Effectiveness of pancreatic stent placement in pediatric patients with acute recurrent and chronic pancreatitis.

Background: The use of pancreatic prostheses in children with acute recurrent pancreatitis (ARP) and chronic pancreatitis (CP) has evolved. The main established indication is the treatment of persistent abdominal pain. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of pancreatic stenting for refractory abdominal pain in pediatric patients with ARP and CP.

Clinical and paraclinical characteristics in pediatric patients with acute recurrent and chronic pancreatitis: a cohort in Mexico.

Background: Acute recurrent pancreatitis (ARP) and chronic pancreatitis (CP) are infrequent clinical entities in pediatric patients, as less than 8% of the literature mentions this population. This study aimed to describe the clinical and paraclinical profile, and the etiology related to patients with ARP and CP attended at a tertiary-level healthcare institute in Mexico.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study from medical records of patients with ARP and CP attended between 2010 and 2020, analyzing the clinical characteristics, imaging studies, and the etiology associated with each patient.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome in pediatric patients: experience in a tertiary care institution in Mexico.

Background: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) is a rare autosomal dominant inherited disease characterized by the development of polyps in the gastrointestinal tract, mucocutaneous pigmentation, and the risk of developing malignant neoplasms. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological, clinical, and histopathological data of patients with PJS treated in a tertiary pediatric hospital.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective observational study to describe the epidemiological, clinical, endoscopic, and histological characterization of patients with PJS treated in a tertiary pediatric hospital in Mexico.

Endoscopic management of recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula with trichloroacetic acid in pediatric patients.

Introduction: Surgical repair of recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula has a high risk of complications. Therefore, various endoscopic techniques have been used to avoid complications.

Objective: To understand the usefulness of trichloroacetic acid endoscopic application for the treatment of recurrent tracheoesophageal fistula.

Importance of early endoscopic and clinical evaluation of children with caustics ingestion.

Background: Accidental ingestion of caustics in pediatrics continues to be a frequent problem that can lead to severe injuries and permanent sequelae that require esophageal rehabilitation programs. This study aimed to describe the medical care experience of children who ingested caustic substances in a tertiary hospital in Mexico City.

Methods: We conducted a descriptive and analytical study.

Screening for COVID-19 in Children Undergoing Elective Invasive Procedures.

Objective: To report the frequency of asymptomatic infection with SARS-CoV-2 in pediatric patients undergoing invasive medical procedures in a tertiary pediatric hospital.

Methods: From June to October 2020, a SARS-CoV-2 real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) test was performed for all pediatric patients scheduled to undergo an elective invasive procedure. None of the patients was symptomatic.

Modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA) is a live, attenuated human smallpox vaccine and a vector for the development of new vaccines against infectious diseases and cancer. Efficient activation of the immune system by MVA partially relies on its encounter with dendritic cells (DCs). MVA infection of DCs leads to multiple outcomes, including cytokine production, activation of costimulatory molecules for T cell stimulation, and cell death.

Rituximab in the Treatment of Interstitial Lung Disease Associated with Autoimmune Diseases: Experience from a Single Referral Center and Literature Review.

In the present study, we aimed to report our experience with rituximab (RTX) in the treatment of patients with ILD associated with AD (AD-ILD) at a single center. For this purpose, clinical characteristics, radiological findings, and pulmonary function tests (PFTs) of RTX-treated AD-ILD-patients seen from May 2016 until March 2020 at a referral center for individuals with ILD were retrospectively reviewed. Additionally, an updated literature review was conducted.

The Spectrum of Interstitial Lung Disease Associated with Autoimmune Diseases: Data of a 3.6-Year Prospective Study from a Referral Center of Interstitial Lung Disease and Lung Transplantation.

Interstitial lung disease (ILD) may occur in patients with a rheumatic autoimmune disease (AD), increasing their risk of morbidity and mortality. However, little is known about the prevalence of AD in patients diagnosed with an ILD. In this prospective study, we determined the spectrum of ILD associated with AD (AD-ILD) among patients sent for assessment to a single clinic of ILD and lung transplantation from a referral center between May 2016 and December 2019.

Efficacy of 1-day vs. 2-day intestinal preparation using peg 3350 + Bisacodyl: A randomized clinical trial.

Introduction: Foreign body (FB) ingestion is a common home accident during childhood; a timely management by the specialists may help prevent complications in the short and long term.

Foreign body aspiration is a pediatric urgency that occurs primarily between 1 and 3 years old. The aim of this paper is to present the symptomatology, clinical and radiological findings, and the therapeutic used in our hospital with patients with foreign body aspiration diagnosis from 1995 until 2011. Patient's age was between 0 and 16 years old.

[Diagnosing pneumothorax with ultrasonography].

The ultrasonographic diagnosis of pneumothorax is based on the analysis of artifacts. It is possible to confirm or rule out pneumothorax by combining the following signs: lung sliding, the A and B lines, and the lung point. One fundamental advantage of lung ultrasonography is its easy access in any critical situation, especially in patients in the intensive care unit.

Transluminal endoscopic electrosurgical incision of fenestrated duodenal membranes.

Duodenal fenestrated membranes are traditionally treated by side-to-side diamond-shaped duodenoduodenostomy, or duodenotomy and resection. We describe an alternative endoscopic approach for its resolution. A flexible panendoscopy reaching the duodenal membrane was performed.

[Anterior approach for the surgical treatment of a laryngotracheoesophageal cleft].

Laryngotracheoesophageal clefts (LTEC) are rare and potentially lethal malformations. Their therapeutic approach is still controversial. We report on a one month old infant with a type III LTEC who presented with aspiration and was fed through an orogastric tube for three weeks.

A new endoscopic procedure for membranectomy of fenestrated duodenal membranes.

Aim Of The Study: We describe a new endoscopic procedure for membranectomy of fenestrated duodenal membranes.

Methods: With the patients under general anesthesia and tracheally intubated, a flexible video-panendoscope was introduced into the second portion of the duodenum. The fenestrated membrane was visualized and a triple-lumen stone extraction balloon of 15 mm was inserted through the fenestration.

A randomized trial comparing laryngeal mask airway to endotracheal tube in children undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Although the efficacy of laryngeal mask airway (LMA) has been demonstrated for securing patency of the airway in children, it has not yet been compared to endotracheal tube (ET) in this population. This study aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of LMA vs. ET in children undergoing elective diagnostic upper gastrointestinal endoscopies.

Preoperative catheterization of H-type tracheoesophageal fistula to facilitate its localization and surgical correction.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to demonstrate that preoperative catheterization of H-type tracheoesophageal fistula facilitates its identification and surgical correction.

Methods: This is a case series of seven patients with H-type tracheoesophageal fistula. Diagnosis was established in three patients and suspected in two more by means of an esophagogram.

Primary cricotracheal resection with thyrotracheal anastomosis for the treatment of severe subglottic stenosis in children and adolescents.

Severe subglottic stenosis in children is best managed by laryngotracheal reconstruction or cricotracheal resection (CTR). We describe clinical outcomes with CTR and end-to-end anastomosis in pediatric patients with severe subglottic stenosis in a tertiary-care pediatric teaching hospital in Mexico City. We prospectively followed up all consecutive patients younger than 18 years of age with a Myer-Cotton grade 3 or 4 subglottic stenosis who underwent CTR between May 1, 2000, and March 31, 2003.

[Eosinophilic proctocolitis induced by foods. Report of a case].

The food-induced eosinophilic proctocolitis is a major cause of blood-tinged stools and appears in the first two months of life. The infant is generally described as well, but the clinical features and laboratory results are often nonspecific. We present an early infant with fresh blood stools at 50 days.
