This article describes a new measurement system for the comparison of two electronic signals of different frequencies with application to high resolution comparison of laser wavelengths using a Michelson interferometer. It was built within the framework of research projects made by the University of Vigo and the Laboratorio Oficial de Metroloxía de Galicia (LOMG) in cooperation with Escolas Proval High School. The new hardware is based on a cheap high-speed module for the acquisition of data and a microcontroller module for processing, which can also be used for practical lessons in vocational training.

Humans evolved by losing the capacity to synthesize the glycan Galα1-3Galβ1-(3)4GlcNAc-R (α-Gal), which resulted in the development of a protective response mediated by anti-α-Gal IgM/IgG/IgA antibodies against pathogens containing this modification on membrane proteins. As an evolutionary trade-off, humans can develop the alpha-Gal syndrome (AGS), a recently diagnosed disease mediated by anti-α-Gal IgE antibodies and associated with allergic reactions to mammalian meat consumption and tick bites. However, the anti-α-Gal antibody response may be associated with other immune-mediated disorders such as those occurring in patients with COVID-19 and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS).

The NO donor 3-Morpholinosydnonimine (SIN-1) releases NO in the presence of molecular oxygen. In this study, we evaluated the effect of SIN-1 on mitochondria of rat cortical synaptosomes. We demonstrated in vitro that the amount of ONOO(-) generated and H(2)O(2) formation directly correlated with SIN-1 concentration.

We report the measurement of transient bending waves with double-pulsed-subtraction TV holography. The correlation fringe patterns are automatically quantitatively analyzed by the application of Fourier methods. A novel optical setup with two different object-beam optical paths is demonstrated for the generation of carrier fringes.

Castleman's disease is an uncommon benign lymphoid disorder usually found in the mediastinum (70 %) which is thought to be due to antigenic hyperstimulation of unknown origin. Two histological subtypes may be found in relation to two different clinical patterns with clinical and therapeutic implications. Diagnosis is frequently accomplished only by histological analysis after surgery since no specific features have been found in imaging studies.

The Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery has posibilitated a change in the diagnosis, treatment and postsurgical management of many nasosinusal diseases. Laryngeal cysts represent a defined group of benign lesions with an actual not well know pathogenesis although fibrosis and glandular obstruction or congenital origin are presumed rather than new growths. When such cysts occur, as a general rule, with the exception of some particular locations, they develop with very few symptoms until very large size is reached or a fast growth is produced due to bleeding or infection. Under these conditions, these cysts may represent a potential treatening lesion and so surgery is recommended under any circunstance and anaesthetic procedure should be case-addapted.

Iron is released in a desferrioxamine (DFO)-chelatable form when erythrocytes are challenged by an oxidative stress. The release is increased when an accelerated removal of erythrocytes occurs such as in perinatal period, in which iron release is greater in hypoxic than in non-hypoxic newborns. This suggests that an hypoxic environment at birth promotes iron release.

Fizeau interferograms are evaluated by two-beam phase-stepping algorithms. The sinusoidal intensity profile pattern needed for the application of these algorithms is obtained by low-pass filtering the moiré pattern provided by the superposition of the interferogram onto a Ronchi grid. The phase modulation is performed by the in-plane displacement of the grid by means of a motorized stage.

We report the measurement of reproducible transient deformations with single-pulsed-subtraction and double-pulsed-addition TV holography with both in-plane and out-of-plane optical configurations. An original synchronization system (controlling mechanical excitation of the object, firing the laser pulses, and image acquisition) used to obtain the subtraction and the addition correlation fringes is described. Experimental results are presented for the propagation of mechanical shock waves in a cantilever specimen and their subsequent diffraction by a crack in the specimen.

The spectrum of the intensity profile of multiple-beam Fizeau interferograms is presented. Knowledge of this spectrum provides valuable information about the characteristics of Fizeau interferograms, allowing one to calculate the phase error when the Fizeau profile is evaluated by means of two-beam phase-stepping algorithms, as is usual for low-reflectivity coefficients.

The automation of the fringe pattern analysis in Fizeau interferometry combining the moiré effect with the phase-stepping evaluation method is presented. In this case the phase modulator is a Ronchi grid placed at the interferometer image plane yielding a moiré image, and the necessary phase steps are obtained, simply translating the grid in its own plane, perpendicular to the optical axis. A detailed description of the moiré image formation as an incoherent superposition is developed.
