Gestational breast cancer (GBC), defined as breast cancer (BC) diagnosed during pregnancy or the first-year post-partum, accounts for 6-15% of BC cases in women aged 20-44 years. GBC has worse prognosis than non-GBC, but reasons behind are not clear. The GEICAM/2012-03 Study (Molecular Characterization of Gestational Breast Cancer) is a multicenter prospective/retrospective observational registry of patients diagnosed with GBC.

Article Synopsis
  • Leptomeningeal disease (LMD) significantly impacts survival and quality of life, and trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd) has demonstrated effectiveness in treating advanced HER2-positive and HER2-low breast cancer in patients with a history of brain metastases or LMD.
  • In a phase 2 trial involving seven patients with confirmed LMD, T-DXd was administered, revealing a median overall survival (OS) of 13.3 months and a progression-free survival (PFS) of 8.9 months, with many patients achieving disease stabilization.
  • The results suggest T-DXd has promising activity in this challenging patient population, indicating a need for further research on its efficacy in treating LMD.

Children with complex communication needs (CCN) regularly have barriers to express and discuss emotions, and have fewer opportunities to participate in emotional conversations. The study explores and analyzes the changes after a training program focused on offering an interactive home learning environment that encouraged and modeled emotion-related conversations between a parent and a child with CCN within storybook-reading contexts. An observational design (nomothetic/follow-up/multidimensional) was used to explore and analyze the changes in the communicative interaction around emotions between mother-child.

Purpose This clinical focus article introduces a summary profile template, called the (EDEC-P). This profile distills information from a longer interview tool that solicits a detailed case history (the EDEC), but in a format that is readily accessible for communication partners of children with complex communication needs, including parents, educators, and other professionals. Method In this clinical focus article, we will (a) introduce the EDEC-P structure, (b) illustrate via case examples the types of information that can be shared, and (c) offer preliminary feedback from parents and other professionals on its usefulness.

Background: Delays in help-seeking for anxiety are common; however, earlier interventions improve long-term outcomes. This holds importance for high schizotypes since anxiety relates to psychotic symptom development. The study investigated whether schizotypal traits and anxiety itself influence help-seeking behaviour.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers applied a new testing protocol to analyze samples from 220 patients across various Spanish hospitals, finding that 88.6% had at least one RAS, with specific patterns linked to different HCV subtypes.
  • * The findings reveal that certain patients had RAS not affected by the drugs they received, indicating the necessity for thorough RAS testing, especially since ribavirin treatment did not impact RAS diversity or type.

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) characterized by the severe deficiency of a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with a thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13 (ADAMTS13) activity (< 10%). Rapid ADAMTS13 testing is crucial for an early diagnosis and optimal management of acute TTP. We evaluated the performance of the HemosIL AcuStar ADAMTS13 activity assay (Instrumentation Laboratory, Bedford, Massachusetts, United States), a fully automated chemiluminescent immunoassay with an analytical time of 33 minutes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of combining oral metronomic vinorelbine (mVNB) with letrozole (LTZ) in postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive (HR+)/HER2-negative breast cancer.
  • The primary focus was to assess whether the combination therapy had a greater anti-proliferative effect on tumor cells compared to either treatment alone, with results showing the combination therapy significantly reduced cancer cell proliferation.
  • Secondary analyses included evaluating safety and gene expression changes, indicating increased immune-related gene activity in the combination group.

Jak3, one of the four members comprising the Jak family of cytosolic tyrosine kinases, has emerged as a promising target for nontoxic immunotherapies. Although a number of Jak inhibitors has already demonstrated efficacy, they suffer from secondary effects apparently associated to their pan-Jak activity. However, whether selective Jak3 inhibition would afford therapeutic efficacy remains unclear.

Background: The equations available for the prediction of basal energy expenditure (BEE) may not be applicable in morbid obese individuals since the contribution of the fat free mass (FFM) over the BEE is not constant. The aim of this study was to obtain new equations for the prediction of BEE which are specific for patients with morbid obesity.

Methods: In 26 women with morbid obesity age, weight, body composition by bioelectric impedance and BEE by open circuit indirect calorimetry were determined.
