Background: The Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment (ReSPECT) includes agreed clinical recommendations for a person's care in a future emergency which have been informed by discussion of the person's preferences. Previous evaluation of ReSPECT plans in acute NHS hospitals found inconsistencies in recording patient's preferences and involvement in the plan, and infrequent justification for recommendations.

Objective: A new monthly virtual education curriculum on sexual healthcare was launched in 2021. This is an analysis of the pilot education series designed to increase primary care providers' knowledge of sexual health best practices including taking thorough sexual histories, STI screening and treatment, and PrEP prescribing.

Galectin-3 is a β-galactoside-specific, carbohydrate-recognizing protein (lectin) that is strongly implicated in cancer development, metastasis, and drug resistance. Galectin-3 promotes migration and ability to withstand drug treatment of B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (BCP-ALL) cells. Due to high amino acid conservation among galectins and the shallow nature of their glycan-binding site, the design of selective potent antagonists targeting galectin-3 is challenging.

This paper describes the development of a novel medical x-ray imaging system adapted to the needs and constraints of low- and middle-income countries. The developed system is based on an indirect conversion chain: a scintillator plate produces visible light when excited by the x rays, and then, a calibrated multi-camera architecture converts the visible light from the scintillator into a set of digital images. The partial images are then unwarped, enhanced, and stitched through parallel field programmable gate array processing units and specialized software.

Human galectin-3 (Gal-3) is involved in a variety of biological processes and is implicated in wide range of diseases. As a result, targeting Gal-3 for clinical applications has become an intense area of research. As a step towards the development of novel Gal-3 inhibitors, we describe a study of the binding of two Se-containing Gal-3 inhibitors, specifically that of di(β-D-galactopyranosyl)selenide (SeDG), in which two galactose rings are linked by one Se atom and a di(β-D-galactopyranosyl)diselenide (DSeDG) analogue with a diseleno bond between the two sugar units.

We describe nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections during 2012-2020 associated with health care and aesthetic procedures in France. We obtained epidemiologic data from the national early warning response system for healtcare-associated infections and data on NTM isolates from the National Reference Center for Mycobacteria. We compared clinical and environmental isolates by using whole-genome sequencing.

Purpose: Taste and smell alterations (TAs and SAs) are often reported by patients with cancer receiving systemic antitumor therapy and can negatively impact food intake and quality of life. This study aimed to examine the occurrence of TAs and SAs and investigate the impact of TAs on overall liking of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) with warming and cooling sensations.

Methods: Patients receiving systemic antitumor therapy completed a questionnaire on sensory alterations and evaluated overall liking of 5 prototype flavors of Nutridrink® Compact Protein (hot tropical ginger (HTG), hot mango (HM), cool red fruits (CRF), cool lemon (CL), and neutral (N)) on a 10-point scale via a sip test.

Galectin-8 is a β-galactoside-recognizing protein having an important role in the regulation of bone remodeling and cancer progression and metastasis. Methyl β-d-galactopyranoside malonyl aromatic esters have been designed to target and engage with particular amino acid residues of the galectin-8 extended carbohydrate-binding site. The chemically synthesized compounds had binding affinity toward galectin-8 in the range of 5-33 μM, as evaluated by isothermal titration calorimetry.

Galectin-8 is a β-galactoside-recognising protein that has a role in the regulation of bone remodelling and is an emerging new target for tackling diseases with associated bone loss. We have designed and synthesised methyl 3-O-[1-carboxyethyl]-β-d-galactopyranoside (compound 6) as a ligand to target the N-terminal domain of galectin-8 (galectin-8N). Our design involved molecular dynamics (MD) simulations that predicted 6 to mimic the interactions made by the galactose ring as well as the carboxylic acid group of 3'-O-sialylated lactose (3'-SiaLac), with galectin-8N.

Galectins are carbohydrate binding proteins (lectins), which characteristically bind β-galactosides. Galectins play a role in tumour progression through involvement in proliferation, metastasis, angiogenesis, immune evasion and drug resistance. There is need for inhibitors (antagonists) that are specific for distinct galectins and that can interfere with galectin-carbohydrate interactions during cancer progression.
