-studied. Susceptibility testing of 13 Leptospira strains (11 serovars) to cefazolin and cephalexin was conducted using broth microdilution.

The preferred first line treatment is trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole; however, second line treatments for those intolerant of this regimen have been primarily studied in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We report a case of Pneumocystis pneumonia in a 75-year-old man with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and a history of sulfa allergy successfully treated with clindamycin-primaquine.

Dilute solutions of a weak acid (phenol) and 1 in a hydrocarbon solvent, when subjected to decreasing temperature, show striking changes in electronic absorption spectra. Initially only the spectrum of compound 1 is present, but as the temperature is lowered, the absorbance of 1 decreases, and the spectrum of the H-bonded form of 1 appears and increases.

In separate experiments, hydrocarbon solutions of the 11-cis isomers of retinol and retinal containing catalytic amounts of iodine were irradiated with monochromatic light. Changes in absorbance were followed spectroscopically for each wavelength of light and measured as a function of time. The curve obtained by plotting the change in absorbance (delta A) vs time (t) is a hyperbola, and thus the plot of 1/delta A vs 1/t forms a straight line.

Iodide salts of several N-retinylidenedialkylamines were prepared and their UV-VIS spectra recorded. Their lambda max values increased as the number of hydrogen atoms on the carbons alpha to nitrogen increased. In separate experiments, iodide salts of N-retinylidene-n-butylammonium (1) and N-retinylidene-n-butylmethylammonium (2) were prepared, and their excitation energies (delta E) were measured in selected solvents of varying dielectric constant (epsilon).
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe specific conteranion and the solvent have been shown to regulate the electronic excitation energy of the N-retinylidene-n-butylammonium cation. Halogenated hydrocarbon solvents which can hydrogen bond with the anion shift the lambda-max to longer wavelengths, whereas the solvent dipole, acting as a bulk effect, shifts the wavelength-max to shorter wavelength. Here solvents which can donate two hydrogens for hydrogen bonding, such as cis- and trans-1,2-dichloroethylene and cis- and trans-1,2-dichlorocyclohexane, are used as solvents for the Cl-, Br-, and I- salts.

It is a fundamental property of conjugated systems to accept a proton or Lewis acid and form a stable carbonium ion. Polyenes that are protonated or add Lewis acids in this manner undergo substantial red shifts. For example, vitamin A(1) acetate absorbs at 350 mmicro in neutral and at 650 mmicro in acidic benzene solution.
