Unlabelled: The efficacy of prebiotics and probiotics (synbiotics when combined) to improve symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has shown considerable inter-study variation, likely due to the complex, heterogeneous nature of the disorder and its associated behavioral, developmental, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Here, we present a precision synbiotic supplementation study in 296 children and adults diagnosed with ASD versus 123 age-matched neurotypical controls. One hundred seventy ASD participants completed the study.

Do miscarriage care practice recommendations align with individuals' needs?: A scoping review.

Objectives: Miscarriage is a common occurrence; yet individuals often have negative experiences when receiving miscarriage care, signaling a gap in the quality of miscarriage care. We explore the literature on individuals' experiences with miscarriage care across a variety of dimensions and assess how these experiences align with practice recommendations.

Study Design: We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed studies in PubMed published in English through April 30, 2022, and focused on individuals' experiences with miscarriage care in healthcare settings and on practice recommendations for providing care in a variety of countries.

A commentary on progestin-only pills and the "three-hour window" guidelines: Timing of ingestion and mechanisms of action.

Clinical guidelines for progestin-only pills (POPs) state that each pill should be taken at the same time each day, with only a "three-hour window" of tolerance before back-up contraception should be used. In this commentary, we summarize studies examining the timing of ingestion and mechanisms of action for various POP formulations and dosages. We found that different progestins have different properties that determine the effect of delayed or missed pills on effectiveness at preventing pregnancy.

Effectiveness and efficacy rates of progestin-only pills: A comprehensive literature review.

Objectives: To synthesize published literature on POP effectiveness and efficacy.

Study Design: We searched PubMed Central, PubMed, and the Cochrane library through March 07, 2022. We included articles written in English reporting a Pearl Index or life table rate for pregnancy.

Interest in Continued Use After Participation in a Study of Over-the-Counter Progestin-Only Pills in the United States.

Objective: To assess interest in continued use of over-the-counter progestin-only pills among individuals who used them in a trial.

Methods: From January 2020 to September 2021, we conducted a cross-sectional online survey with individuals who completed participation in a trial evaluating over-the-counter use of norgestrel 0.075 mg tablets in the United States.

Pilot label comprehension study for an over-the-counter combined oral contraceptive pill in the United States.

Context: A growing body of evidence supports over-the-counter access to oral contraceptives in the United States. An important consideration for over-the-counter approval is consumers' ability to understand key package label messages related to safety and effectiveness without clinician involvement. Background: Efforts are underway to make a progestin-only pill (POP) over the counter (OTC) in the United States (US); however, little is known about POP user experiences, which could impact uptake and continuation.

Methods: From January 2020-September 2021, we conducted a cross-sectional online survey with individuals who used OTC POPs in a US trial. We calculated descriptive statistics and Pearson chi-square and Fisher's exact tests to assess menstrual bleeding acceptability, how OTC POP experiences compared with prior contraceptive methods, and preferred ways to get answers to questions during OTC POP use.

Altered resting-state functional connectivity in hiPSCs-derived neuronal networks from schizophrenia patients.

Schizophrenia (SZ) is a severe mental disorder that arises from abnormal neurodevelopment, caused by genetic and environmental factors. SZ often involves distortions in reality perception and it is widely associated with alterations in brain connectivity. In the present work, we used Human Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (hiPSCs)-derived neuronal cultures to study neural communicational dynamics during early development in SZ.

Pain, Side Effects, and Abortion Experience Among People Seeking Abortion Care in the Second Trimester.

Background: There is limited documentation about pain and side effects associated with dilation and evacuation (D&E) abortion, yet, pain and side effects are important factors that can affect a client's abortion experience. In 2016, Hope Clinic for Women, an independent abortion clinic in Illinois, altered its cervical preparation protocols before D&E to reduce the total time of the abortion process and improve the client experience. This analysis addresses the gap in data on client experience of abortion in the later second trimester by evaluating pain, side effects, and acceptability by gestational age.

Veterans Health Administration Staff Perceptions of Overseeing Care in Community Nursing Homes During COVID-19.

Introduction: The Veterans Health Administration (VA) contracts with non-VA owned and operated community nursing homes (CNHs) to provide Veterans nursing home care. This study explored VA staffs' experiences coordinating care with CNH staff during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods: Qualitative study interviewing VA staff overseeing and coordinating care for CNH Veterans.

A cross-sectional survey of U.S. abortion patients' interest in obtaining medication abortion over the counter.

Objective: To assess abortion patients' perspectives about a hypothetical option to access medication abortion over the counter without a prescription.

Study Design: From October 2019 to March 2020, people ages 15 and over seeking abortion at 7 facilities across the United States completed a cross-sectional, self-administered survey regarding their personal interest in and general support for accessing medication abortion over the counter, including the advantages and disadvantages of over-the-counter access. We used multivariable logistic regression with generalized estimating equations to assess associations between experiencing barriers that led to delay in obtaining abortion care and personal interest in and general support for accessing medication abortion over the counter.

Accuracy of self-assessment of gestational duration among people seeking abortion.

Background: Mifepristone, used together with misoprostol, is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for medication abortion through 10 weeks' gestation. Although in-person ultrasound is frequently used to establish medication abortion eligibility, previous research demonstrates that people seeking abortion early in pregnancy can accurately self-assess gestational duration using the date of their last menstrual period.

Objective: In this study, we establish the screening performance of a broader set of questions for self-assessment of gestational duration among a sample of people seeking abortion at a wide range of gestations.

Staff Experiences with a Team-based Approach to Sleep Medicine Referrals: A Qualitative Evaluation.

Sleep disorders are highly prevalent, and the volume of referrals sent to sleep specialists frequently exceeds their capacity. To manage this demand, we will need to consider sustainable strategies to expand the reach of our sleep medicine workforce. This article is one in a series in which contributing authors discuss how the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are linked to everyday clinical issues; national public health emergencies; and other nursing issues, such as leadership, shared governance, and advocacy. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a 15-year plan of action to achieve the goals, was unanimously adopted by all UN member states in September 2015 and took effect on January 1, 2016. The Agenda consists of 17 SDGs addressing social, economic, and environmental determinants of health and 169 associated targets focused on five themes: people, planet, peace, prosperity, and partnership.

Foley catheter and misoprostol for cervical preparation for second-trimester surgical abortion.

Objective: Document the effectiveness and safety of Foley balloon catheter and misoprostol use for cervical preparation before a same-day dilation and evacuation (D&E).

Study Design: We conducted a retrospective medical records review of adult patients with viable pregnancies at 18 weeks 0 days to 21 weeks 6 days gestation who received a same-day D&E at an Alabama clinic using a 30-cc Foley balloon catheter and misoprostol for cervical preparation from January 2016 through December 2017. Patients received misoprostol 800 mcg buccally at the time of Foley placement and then every 4 hours until the physician deemed that dilation/effacement was adequate to proceed with a D&E.

There is no corner of the planet that has not been impacted by the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. While the COVID-19 pandemic has already had far-reaching socioeconomic consequences commonly associated with natural hazards (such as disruption to society, economic damage, and loss of lives), the response of governments around the world has been unparalleled and unlike anything seen before. Governments are faced with a myriad of multi-dimensional effects of the pandemic, including direct impacts on public health systems and population health and indirect socioeconomic effects including disruption to every single sector of the economy and mass unemployment.

Patient experiences with telehealth in sleep medicine: a qualitative evaluation.

Study Objectives: The field of sleep medicine has been an avid adopter of telehealth, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of this study was to assess patients' experiences receiving sleep care by telehealth.

Methods: From June 2019 to May 2020, the authors recruited a sample of patients for semi-structured interviews, including patients who had 1 of 3 types of telehealth encounters in sleep medicine: in-clinic video, home-based video, and telephone.

Predictors of antiretroviral therapy initiation in eThekwini (Durban), South Africa: Findings from a prospective cohort study.
