Septin proteins are conserved structural proteins that often demarcate regions of cell division. The essential nature of the septin ring, composed of several septin proteins, complicates investigation of the functions of the ring, although careful analysis in the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has elucidated the role that septins play in the cell cycle. Mutation analysis of nonessential septins in the pathogenic fungus Candida albicans has shown that septins also have vital roles in cell wall regulation (CWR), hyphal formation, and pathogenesis.

Recent evidence suggests that, like adding exercise, reducing sitting time may improve cardiometabolic health. There has not been a direct comparison of the 2 strategies with energy expenditure held constant. The purpose of this study was to compare fasting and postmeal glucose and insulin concentrations in response to a day with frequent breaks from sitting but no exercise versus considerable sitting plus moderate exercise.

Twice-yearly child health weeks are an effective way of reaching children with essential child survival services in developing countries. In Kenya, child health weeks, or Malezi Bora, were restructured in 2007 from an outreach-based delivery structure to a health facility-based delivery structure to reduce delivery costs and increase sustainability of the events. Administrative data from 2007 to 2011 have demonstrated a decrease in coverage of Malezi Bora services to targeted children.

Aim: Estimate the efficacy of Case Management (CM) for women at high risk for bearing a child with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).

Design: Women were recruited from antenatal clinics and engaged in 18 months of CM.

Setting: A South African community with a subculture of heavy, regular, weekend, recreational drinking and high documented rates of FASD.

This article provides a brief history of national payment and reimbursement systems, and discusses potential changes that will impact CV imaging in the coming years. Data over the last decade are presented on payment and utilization of services to demonstrate the impact of reimbursement reforms and education on imaging use.

This study assesses lateral tipping motion-induced interruptions (MIIs) in a simulated motion environment. The objective is to revisit MII occurrence and sway motion relationship by focusing on the frequency and acceleration of the lateral motion stimulus. Results verify that MIIs increase with increasing peak sway acceleration, but the effect of sway frequency is not as clear as that of acceleration.

In this study, we describe the nutritional status of women from a South African community with very high rates of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Nutrient intake (24-h recall) of mothers of children with FASD was compared to mothers of normal controls. Nutrient adequacy was assessed using Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs).

Background: Concise, accurate measures of maternal prenatal alcohol use are needed to better understand fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD).

Methods: Measures of drinking by mothers of children with specific FASD diagnoses and mothers of randomly-selected controls are compared and also correlated with physical and cognitive/behavioral outcomes.

Results: Measures of maternal alcohol use can differentiate maternal drinking associated with FASD from that of controls and some from mothers of alcohol-exposed normals.

Background: In Sierra Leone, children ages 6-59 months receive twice-yearly vitamin A supplementation (VAS) through Maternal and Child Health Week (MCHW) events. VAS coverage in 2011 was calculated using government tally sheets of vitamin A capsule distribution and outdated population projections from the 2004 census. We conducted a national post-event coverage (PEC) survey to validate coverage and inform strategies to reach universal coverage of VAS in Sierra Leone.

Objective: To provide an analysis of multiple predictors of cognitive and behavioral traits for children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs).

Method: Multivariate correlation techniques were used with maternal and child data from epidemiologic studies in a community in South Africa. Data on 561 first-grade children with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), partial FAS (PFAS), and not FASD and their mothers were analyzed by grouping 19 maternal variables into categories (physical, demographic, childbearing, and drinking) and used in structural equation models (SEMs) to assess correlates of child intelligence (verbal and nonverbal) and behavior.

Patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) admitted during nonregular working hours (off-hours) have been reported to have greater mortality than those admitted during regular working hours (on-hours), perhaps because of the lower availability of catheterization laboratory services and longer door-to-balloon times. This might not be the case, however, for hospital centers in which primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is invariably performed. We conducted a substudy using the Harmonizing Outcomes with Revascularization and Stents in Acute Myocardial Infarction study data to determine whether the STEMI arrival time was associated with differing clinical outcomes.
