Background: Arterial hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy and remodeling are independent cardiovascular risk factors in patients with Cushing's syndrome. Changes in the renin-angiotensin system and in the mineralocorticoid axis activity could be involved as potential mechanisms in their pathogenesis, in addition to cortisol excess.

Methods: In this ancillary study of our previous study prospectively investigating patients with ACTH-dependent Cushing's syndrome by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (NCT02202902), 11 patients without any interfering medication were cross-sectionally compared to 20 control subjects matched for age, sex and body mass index.

Background: Avian mycoplasmas are small bacteria associated with several pathogenic conditions in many wild and poultry bird species. Extensive genomic data are available for many avian mycoplasmas, yet no comparative studies focusing on this group of mycoplasmas have been undertaken so far.

Results: Here, based on the comparison of forty avian mycoplasma genomes belonging to ten different species, we provide insightful information on the phylogeny, pan/core genome, energetic metabolism, and virulence of these avian pathogens.

Brain development is a non-linear process of regionally specific epochs occurring during windows of sensitivity to endogenous and exogenous stimuli. We have identified an epoch in the neonatal rat brain defined by a transient population of peri-hippocampal mast cells (phMCs) that are abundant from birth through 2-weeks post-natal but absent thereafter. The phMCs are maintained by proliferation and harbor a unique transcriptome compared with mast cells residing in the skin, bone marrow, or other brain regions.

Motivation: Current methods for visualising and interrogating high-throughput transposon insertion mutagenesis sequencing (TIS) data requires a significant time investment in learning bioinformatics, often producing static figures that do not facilitate real time analysis.

Summary: We have created an accessible web-based browser tool for visualisation and downstream analysis of high-throughput TIS data results generated by the PIMMS analysis pipeline. This includes multiple interactive and sortable tables to aid the user to identify genes of interest, enabling the user to gain a greater understanding of the genes contributing to fitness in their experimental work.

We conducted a pre-registered meta-analysis of studies that directly compared the predictive validity of risk assessment tools to unstructured judgments of risk for violent, any, or sexual offending. A total of 31 studies, containing 169 effect sizes from 45,673 risk judgments, met inclusion criteria. Based on the results of three-level mixed-effects meta-regression models, the predictive validity of total scores on risk assessment tools was significantly higher than that of unstructured judgments for predictions of violent, any, and sexual offending.

Dairy slurry is a major source of environmental contamination with antimicrobial resistant genes and bacteria. We developed mathematical models and conducted on-farm research to explore the impact of wastewater flows and management practices on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in slurry. Overall, rifampin-containing shortened regimens are the preferred modality for LTBI treatment.
