Prior history of non-melanoma skin cancer is associated with increased mortality in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

We investigated whether a previous diagnosis of non-melanoma skin cancer among chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients is a predictor of poor outcome. Using the Swedish Cancer Registry, we conducted a population-based study to evaluate the survival patterns among chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients with and without non-melanoma skin cancer. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used and Kaplan-Meier curves were constructed.

We observe a giant increase of the infrared intensity and a softening of the in-plane antisymmetric phonon mode E(u) ( approximately 0.2 eV) in bilayer graphene as a function of the gate-induced doping. The phonon peak has a pronounced Fano-like asymmetry.

Germline mutations in the cylindromatosis (CYLD) gene have been described in families with cylindromas, trichoepitheliomas, and/or spiradenomas. Brooke-Spiegler syndrome (BSS) is the autosomal dominant predisposition to skin appendageal neoplasms including cylindromas, trichoepitheliomas, and/or spiradenomas. We review the clinical features, molecular genetics, and the animal models of BSS.

Patterns of care for radiotherapy in vulvar cancer: a Gynecologic Cancer Intergroup study.

Background: This study aimed to describe radiotherapeutic practice in the treatment of vulvar cancer in member study groups of the Gynecologic Cancer Intergroup (GCIG).

Methods: A survey was developed and distributed to representatives of the member study groups of the GCIG, targeting the use of radiotherapy (RT) in vulvar cancer.

Autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis (ARCI) is a heterogeneous group of rare cornification diseases. Germline mutations in TGM1 are the most common cause of ARCI in the United States. TGM1 encodes for the TGase-1 enzyme that functions in the formation of the cornified cell envelope.

Control of graphene's properties by reversible hydrogenation: evidence for graphane.

Although graphite is known as one of the most chemically inert materials, we have found that graphene, a single atomic plane of graphite, can react with atomic hydrogen, which transforms this highly conductive zero-overlap semimetal into an insulator. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that the obtained graphene derivative (graphane) is crystalline and retains the hexagonal lattice, but its period becomes markedly shorter than that of graphene. The reaction with hydrogen is reversible, so that the original metallic state, the lattice spacing, and even the quantum Hall effect can be restored by annealing.

Adjuvant external beam radiotherapy in the treatment of endometrial cancer (MRC ASTEC and NCIC CTG EN.5 randomised trials): pooled trial results, systematic review, and meta-analysis.

Background: Early endometrial cancer with low-risk pathological features can be successfully treated by surgery alone. External beam radiotherapy added to surgery has been investigated in several small trials, which have mainly included women at intermediate risk of recurrence. In these trials, postoperative radiotherapy has been shown to reduce the risk of isolated local recurrence but there is no evidence that it improves recurrence-free or overall survival.

Tapered optical fibers designed for surface plasmon resonance phase matching.

Combining a modified two-step chemical etch method with equations to predict etch parameters and photon-plasmon phase-matching resulted in single-mode tapered optical fibers (TOFs) to optimize electromagnetic field enhancement. The phase-matching equation was used to identify the angle of incidence near the TOF cutoff radius at which surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is maximized. The axisymmetric Young-Laplace equation was used to predict the angle of incidence from the fabrication of a TOF via chemical etching.

The future of RIP2/RICK/CARDIAK as a biomarker of the inflammatory response to infection.

Biological markers of disease have become increasingly important for the clinician to diagnose, predict and monitor progression, and assess the therapeutic effect of interventions on underlying pathogenic mechanisms. Robust and specific biomarkers would be very useful in inflammation, where they may facilitate early identification of tissue injury, predict disease progression and help to modify disease outcomes. However, at present, there are no robust biomarkers to predict the course of inflammation.

Macroscopic graphene membranes and their extraordinary stiffness.

The properties of suspended graphene are currently attracting enormous interest, but the small size of available samples and the difficulties in making them severely restrict the number of experimental techniques that can be used to study the optical, mechanical, electronic, thermal, and other characteristics of this one-atom-thick material. Here, we describe a new and highly reliable approach for making graphene membranes of a macroscopic size (currently up to 100 microm in diameter) and their characterization by transmission electron microscopy. In particular, we have found that long graphene beams supported by only one side do not scroll or fold, in striking contrast to the current perception of graphene as a supple thin fabric, but demonstrate sufficient stiffness to support extremely large loads, millions of times exceeding their own weight, in agreement with the presented theory.

Receptor-interacting protein-2 deficiency delays macrophage migration and increases intracellular infection during peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis.

Background: Early upregulation of receptor-interacting protein-2 (RIP2) expression during peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis correlates with a favorable clinical outcome, while failure to upregulate RIP2 correlates with a protracted course. We noticed that patients who do not upregulate RIP2 during PD-associated peritonitis have more peritoneal macrophages during the early phase of infection.

Methods: To study the mechanism behind this observation, we examined the role of RIP2 in the immune response to bacterial challenge in a mouse model of acute peritonitis.

The role of postoperative radiotherapy in carcinoma of the endometrium.

The role of adjuvant postoperative radiotherapy in endometrial carcinoma after surgery remains controversial. There is a great variation between centres in deciding when to give postoperative external beam radiotherapy and/or vaginal vault brachytherapy for patients with endometrial carcinoma. The role of pelvic and para-aortic lymphadenectomy as well as the need for postoperative radiotherapy after this type of surgical staging continue to be debated.
